Made Brett smile with my Betsy Devos tweet. I don’t care that Cenk read it…Brett smiled so my day is made. :)
It’s a little sick when you can use the words “several massacres ago” in a totally normal context. It’s true that evil wins when good does nothing, and at last good people are doing something! Hope Gibson is unseated.
It would be nice if some young people (teens) could co-host The Young Turks every once in a while. Maybe on a friday power panel.
They used to sometimes have the millennial dumpster fire on Friday Post Games, but they haven’t done that in months.
Aside from the fact that I am sick of your “don’t assume” argument everytime a case like this comes up (you guys make some pretty massive assumptions) how are women and non-white actors supposed to get paid more if we don’t step up in cases like this? It’s wrong that the lead of the show is getting paid less (regardless of what lead to it) the only way the system changes is for us to point that out and fix it. Yet pointing that out and fixing it is wrong because it means we are making assumptions.
So we aren’t supposed to assume anyone is going to get paid less because of a broken system, and because we aren’t supposed to assume we aren’t supposed to do anything about fixing it?
Awesome…
Maybe the reason she got paid less was Matt Smith being The Doctor but Foy is the lead (the show is about her character) and has now proven herself so moving forward there is no reason for her to make less. If people don’t point out these things as they are happening and fight to right them in the moment then nothing will ever change.
Brain-Dead Betsy is not hiding anger with her vacant smile.
There is genuinely nothing going on there behind those glassy eye baubles.
She is a huge religious school fanatic, pushing creationism, etc.
You can ask her a million questions, and it doesn’t matter. No anger, she has the convictions of her religion and she KNOWS everyone else is wrong, no matter what they say. If they contradict or berate her, she’s a MARTYR.
She’s getting uncomfortable questions & put-downs for JESUS!
Too her, it is just like when the Christians were thrown to the lions.
^^This^^ People love to become martyrs for their cause. I grew up Mormon and I was taught that when the world goes against your religion it means that the devil is acting through others to take you down. This belief is extremely toxic and explains why people double down when confronted with opposition.
Ana is gone and so is Jayar, thus I suspect that Ana & Jayar were out kickin’ it all night AGAIN! Cenk you really need to reprimand those two at this point :-P
Which of those was Leslie Stall and which of those was Betsy DeVos? They keep cutting between two people but I can’t tell the difference.
Matt Smith was a VERY popular Doctor Who for around 4 years (3 seasons with a couple breaks in there), and coming out of that role he is a VERY in-demand actor. Before “The Crown” took off, I’ll be honest with you, I watched that show for the first time because Matt Smith was in it. I didn’t know who Claire Foy was and I bet a lot of other people didn’t either. He brought me to the show. Known, leading actors and actresses draw people to a show. Let alone a “risky” show that’s being released direct to a streaming service. Claire Foy gave AMAZING performances and I agree it’s her break-out role, but so did a lot of other people in the show, such as John Lithgow in Season One, and in Season Two I’d argue the actress who played Margaret stole the show somewhat, at least for me. But back to Smith, even before Doctor Who, he had a very successful career and resume, so you can’t just say everyone gets the same. I want equality but I don’t want to see some kind of gestapo going through Hollywood offering rewards to those who turn in actors who make more money than co-stars. At this point I think Claire Foy has earned a raise, but giving Smith more initially was perfectly fair.
Those kids don’t know anything! They aren’t old enough to buy a beer or be a legislator! They are old enough, however, to get assault rifles! UGH make up your mind you dried up Repblican bitch! Those Florida kids kick ass!
THANK YOU. Look, Claire Foy has been amazing in this, but she was not in Matt Smith’s league in terms of resume or name recognition or fan base or draw. I would hope she has renegotiated and/or gotten a very well deserved raise, but it’s not scandalous when an objectively bigger star gets more money for a project. This would be scandalous if Elizabeth were played by, say, Billie Piper and Matt Smith received more money. We should ask for equality, but there are limits. In the corporate world, someone with a higher degree or years of experience frequently makes more than someone who only holds a BA/BS or is fresh out of college. Are we to say it’s unfair when someone makes more if they are bringing a measurably higher amount to the table? When it’s apples to apples, it needs to be equal. When it’s apples to oranges, straight equality is not the issue, but measurable and objective justification is the concern. In this case, it is entirely justified at the outset of a brand new project with unknown revenue potential or critical acclaim.
PLEASE DO THE STAND UP STAND OFF!!! ?
Nothing on Stephen Hawkins death?
Bret mentioned it
Just a mention about math scores for english speakers: In many languages numbers are spoken like this; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, ten and one, ten and two, ten and three . . . etc. Those people who have a language of numbers like that automatically know how to add ten and 3 plus two ten and five. It’s incorporated in the language.
English speakers have to first define wtf eleven, twelve, or twenty means before ciphering the actual calculations. What should be done, at least in math, is to redefine our language for math. Sure, we can keep the quaint words for higher numbers for conversation, but when doing math, as well as teaching it, we should use the automatic wording for numbers.
Thank you to Malcolm Gladwell in his book “Outliers – The Story of Success” for pointing this out to me. Read it!
That’s a very interesting point I hadn’t considered. I think those areas that have moved to adopt common core math principles (whether or not they are called common core) and are utilizing the new teaching methods wherein the focus is on number sense and teaching a variety of means to reach the answer are making a huge impact. My daughter is naturally inclined to numbers and patterns (versus words/reading) but she’s already over a grade level up in math because they teach number sense and methods rather than rote memorization and she can apply those to concepts they haven’t officially taught yet. It makes me wonder if some of that isn’t linked to her school’s magnet program – she’s in a language magnet. In kinder, they take French, Spanish and Chinese and then select one that they concentrate on the remainder of elementary (though the entire school continues world cultures learning). The exposure and repetition to learning numbers in three other languages in kinder, as they are focusing on counting to 100 (or 1000) and learning tens and units and creating number lines and number sentences probably really helps that click unconsciously.
CENK!!!! Please try to stop calling the Seychelles the “Seashells”. It really is too silly a mistake for a person of your intellectual stature generally and your expertise as a journalist in particular.
(I know I haven’t sounded like an especially good fan today — with this and my prior correction during Hour One — but the truth is that I am an INVETERATE fan of ALL of yours, both when I am here and when I am in Amsterdam — nor is this likely to change much, as I am now 75 years of age.)
Amen to that! I yell at my computer every time he says that.
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, however, I don’t think they really read too many of these comments.
That drives me bonkers.
Dear “easjer” — Thank you for responding, but, as I have said to “BlueFemaleTexan” just above, I really don’t think anyone on the reporting team is reading many of the comments left by members on the site. I wish it were otherwise. Oh, well. “Seashells” it shall remain then. (Ugh!) I googled the origin of “Seychelles”, incidentally, just out of curiosity, and it turns out it was the surname of some minister at the court of Louis XV — having no connection whatsoever either with the sea or with mollusk shells! (It really IS too silly.)

@David – mine worked.
Jay, I got it later. Maybe they were in the process of setting it up.
Worded for me as well. Might have just tried a little to early.
