Physically speaking, I’m weaker. Yes. I accept help from those who are taller and stronger, when that makes a difference, men or women. Just as I help those weaker than I.
My mom, who is 80, loves flirting. Her generation of women derived self-worth from whether or not men found them attractive, and she still focuses on surface things like fashion. She still gets all fluttery around an attractive man of any age who pays her any kind of attention. She still pushes me to get more male attention. She’s still disappointed in me because I’m a straight woman not trying to attract men.
Flirting can be a natural, chemical response. It can be culturally embedded. It can also be “benevolent sexism,” which is still sexism and still not okay.
Cenk, please don’t expound on what women want; you are not a woman. Nobody should be saying “what women want” about anything, though, because we are individuals and don’t all want the same thing. That brings to mind the story from the middle ages about Sir Gawain and the “loathly lady:” Given a year to discover the answer to the question “What do women most desire?” or be executed, Gawain can find no answer until the last minute, when a “loathly lady” makes a bargain and saves his life with the answer. What do women most want? Self-determination. So I guess there is that one thing that women all want.
And Ana, while I am happy for you, and all women, to do just that when it comes to all choices in your life, I dispute the idea that fashion, including high heels, are “feminine.” They are a free choice, but a woman who never wears anything but combat boots is STILL “feminine.”
“Benevolent sexism” is more commonly known as flirting or being friendly. It’s said to be highly enjoyable.
Borat also duped Roy ‘kiddie-fiddler’ Moore.
Benevolent sexism? This just in: Treating people well is attractive!?
I can understand women thinking nice sexists are more attractive than jerkass sexists, or even of some percentage of women wanting to be protected. Trying to group all women is misguided and sexist.
There is no such thing as “benevolent” sexism.
Just like there is no such thing as “benevolent” racism.
And no such thing as “benevolent” religious bigotry.
A better story would have been to examine the motivations of whoever is behind the coining of this false term, so-called “benevolent sexism.” Perhaps the same people who ascribe to The White Man’s Burden …?
The example Ana gave is not of “benevolent sexism” — it was a spouse defending his spouse. Just like Ana would have gone to Christian’s defense if he’d been knocked down, regardless of whether or not she would have been strong enough to make a difference, she still would have done it. That’s our instinct at work, defending our own. And of course she was turned on by her husband coming to her defense. Duh. Still does not make “benevolent sexism” a real thing.
Agreed.
From Alexandria Ocasio Cortez own explanation of how she came to run (from her own lips):
1) Alexandria’s brother submitted a candidate form to Brand New Congress
2) After reviewing all options, Brand New Congress decided Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was the best potential candidate in NY14.
3) Brand New Congress persuaded AOC to run.
4) Brand New Congress promoted her and helped start her campaign.
5) Later, other groups including Justice Democrats also jumped onboard.
Now, Cenk is claiming sole credit for her win.
Amazing.
BTW, you can learn the true history of BNC and AOC from AOC’s own lips by watching the TYT Politics interview with her, back in April.
What the hell is benevolent sexism? That’s a contradiction in terms. Whoever made up that is sexist af. Is there a study, black people are attracted to “benevolent racism”? Get the hell outta here.
Disband is a better word than abolish imo. In terms of winning the argument real world where ICE is disbanded. Abolish sounds extreme, disband sounds pleasant. You’ll never here the GOP use the word abolish in reference to any of the Gov’t agencies they want to get rid of and in the past 25 years they’ve been the only group successful at getting rid of Gov’t agencies.
Food for thought
I open doors for ANYBODY that is close-by when I get to a door. Even younger guys than me, that are in their prime, because I think it’s a kind and a civil thing to do. I confess that it is one of the few things that make me feel good or “useful to society”. It’s just something that I do when dealing with my fellow humans.
I don’t get out of my house much, I’m sort of a shut-in, but it’s kind, and takes little to no effort, and it makes me feel like a real person.
I do that too. I’m from Wisconsin and that sort of thing is fairly common around here, at least in my experience.
Cenk, put both “spy tunes” on the soundboard. It’s a MUST!
I’m a feminist and I agree that feminism is different for different people. I like strength and I like that my husband is taller and stronger than I am. That said, I told him while we were dating that if I needed help with something or someone then I’d ask him. He stuck to that and never stepped in unless I said something. Obviously, he would step in if I wasn’t able to say something or I was assaulted. I know there would be no stopping that. I also know that I’d probably do something if he was being assaulted too. :-) I might not be as strong though.
“I also know that I’d probably do something if he was being assaulted too. :-) ” Exactly!
And I’d like someone to step in if I got assaulted as well – dah!
To attach that to “because I’m a woman” or “because I’m a man” is the “ridiculous”(societal/patriarchal) part…
It would be super sexy either way.
(Influenced by what gender(s) the person being helped is into in the first place.)
Benevolent sexism sounds like a technical term for chivalry
Or male chauvinism.
That’s not science, its psychology.
But really, the topic seems too vague and ill-defined. Primate intersex relations (yes, we are apes) and the specific dynamics of our species and its cultures are far too complex to reduce to a psych quiz given to self-identified feminists and non-feminists.
Further to the point, what is the point of that “study”? What question is it trying to satisfy? More importantly, WHY are they trying to answer that question?
“WHY are they trying to answer that question?” ding ding ding :-)
“Study finds that woman are more attracted to “benevolently” sexist men”
Were do I start with this? Cenk says “science is science”, but where are the numbers? Why the generalization? If Ana likes someone is that the feeling of all women, especially if she herself says that she “get[s] a lot of sh*t from other feminists for it”? Even if women with other preferences were a tiny minority – what does that mean in that context – relationships are always established between a much smaller sample of the population than the variety within the same society?
There are a lot more issues I have with this segment, starting with the methodology of the study itself, but it’s too much. I think it’s fair to say, that the rejection of talking about toxic masculinity as well as studies and segments like this are part of the societal backlash, I’m sorry, but that’s what it looks like.
The last two post games were interesting in this context. On Monday first Cenk and then Ana, although she said it before, kind of defined their “kind people lose, the shouters will win” ideology. Then yesterday a great post game and an interesting twist – Cenk admitting that he has to stop caring what other people think of him – that’s the moments I remember why I love the guy and that he does move on and grow all the time, and that’s why I respect him. But sometimes I just can’t agree and sometimes I see societal pressure shaping a young mind in the 80s. And like most us Ana also always seems to come back to years past.
To say the left is in any and all circumstances against behavior that could be described as benevolent sexism is indeed a straw man and I don’t believe that. But do I believe that we have to still have a conversation about benevolent sexism and toxic masculinity? Yes. Do I believe that regardless of all my caveats some of the statements expressed in that segment represent the past more than the future? Yes!
Sorry, but … that’s just my opinion, man…
I continuously get the fucking Trump MAGA ad when I watch. Even my 9yr old son told me today that he saw one when he was watching. Is in not highly targeted? You think that minecraft/game videos for kids surely cant be a good demographic to target. But fuck who knows.

Also the Sasha B.C. dressing up to a vet is perfect because the right wing continues to use the military more so the veterans/active. But then they NEVER do anything for them once they get into office. The send them off to die and give huge contracts to the highly corrupt military complex. So fuck her and the rest.
On the bright side, if you are getting the ad, that’s wasted money on their part. (Not saying YOU are a waste, but that you will not be persuaded by it.)
Oh, I missed them say exactly that the first time I listened. Nevermind.
Take a look at Cheech Marin’s “Born in East L A”, Interesting.
