Hey Gigi:
RE election coverage: if you could just put up a members communication that you hear us and it’s coming that would be helpful (bonus points if you let us know what heading it will be posted under ;)
Have you been able to find it?
Yes, where is the election coverage?! Interested in seeing the Beto O’Rourke interview. Someone…please respond!
Where’s the election coverage??
cant find the election coverage posted anywhere? :(
Curious? Does nobody think there is some kind of possible dependency issue with the mayor and her security officer? She pays his bills, she schedules his time? Again, I’m just curious, I kind of expect that this issue comes up these days, whether the parties involved are claiming consent or not – and it’s usually Ana who brings it up..?
Holy crap, that’s a great point! If it had been a male Mayor and a female officer, just curious how different the story would have been.
You guys are becoming establishment as hell. First you won’t drop the Russia garbage, now you’re huge fans of John Oliver.
I haven’t been able to watch that guy since he punched down at Jill Stein when she wanted to use the same accounting trick used to bail out the huge banks to bail out students being desperately harmed by terrible student loan debt.
Thank god Jimmy Dore is still on this channel.
Both Cenk and Ana have at numerous times said how much they love John Oliver over the last couple of years, so I don’t know why you think this is all of a sudden.
Also, 99% of John Oliver’s stories are SUPER PROGRESSIVE! Just because he was a Clinton supporter, all of a sudden he’s an establishment hack and his messages are garbage? This kind of attitude is disgusting. The only segment John Oliver did that I really really got mad at was he did a hit piece on his show of Jill Stein. But that was one small bit. I’ve watched every episode of his show since it first aired, and he’s soooo far away from establishment.
Hasidic Jews wear a certain type of clothing, which is why she knew he was a Hasidic Jew. It had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he was a Hasidic Jew. If she had said he was wearing all black, with curls down the side of his head, and a big black hat, would that have made it better?
No one has an issue with her identifying him as a Hasidic Jew when trying to get find him. What people had a problem with is the step further and basically said that because that part of town has a large Hasidic population women are likely to be harassed if they are there.
I have no idea why I wrong “get find” sorry for that typo/grammar blip
Exactly correct, thank you Ms.LauraPalmer
It was a TWEET — by definition limited characters. She was warning everyone that there is a dangerous guy driving a grey van to look out for. Everyone knows that wearing all black, curls down side of head, big black hat = Hasidic, and she saved character space by cutting to the chase.
Cenk was wrong to suggest that she was even mentioning fundamentalism, let alone “calling it out.” No, that is not what she was doing. She was accurately describing a suspect.
Sorry that was a reply to evilkitty51 –
Also, remember the movie The Running Man? Never thought that would become
reality – and it takes place in 2019- i think it was out in 1987 – it was outrageous
Sci Fi
So just curious how many wrecks do we think will happen because people will see a car without a driver and freak out? I am about 50% certain the first time I ever see one of these I will have at least a minor freak out. I am still all for them don’t get me wrong but I know myself…
I agree with the core of what you guys are getting at but here’s the thing Amber and you two have NO idea that the guy did this because “she wasn’t covered up” or whatever else. You guys are assuming without any evidence that this incident happened because he is a Hasidic Jew. You want to have a frank conversation about some of the problems with those belief systems great I am on board and you are right we should be able to have this conversation. That doesn’t really apply here. Something awful and scary happened to her it was done by a Hasidic man and you guys are saying that a and b are related… sorry I can’t get on board
Thanks! yes exactly –
Yes, all the tweet said was that he was an aggressive and potentially dangerous driver. Period.
Cenk read his own perspective into it, and went off on a long tirade that had nothing to do with the actual situation.
On Nashville: The mayor and her fornicating bodyguard could have just had their affair and “gotten off” most of these charges, but she had to go and Jordan Chariton the thing and embezzle money effectively and that’s what just ruined their careers. That was stupid, especially in a red state as a democrat and a woman.
I missed that Bachelor episode so I therefore demand a TYT re-creation of the scenes involved so I can get excited, too! Please! ;-)
….The writer ‘s strike -was the spark that caused this dumpster fire.
Reality tv far out doubts the writers strike sadly. I would be curious if it made it worse (since tv went to crap during it) but reality tv was going strong before
Oops I try again …. Last Oct Amber Tamblyn tweeted about sexual
predators Weinstein ,Donald and Bernie ? She’s been anti Bernie for a long
time – and paranoid as it seems – a tweet like this stokes the fire against Jewish
people in general ( ie check out some of the tweets) and Bernie. I don’t consider her an honest actor.
She does lump Bernie in with a lot of people she shouldn’t I agree. I don’t know if she is an honest actor or not because I simply don’t follow her on social media (her social media is a mess). I do think that this conversation is crazy though…
Amber Tamblyn? Remember last Oct when she tweeted about the dangerous
sexual preditors? Weinstein ,
You can’t bill the taxpayers for your private shit. It was right for her to resign, and she should pay the money back. You said she’s a progressive? I don’t care. Her use of taxpayer money hurt the public trust. End of discussion.
The only issue with the Bachelor story is, Was the woman forced to do anything beyond the contract she signed or the things that she agreed to? Other than that, if people are stupid enough to watch this crap, that’s their problem. Sure it shows the lowest depths of the human condition, but isn’t that a positive thing, like a wake up call?
Yeah! Shout out by Cenk for John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight. Awesome. I usually wait to watch Friday’s Power Panel until Sunday so I can watch John Oliver and then TYT.
It doesn’t matter but I still feel like pointing out Amber Tamblyn’s husband, David Cross, is/was Jewish. He’s an out and proud atheist but I imagine they still have family who identify as Jewish.
I don’t believe she’s anti-Jewish I think that’s going too far. I do think the statements were problematic and that TYT brushing it under the rug is kind of crazy. I think if you applied the same logic to almost any other group “hey women get mistreated in x part of town often don’t go there” that they would be more outraged but since it’s religion Cenk is more willing to be okay with it. I like Cenk but it is a problem with him sometimes.
I also think because they (TYT people) are often unfairly accused of things they are more willing to jump to someone’s defense and for the most part I agree with that. Again, this statement was a problem and they are quick to deny it. The man did something extremely wrong, he was Jewish, connecting the two without knowing they are related is not ok.
I agree. How is “ because that part of town has a large Hasidic population women are likely to be harassed if they are there” not problematic. A lot of people/women are saying exactly that by the way in Europe right now about Muslims, oh excuse me “parts of towns having a large Muslim population”. I wonder how Cenk feels about that…
Cenk you’re absolutely correct about shows like The Batchelor. Thank you for standing up to what you correctly identify as emotional porn. And Ana, you’re absolutely correct about the Drama of Trumps Whitehouse. Trump is a huckster who ,sadly, can command air-time.
Sadly people watch because some people lead lives that have little intimacy or security, and such TV pacifies people who feel like that. Wanting to see people who have “everything “ cry their eyes out isnt very edifying.
Blaming the conspiracy theorists actions on mental illness really does a disservice to the majority of people who live with mental illness. Can’t we at least blame willfully ignorant people who have a selective capacity for empathy sometimes? The DSM-5 has no category for those people. So- I guess you can’t officially call that a mental illness. But- in most cases, those are the people responsible for this type of activity. Ana often mentions the importance of media literacy. I agree. I know a lot of successful, “normal” individuals who believe things easily debunked. But- the bubble they choose to live in dismisses anything that might threaten the bubble’s integrity. It happens on the left and the right. I’m not saying it’s equal. I listen to talk radio in this country. But- I want to acknowledge it isn’t something exclusive to conservatives. As far I know, there aren’t any willful mental illnesses. But- there is plenty of willful ignorance. We should spend a little more time blaming that second category. Their numbers are larger, and their impact is much greater.
I think it’s the problem with connecting “crazy” to mental illness. Some people are nuts. They will believe anything, take blind action, going off the rails, and you see them and you think “damn they are crazy”. Some people have actual medical problems. Sometimes people are both a and b but sometimes they aren’t.
I don’t like that they are lumped together either…
Hearing and listening are 2 different things…perhaps, more people doing the latter, might make for a more productive conversation.? Of course, some folks spew non-sense on purpose…if that is the end goal, and you don’t make any sense at all…your point is lost…and so have you.
Reality tv seems to be a way for spectators to feel better about themselves because something bad is happening to someone else while they’re secure at home. I feel the same way about those programs in which poor miserable citizens of a certain lower class whose pathetic life is put into display for the purpose of entertainment. They are put in display as an embarrassment to themselves and just to make money. I don’t know if I expressed myself clearly (I’m listening to TYT at the same time).
Clear as a bell to me. I put the origins of Reality TV back in the 1990s’ daytime talk shows… the kind that had topics like “Who’s your baby’s daddy?” Remember the case where a Jenny Jones Show’s guest found out he had a male secret admirer? That guest went on to kill the secret admirer; he was paroled in 2017.
Never a fan myself, I haven’t been able to understand what attracts/ed people to those kinds of shows. At best, they’re vulgar entertainment, nothing more than an expensive way to air one’s dirty laundry (expensive as in production costs).
Of course, we can go back to the 1960s and find sillier and goofier origins for the Bachelor and Bachelorette — namely, The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game. There’s a reason that television was dubbed “the boob tube” in the 1960s… that’s boob as in “stupid person” in case you’re too young to remember that use of the term. :-)
After decades of mind-numbing, lowbrow television, is it any wonder that so many Americans make lousy choices in the voting booth?
