Thank you Wynsong for the lyrics to Strange Fruit. It is a song I’d heard only the name of before this broadcast, and I had no idea Billie Holiday sang it. She sang it in a very chilling, deeply fearful way, as if the ghosts of so many victims were possessing her as she sang.
I challenge Kanye West to sing this song.
I know Eminem, Ro Khanna and so many others from so many walks of life would have no trouble singing this song, save for the great sadness it would bring to their justice and inclusivity-filled hearts.
This broadcast by Dan Rather brought tears to my eyes. I wish my late mom and dad could’ve known that Walter Cronkite’s successor was this understanding and empathetic.
But to be honest I’m glad they left this world before 2016, because that election would have killed them faster than you could say Bull Connor.
Bless you Mr. Rather! Keep up the good work! You (and the TYT gang) give me hope!
Thank you Mr. Rather for ending your program with that sorrowful, haunting song. It was hard to listen to, and I hope it will remind us we still have a long way to go to overcome the bitter racial hatred that once prevailed in this country.
This is show is a great addition to TYT. Thanks, Cenk. And thank you so much Dan. Keep it up!
Here are the lyrics to Strange Fruit:
Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
