Cenk, Ana. Mark Zuckerberg testifies before congress. Facebook hearing proves that senators don’t know how Facebook works. Ex-House Speaker John Boehner to join cannabis firm advisory board.
Just watched Emma Vigeland’s TYT Politics video on Zuckerberg hearing, excellent perspective https://youtu.be/on57BnC7ZgQ on the hypocrisy of politicians grilling FB about privacy concerns when they just expanded the NSA powers to invade it. And the $$$ trail behind most of those softball questions, pure theater for media. It’s ironic how this is a problem all of sudden but revered in 2012 https://youtu.be/fDMLtkqDEeI?t=11m31s
That last question around the 17:30 Mark Z wasn’t even dumb. He asked if the ads being shown rely on any messages that were sent using what’s app. And the Zucc just said Facebook doesn’t see what’s sent in what’s app, and what’s app messages are encrypted.
Also, most of these politicians don’t know anything about ANYTHING. That’s why lobbyists and shit come around. But they usually just give them the info they want the politicians to know. Just like what Mark was doing there.
Boehner changed his mind on pot because after he stepped down as speaker, he needed to chill out big time. Could you imagine what a shitty, stressful job being Rep. Speaker of the House is? He needed to smoke a lot of weed to get back to a relatively healthy state.
This is how technology destroys the Price System. The moment we get privacy and open source code dominating the majority of functions in our society will the Price System fall apart. Politicians, Bankers, Lawyers, Financial elite are completely fucking useless. Their only job is to keep the status quo’s grip on our society and culture intact. Get government to install and protect the infrastructure of open source code and hardware.
You want to use ‘closed source’ corporate software? Have no clue where your data is being used for/at? Then do it at your OWN RISK and with your OWN choice.
Haha!!! Why not organize a group of senators that are somewhat more knowledgeable on the topic and person in question. I thnk it wouldn’t be the end of the world to actually sit down and organize this group and review what the case may entail.. Wow! JUST LIKE ANY OTHER JOB!! my gosh embarrassed at these senators for not doing pre work or keeping there mouth shut.
Have to say – I 100% am with Ana on not giving the MOC a pass on them not knowing. They have entire staffs of people to help them with this shit! They don’t have to be experts on every subject but it’s crazy how little they understood – especially given that they probably did have extensive help from their staffs!
And seriously Senator Schatz? You don’t know what ‘encrypted’ means?!??! Bitch, please. You work for the government. People use WhatsApp because of the damn NSA. Crazy mofo.
I don’t understand the opt-in/opt-out controversy. I don’t use Facebook (age 28), but if it’s as easy as “opting out” of your data being used by the company, isn’t it the users’ fault for not knowing or caring about it? You could appeal to Facebook to inform people better, even legislate on how data can be used, sure, but why force them to turn it into an opt-in system if it’s gonna cost them billions?
I think part of the whole problem with the entire conversation geared around fb is that it has changed a lot and continues to change. They CONSTANTLY tweak it and mess around with it and it has gone through several versions over the years as it is as they have fine tuned how it works and how the privacy settings have worked and they’ve changed it multiple times. And they generally do inform users. Honestly this isn’t a new conversation – about their privacy settings. There is a lot that you can mess around with and control yourself. I don’t know – I’ve used fb for something like 9 years or something and I’m not that freaked out or worried by it. I feel like the people who are overly freaked out about it are the same people who are too disinterested to even bother looking at their settings and taking control of how they are using fb in the first place. Eh, my 2 cents.
if you don’t give your information away, your friends are doing it for you. That’s the problem. 100 people with 100 friends will give information of 10,000 people to who knows who company,
next time you are trying to write a comment on a new website, read carefully what the website is going to do with your data. It says “we will get your email address” (no problem there if you don’t mind) but sometimes it says that and “we will read your friends list”. I personally don’t agree and won’t post my comment on that website.
There are at least 3 major problems:
1. Non-users have their web-surfing information collected by facebook cookies. There is no way for non-users to opt out. These were also called ‘phantom profiles’. This is made possible by web developers including facebook share widgets into their pages.
2. People who have opted out of sharing information have still had their information harvested against their explicit wishes (Eg Cambridge Analytica, other e-mail profile harvesters).
3. There is no one button that says “stop all info sharing”. These settings are hard to understand for non-techies. It’s a process that could take hours depending on how many apps you use.
Ultimately, it’s about informing consumers and getting consent. Facebook doesn’t (or at least didn’t) tell you how your information was going to be used. Once info is in there, they just hide it from your view if you ‘delete’ it. Most people never consented to sharing, but it got slipped into the terms of service later on. I agree most people just agree to terms of all apps without reading what’s going on. Short term benefit now, long term consequences later.
Nothin’ but love, Cenk and Ana, so I don’t wanna be nitpicky. That said, do you suppose we could have a Cenk and Ana hour next week that’s actually a Cenk and Ana HOUR?
As probably the only person in the world that does not have a Facebook account. I kind of enjoyed Zuckerberg’s smart ass responses. But it goes to Ana’s point that these representatives are not well informed on very important matters, nor do they even attempt to become informed. I’m a Kinesiology major at UMD and follow politics as a hobby and I guarantee I know more nuance on a majority of issues than probably 30% of this Congress .
You probably underestimate your knowledge compared to congress critters. I’ll bet you are better informed than 70% of those clowns. You know the real problems. They know money.
It can certainly feel like you’re the only one. I don’t have one either, I made one many years ago when I went to college but didn’t do much with it. The disturbing thing is even though I deactivated/closed it it’s still there, just found this out after my aunt was “upset” that I hadn’t friended her back. And I don’t have access to the email I used when I set it up so I can’t try and remove it for real.

Zuckerberg’s interview is why Net Neutality is dead. They are too old to understand.
Preach it!

I see. How does that work? Do they spread my data when they share my posts?
