In regards to the Waffle House story… As an unreasonably huge guy, I’ve felt a responsibility my whole life to treat those around me with care. Normal people get to bump in to each other on the street. When I bump in to someone, there are medical bills to pay. Large people have MORE of a responsibility to de-escalate and avoid violence because of the physical power we have over others.
The church participated in the Met Gala. Church officials toured the exhibit. If other people who claim to be Christain were actually paying attention to church statements they would know this. *eyeroll*
Not to mention that the Met Gala theme is inspired by the Met’s exhibit for the year, which itself is inspired by the art of clothing and jewelry in the Catholic religion. It’s honoring the art that the church has created over time.

For Wafflehouse: We don’t have all the facts in this case and have no video of what precipitated the incident shown on the video. It did LOOK excessive, but until I know all the facts I’m not going to judge the cop in question. Race probably played a role, but seriously (and I’m white) if this was me I wouldn’t be back-talking the 200+ lb. dude who had me pinned while I knew he could start bashing my head into the pavement at any time. Should I have to “roll over” and “know my role”? No, of course not, but it would still be smart to feign it at that point (you can always sue the guy or get him arrested later – now was the WRONG time for the gay black dude to get all uppity, he’s lucky he’s not DEAD). Does anyone know if Waffle House itself has put a statement on this yet? Because again, TYT brings us this story with very little background or response – they just immediately proceed to bashing the cops and calling everyone racist, which probably doesn’t help. I’m really glad Eric Garner had the opportunity to sue the cop later… Oh wait, he didn’t because he couldn’t breathe and died. Sure, this time the guy survived, and thank god, but in that moment, there’s no way of knowing what would happen. The guy just wanted to breathe, is that really too much to ask? I don’t care what happened before the video started rolling, there’s no reason why a person who is unarmed should be choked.
Also, it would be wise to actually understand the terms you use. “whataboutism” is a distraction tactic, where you say “sure, this is bad, but what about this other thing that is worse?” hence, the term “whataboutism.” Cenk bringing up the Bundy people wasn’t trying to distract from anything, it was an illustration of the point that white people can stage an armed rebellion against the government and face virtually no consequences, meanwhile black people can be doing nothing wrong and yet will be brutalized and killed by police officers. Now of course, these outcomes are not always the case, unarmed white people do get shot by cops and black people do have fine interactions with cops, but to say there isn’t a racial component to how cops treat people is counter to the actual statistics, and the Bundy incident is a handy way of illustrating the difference.

The video of the cop choking the guy near the end, and really any video of any cop illegally attacking or killing someone, always makes me think the same thing: Why do Republicans think it is okay to carry a gun and kill someone that is attacking you or even makes you think you are in danger despite no indications you actually are in danger, but killing or even injuring a cop in self-defense isn’t okay and is just unthinkable? They could at least be consistent in advocating lethal responses. I don’t carry a gun and I feel no need to carry one, but I’m also white and a veteran ( and my vehicle plate also indicates that) so I have no need to feel threatened or in danger around c ops – although I still do slightly – but for demographics that are in danger for no good reason what do they do when the people killing them are the people carrying the badges?
I seriously doubt any reasonable person wants to push for allowing citizens to legally kill cops, so why not push for better training and more discriminating hiring practices based on past criminal history or really any derogatory information that comes up in a basic background check while also making it extremely easy to fire and black list from any and all law enforcement related jobs anyone that unjustifiably injured or killed someone 2 times or targeted specific groups like minorities or even a majority group if that is what is happening. This makes no sense. You can’t be pro-law enforcement while fighting against better training and cheering them on in situations that also increase the risk of them being killed in self-defense or people taking matters into their own hands and retaliating by ambushing cops completely unrelated to any known incident and that are just sitting in their marked vehicles for exactly this behavior which has happened numerous time over the past few years.

The entire outward facing modern identity of the country is the mixing and sharing of cultures, or it was until white supremacists felt emboldened by a president willing to champion their cause. I don’t see how people on the left can reconcile the contradictory ideas of shaming people for trying to understand, participate in, and promote a different culture while also claiming to want to be inclusive of other cultures. With all due respect, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen non-Muslim women wearing head scarves. Pretty much all over the place. Technically, wearing a head scarf isn’t culture appropriation because, why would it be appropriating a culture to want to wear fabric over your hair? Doing so was insanely popular in the early 1900’s through the 1950’s and I’m positive people were not trying to convert to Islam by wearing one or even to tout the religion itself. I’d love to wear a robe around constantly because it would be soooo comfortable, but would doing so be considered cultural appropriation? Of course not. It would just be weird. Now, if I decided to put my hair in corn rows or if I started using colloquialisms like the N* Word, that would be cultural appropriation. If I wore a sombrero around and told everyone to call me “Jefe”, that would be cultural appropriation. Also racist. It’s not that hard to see what is and what isn’t cultural appropriation.
