TYT Hour 1 April 23, 2018

In The Young Turks Hour 1 - On Demand by Zoe J57 Comments

Cenk reports on Donald Trump’s tweet rampage this weekend. Trump is not as rich as he claims to be. Paul Ryan on the added trillion dollar deficits, saying they were going to happen anyway. Terrorist attack in Toronto this morning, police do an outstanding job of apprehending the suspect. Waffle House shooter was mentally unbalanced, and affiliated with a white wing group of sovereign-citizen extremists. Democrats decided to go with brand new messaging for the 2018 election. Sen. Kamala D. Harris announces she will no longer be taking corporate PAC money. Natalie Portman decided not to travel to Israel to accept an award in protest.

  1. I HOPE Harris is just making a political calculation rather than acting out of a moral conviction. It means the movement is winning. When smart politicians jump in front of a movement, it means the movement has reached critical mass.

  2. IT seems to me that Paul Ryan worsen his position rather than excusing it. If we believe [his obviously fallacious] argument then he knew the deficit would rise but actively chose to reduce the tax take. Not only did he knowingly increase the deficit by reducing the tax take [against his most firmly held beliefs] but did so at a time when he ‘knew’ the expenditure would rise. Surely this is worse not better than just being a hypocrite.

  3. I will celebrate the Harris thing in that it’s a good step in the right direction

I think what was missing from this is that this is her clearly getting ready for 2020. She is going to be the establishment supported canadiate I am now 99% sure. She is doing this to make it harder for progressives to attack her

  4. So tired of hearing about trumps incompetence. Should cover policy and local elections more during the main show. Focus on events that progressives are more concerned about, and events that they are more concerned about. They spend too much time, like the mainstream media, focusing on trump’s BS

  5. CRAZZYYY!!! I know cops doing their jobs, actually arresting and interrogating suspects and terrorist rather and just straight up shooting… US cops are a bunch of pussies. Do you job, arrest dont spray and pray.

  6. Cenk’s ranting makes me consider canceling my membership. It’s gotten to the point where I’m embarrassed to watch his solo hours with my girlfriend in the room bc he reminds me too much of when I’d be subjected to Rush Limbaugh as a kid when my parents would listen…

      1. Sorry I’d prefer thoughtful commentary on important news and not 23 minutes of ranting and name-calling all about Trump…

    1. I know. He totally blew off Trump’s DNC server counterpoint. Trump may be a dumb ass, but if this dumb ass is countering Russia Gate bull shit, then that’s bad. Jimmy Dore covered it better. And I’ve been a TYT member for years upon years…

  7. Thank you for highlighting what the Canadian cops did with this guy vs what American cops would have done. I had not seen that video. It was hard to tell what was going on, but you could see clearly the cop held his ground and got the bastard…. without shooting him!

I think US cops used to be more like that. I can’t say for sure as I am not on the force, but it seems the training has changed in the last ten years or so. I don’t remember so many US cops just popping people off before they fully understood who and what they were dealing with.

P.S. Please look into the FOSTA and SESTA bills… they have stopped a segment of free speech on the internet in their tracks. This is a slippery, slippery slope….

  8. I know how we can solve the $1.9 trillion deficit that the Republicans added. Tax all the people that voted for it at 1000% and every rich donor and corporation that bribes them at 10000% as a punitive measure. Then we can see if they ever do something that stupid and corrupt again. And if it bankrupts them, who gives a shit? They don’t appear to care about bankrupting the government or average people. Oh, and jail them all for life because they’re crooks.

  9. The Toronto video shows several pedestrians walking from behind the van and then casually walking around the corner, apparently oblivious to the policeman pointing the gun at the van driver and also apparently oblivious to the van assault that had just ended. Don’t know the sequence of events, but am amazed the pedestrians were so unaware. They didn’t even walk fast. Were they deaf? The police car had it siren on and the officer was yelling. The video often doesn’t show the pedestrians, but when they are shown their feet and lower bodies don’t indicate they turned to look at the scene.

Apparently there was only the one officer, so there was no-one to block off access. It is unclear how the van was stopped. The front is smashed but the police car on the curb would have nothing to do with stopping van.

A second question relates to a group called 21st Century Democrats who have called me several times for a donation, claiming to be progressives. Does anyone have information about them relative to whether they are true progressives and their donors.

    1. Just now watched http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43883052, which has a much better video. On that video, the three pedestrians probably came out of the building door just to the right of the end of the van. The editing cuts of that part, but the revolving door is still turning. When the pedestrians appear, they do partially turn to see what is happening, but keep walking away at a moderate pace. They were not scared enough to run. If I were that close to an armed confrontation, I would walk considerably faster to get further away.

The BBC report says the police blocked the van, so apparently another police car off camera blocked the sidewalk further down and the van driver stopped rather than trying to ram his way through. The arresting officer then dealt with the van driver as shown on the TYT video. Other police were nearby, at least one from the car blocking the van, but probably more. They would have provided backup, but apparently felt the arresting officer was capable of handling it. They probably had their own guns trained on the driver off-camera when the arresting officer put his gun away and pulled his baton. That is speculation, but likely. The arresting officer would have known they were present. That is not to lessen the bravery of the arresting officer, just put it in context. Otherwise his behavior would appear foolhardy if he were truly alone.

A big advantage of not killing the van driver is the opportunity to question him and get additional information about the cause and possible accomplises. It also models how cooperating cops can support each other in performing a bloodless arrest while limiting risk to themselves. It is still amazing that the cop did not shoot when the driver used aggressive bluffs about having a gun. The driver likely wanted to be killed by the police as part of his suicide/play for fame or martyrdom.

  10. That is what a “good cop” looks like. First and foremost try to find a peaceful way to do his job. Maybe we should send US cops to Canada to get properly trained?

  11. Cenk,

I laughed so fuckng hard during hour 1 that I started crying, what a fabulous show.
    Thanks for the outstanding show.
    gpmcfm

  12. Cenk’s sideways mouth when he impersonates President Mulligan giving his wealth in 2016 as, “10 billion,” is hilarious. This segment was so good, I re-watched it this morning.

  13. You all realize the Donald J. Trump is legally the President of the United States… I wish it were not so; but it is… To limit his B.S. to ten minutes max; is ignoring the harm that he (and his minions) are doing to the body politic… In the real world, for example, Scott Pruitt would be facing criminal charges… If you don’t wish to hear about Donny and the Trumpanzees, there are other places to go for your news…

  14. Cenk is being way too generous to Kamala Harris who is nothing but a banking and corporate shill. For example, see Jimmy Dore:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWBWvfpXDK0

I give her no credit whatsoever, since dark money will just make up the difference. She must denounce the dark money, publicly, as well. Same for Booker et al.

  15. Paul Ryan’s swallow at Chuck Todd’s question is telling.
I’m amazed that in Toronto the police are still there to serve and protect everyone, even criminals.

  16. It is good that Kamala and other Corporate Dems are being “brave” and stating that they won’t take PAC money. Good. Good for them.

BUT that doesn’t mean I will vote for them. Call me a purists, but I will still seek out JDs or the like who have never taken PAC/Big Donor money to begin with. Just because DNC-Clintoncrats SAY they won’t take PAC money doesn’t mean they still won’t vote or support legislation that is pro-Big Donor.

They have proven untrustworthy. They are still millionaires who hang with other millionaires & billionaires and still want the same things. They don’t give a shit about Unions, or ending Wars, or Education, or universal healthcare, or ending Private Prisons…the list goes on & on.

You can put lipstick & pearls on a pig … but it’s still a pig.

    1. Totally 100% agree — I remember feeling robbed after I voted for Kamala and then when she got to Washington her first newsworthy deed was to travel up to the Hamptons and kiss the Clinton’s rings. Done with Kamala.

That said… we really have won the message war. While that’s far short of winning the total war, it does count.

According to Politico, Bernie has already won this year — the Revolutionary momentum is that overwhelming.

      Fingers crossed!

      1. You are absolutely 100% right. These people don’t deserve your vote. BUT that is not the point of the story. This is GREAT news because it shows how much progressives (and Justice Democrats) are having a real effect on mainstream Democrats, even if it is at a glacial pace. Bernie’s campaign was a win, even if he didn’t. Cenk has said over and over that one ultimately has to judge politicians by their actions, not their words or what’s “in their heart”. I wouldn’t trust Kamala Harris as far as I could throw her. But if she follows through on this promise then I will give her credit for it. People like that need to be encouraged to do the right things. There is no “perfect” in politics. Anything that is accomplished needs to be done by coalition, however temporary it may be. If progressives and right-wingers can come together to help end foreign intervention, fantastic. And if progressives can hold a gun to the head of a corporate Democrat to force them into the right kind of action, also fantastic. Because it shifts the Overton window and makes progressive ideas mainstream, thus making it more likely for true progressives to get nominated and elected.

    2. Totally agree. Now that it serves their interests they are willing to do this, which has a level of good to it. However, once you get a taste of that sweet, sweet donor money you have already sold your soul.

Nothing wrong with being a purist. Settling and compromise are parts of the reason that politics in this country is completely corrupted. The people that rail against being a purist are the same one’s that pitch “taking the high road” and “incrementalism”. That works to fill those politicians pockets, but totally screws the rest of us

    1. You aren’t the only one. Saw it yesterday morning and was surprised I had not heard about it yet on any of the news I watch. [Basically online progressive news peoples on youtube, TYT, and sometime the nightly news on broadcast channels. No cable, but they often have the time to cover things throughout 24 hrs, so maybe it was on there and I just don’t know it.]

      1. Yeah I “cut the cord” a long time ago, but yes as others have said Sam Seder did cover this on Majority Report but still I was surprised it wasn’t mentioned much by TYT.

This will sound odd to many folks here since it’s coming from me, but maybe we need a show each week (at least for the Trump presidency duration) on TYT hosted by the great people of color; even just one hour a week. Jayar could obviously be on it (if he has time as he is also Sr. Producer already), and great old guests like Amberia but new faces as well, and the show could “black-splain” to the REALLY racially stupid people like myself various topics that are in the news and WHY they are racist or not. Also, what do THEY feel when they see stuff like the Nazi crap in GA and how does it hold them back or maybe empower them to do more. We’re getting really divided in this country and I myself could do with a progressive hour a week dedicated to these topics. Plus, it would also mean that some of the “more minor” things could be covered in the new show which would leave more room in the main show (where most racial topics get put in the second “hour” which is often crunched for time and don’t get covered well enough). I don’t mean segregate the shows BTW, I’m just brainstorming here.

What say the rest of you? Or is there already an excellent web/radio/MSM show covering these topics that someone can make me aware of in the replies? And thank you all for your putting up with my nutcase/idiot/sometimes prejudiced views!

  17. Canadian authorities have not called this a terrorist attack; why is TYT doing it? Seems to me that this channel is not too different from mainstream media in trying to sensationalize events to get views!

  18. You guys… the Shadey thing. There’s someone in his address book called Shadey something or another. Duh.

  19. Cenk– I’ve been thinking about this for awhile–inspired to write by your Ryan rant.

We moan about corruption because big spenders now dominate elections. But how can we do something more to really effectively fight against that? Candidates do need money to spread their message. Cenk, here’s what I think you could do: –or if you are already too busy find someone who can. Start a Big Donor political Fund –or funds, funded only by ONLY us ordinary citizens. So that many small donors could become a big donor clearly pushing in the same direction for the values we care about. Here’s how it would work: A goal of $1 million –or $10 million– would be established for a fund–someone such as you would establish beforehand the guidelines for how it would be spent– for candidates most in need who could be ONLY viable candidates who DO NOT take corporate or big money from rich individuals. Individual donors would be limited to some amount up to a maximum of, say $1000 each–. Or it could be some lower fixed maximum. None of it would be spent until the goal has been reached to encourage people to contribute to meet the goal. The total as it accumulates would be well publicized to motivate contributors.

Only when the goal is met would it be spent– How it would be spent would of course be openly published for people to see. If people agreed and liked these choices other subsequent additional similar funds could be established– Allowing that not everyone has exactly the same opinion on who should get money, slightly different funds could be established for people having somewhat different views–but always only for candidates who do not accept corporate of large individual contributions. I think this would give ordinary citizens such as myself a feeling that we have a lot more power to change. And if it caught on it could persuade more candidates to see how they don’t need the big money from rich individual and corporate bribes..

We could be big donors too for a more public agenda. I would personally be an enthusiastic contributor if I could trust the person running the find to make good choices.

  20. I think Portman not supporting BDS makes her prize protest a bit hollow. This is another case in this very show of another “wrong answer”.

  21. As soon as Cenk started on Trump I tuned out and looked at something else. After about 10 minutes or so I guessed that Cenk would have completed his rant about Trump. Only to find there were a further 10 minutes to go.

I think it was a total of about 23 minutes.

All to say that Trump had lied about his wealth.

In my view this was NOT an effective use of programme time. Surely there were other more worthwhile stories.

    Any ayes out there.

    1. Aye.
Use the time to discuss world news, the newest info with net neutrality and it’s demise/possibilities in some states, what is going on in Palestine and that they filed the complaint against Israel regarding the anti-racism treaty they have, etc.
The Trump stories could still have been reported fully with just a few minutes, maybe 10 max for it all. I would prefer more rounded news than just talking about Trump half the time. I get he is a major news thing and will be on the news daily- and sometimes he really should be discussed in depth on certain policies or the like- but 20 mins for some tweets and that he lied about his wealth….

      1. I wish they had like… a half hour show about all the stupid trump stuff that happened during the day that was separate to the main show, then we could go back to having a first and second hour that had news and current affairs with in-depth analysis.

I get that none of this is normal but I’m kinda sick of being yelled at about it. We know. We know he’s a liar and a cheat and a con man and an all round fuckwit, but the world keeps turning and other stuff keep happening. 20 minutes spent on yelling about world news would be amazing, honestly.

        1. Arguably Mondays are worse because there have been two days of madness to cover instead of a single day, and the madness is usually more severe. That said, I’m not trying to argue against the experiences of the above posters.

          1. I get that point 100%. The truth is over the weekends he likes to have his bigger twitter meltdowns lately too. That said, when he isn’t hosting alone I feel the stories are more balanced in the length of the report. On some Monday in the past couple months when he had a co-host [usually John], the time spent on stories was much more balanced and more news was reported on.

So maybe a balance would be having John or Anna [or a special guest, or another co-host, etc] co-hosting with him on the first hour. That said I always happen to prefer when there are 2 hosts- often gives a fun balance of different views or thoughts. I know Ana has mentioned on the 2nd hour or post game before about wishing she was included on the 1st hour more often. Give her- and her fans!- her wish! :)

    2. I’m not a total aye on this.

I get your point–and have some degree of sympathy for your view. But I did NOT tune out.

I confess I want to have some knowledge about these aspects of Trump if they are accurate. A lot of what Cenk said was new to me–maybe not to you. But I do want to know what is factually known about this beast who is making our national political system even worse than it was.

But only if it is balanced by even MORE talk on how we can make our presently pathetic national political system work better.

      1. “…But I do want to know what is factually known about this beast who is making our national political system even worse than it was.

But only if it is balanced by even MORE talk on how we can make our presently pathetic national political system work better.”

This is a great point. I like your ending point and think it would help counter balance the time spent on Trump stories

    3. Aye. Cenk has an unhealthy fixation on Trump. The time has come for an intervention. Michael, Ben, Jayar, Jimmy, are you guys listening?

  22. Cop in Toronto showed true bravery and self-control. Also, didn’t need 50 backup officers to apprehend the suspect. Great job.

  23. “I will not condone a course of action that will lead us to war. ” – Natalie is the Senator of the Naboo.
holy shit did I just quote “the phantom menace?” strange times indeed.

Also, Go Kamala, I’m also skeptical, and it seems a little bandwagon, but her evolution might inspire other up and comers to never consider PAC money.

  24. Again the podcast feed for today has the broadcast from Friday. This has happened multiple times over the past few weeks and appear to be more of a frequent occurrence. Is it possible for someone there at TYT to look into this? You guys do a great job presenting information, I personally prefer the podcast feed for my long commute. But I’ve been frustrated to keep finding the old broadcast on what should be the most recent one available.

  25. This happened a block away from me and I was walking along that same sidewalk this morning. While it’s deeply troubling this is happening outside my door, as a Torontonian I’m proud of the response of first responders and police.

  26. I loved the Toronto cop’s reaction when the guy said he had a gun, “I don’t care”. That’s being cool under pressure. I am sure a lot of people would say he should have been shot but I’d rather find out why he did what he did. Knowledge is power, especially when future attaches will happen.
