Ana’s commentary at the end is gold.
Guys, people with mental health problems are actually more likely to be victims of violence than to be violent. Blaming mentally ill individuals is not only a scapegoat for guns, but it’s also a harmful, ableist stereotype.

Correction: Kushner is the sun of a successful *criminal*. Though I’m not sure if going to prison counts as “successful”.
How ironically funny that the Republicans could be the ones forced to come for the guns…
Why will my ps4 not play this video it plays hour 2just not hour 1 is there a way to watch on YouTube on ps4 please help It’s the only way I can watch on my TV
Should have gotten an xbox :-P A cheap item like a Chromecast, roku, or an android box like the Nvidia Shield would be a much more versatile media consumption device.
It’s possible the PS4 player has issue with some small segment of the file, or it exceeds some file size limitation. I would suggest trying the low-res version of the video.
I don’t have a PS4 so can’t really help further.
I luv Ana; but where’s Johnny Pie?..
I love that you guys get so angry about this rampant disrespect and mistreatment of women. Anna especially got really mad there. I get that. I do too.
But I think it’s important to realize that right wingers ADMIRE Trump for doing whatever he wants to women BECAUSE he gets away with it. They all wish they could do the same.
To them he’s more of A BOSS because he does and says whatever he wants. To their minds that is more Presidential than anything else. The president is the boss. And Trump acts like a right wing boss. Regard for feminine dignity and the like are laughable to them. Any regard for someone “weaker” is laughable to them. In their world, life is ONLY about brute animal strength… or the perception of it at least. Money and power are today’s manifestations if that strength.
Thus his Republican approval ratings
This forum needs an upvote just for posts like this.
yeah.. well fkn said.
Here’s a crazy left wing conspiracy theory: for decades Donald Trump laundered millions of dollars for wealthy Russians, and on top of that, the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian government operatives to influence the 2017 election. Who would believe something like that?
Does anyone from TYT prep for any of the stories? You’d imagine they would figure out how to pronounce words and names before they go on air. I like that they are not teleprompter zombies, but a little prep would be nice.
Just for the record, the first St. Valentines Day’s massacre in recorded history was 14 Feb 1348, and it was yuge.
https://www.historyandheadlines.com/february-14-1349-st-valentines-day-massacre/
St. Val, himself was beheaded on Feb. 14, around 270 AD, and thus this date.
Cenk, Trump never mentioned the words Bump Stock. In fact Trump went out of his way to make his wording as broad as possible. Obviously he had the NRA or someone that supports the NRA write his speech about banning anything that could turn a gun into a automatic weapon. On right-wing media yesterday they were discussing how anything could be used to turn a gun into an automatic. You could even use rubber bands and a pencil if you hooked them together correctly. Trump made his speech saying he was going to do something and now you are going to see them discussing banning art supplies and how foolish that would be but at least Trump wanted to do something. It’s a ploy and you really have to stop falling for it. Until something is actually done, written, signed, passed, and enforced please don’t get them praise. Once they have earned praise then by all means you should give credit where credit is due.
The only reason we are seeing action this time around is the fact that this school is located in one of the wealthiest town in the entire country and the wealthiest town above 20k in Florida.
Rich people’s kids go to this school and those rich people get to call the shots.
Pardon me for being off-topic, Sec, but my membership is about to run out. So I just wanted to say: I really enjoyed all those debates we had (though there weren’t so many in recent months, simply because of my self-imposed absences). I really enjoyed them and I learned a lot from you.
Due to my growing list of grievances with TYT (mainly as a private organization and over its editorial direction, but people-wise there is much to be reproached too), I’m letting my yearly subscription lapse. There are better things to spend money on.
So I am outta here. I wish you the best of luck in everything, and while I don’t think anyone should hang around this place for too long, it is gratifying to me to think that you’ll be hanging around for a while – because then at least there will be some real debate.
Good luck
P.S. Since there is no private messaging system here, I am forced to inject this into a random thread. And since I don’t know whether you have your email notifications turned on or not, I’ll be injecting it into several threads, for good measure. Apologies in advance for the spam, it’s force majeure.
It saddens me to see you leave. My disagreements with TYT are not that small especially when they talk about particular topics with condescension despite knowing little about them especially religion and economics.
I have enjoyed our little debates and hope I have not caused any ill feelings and apologize for any if they happened and beg your forgiveness.
Ciao and good luck.
Appreciate that. (As you can see, my ticket has not yet run out completely. :) )
No ill feelings whatsoever. I feel like it is more the other way around: I am the one who often gave short grift to your arguments and criticisms of TYT (especially early on) for no other reason than my perceiving a need to defend TYT, or at least defend it in its self-declared role of progressive media. Which was not a good reason. Regrettable and unwise choices on my part.
No such reflexive defenses will be made by me again, and I hope you’ll continue to dispense the disagreements on economics and religion. :) For a while yet. And even if it is probably more feedback than TYT deserves.
So your rabbis interpretation is just as stupid as Cenks and the pro-life interpretation……maybe, we should avoid taking moral lessons from a book for barbarians by barbarians
Your oligarchy has tanks and nukes…..your thoughts of a armed rebellion are cute and pathetic to think you can stop the government by allowing the mentally impared access to firearms….
You said it yourself… we allow our mentally impaired citizens to buy guns. There is only one way to get rid of guns, and that is to evolve out of the necessity it provides. I live around a ton of skinny, weak, ignorant red necks. A gun instantly makes them 5’11” @ 190lbs. For some it instantly makes them 6’6″ / 240lbs. There is no gun control discussion that includes all guns. It doesn’t matter what other countries do, citizens will find a way to keep some guns at all costs. Gun powder was a catalyst in shifting the balance of power from the big and strong to pretty much anyone. People aren’t going to give that up easily regardless of the human cost.
Okay, that being said, when we admit to ourselves that we are not in control of our own government are we really ready to give up some of these weapons. When the president creates his own private army using private “security” firms, are we sure we don’t need a few sane people with an AR15. It sucks what is happening, and there needs to be bans NOW, but I’m hesitant because I don’t believe yet that we (us here, progressives) might not be the last line of defense of an oligarchy taking control of the most powerful military on the planet.
Cenk, I don’t wanna play devil’s advocate here–or in this case, God’s advocate? Really, what’s the difference–but the passage you’re constantly referring to is not pro-abortion in our modern sense, and certainly not to Christians.
The passage only says “miscarriage/abortion” in modern translations. The original, literal Hebrew is not “cause her a miscarriage” but “cause her thigh to rot.” A thousand years later, when the rabbis sat down and tried to figure out what all the cryptic stuff in the Bible means, they said, for example, that this passage means “cause her a miscarriage.” Christians will just turn around and say: “It literally says ’cause her thigh to rot,’ so that’s what I believe happens.”
Even if Christians were to grant you that the passage talks about abortion, they would point out the fact that *God* is the one performing the abortion, and he has the power and right over life and death, whereas human beings don’t.
As agnostics/atheists, we need better counter-apologetics.
Hooray!! Thank you,Cenk, for the segment on “Split Decision” – highlighting how popular Trump is among his base.
Unfortunately, the Democrats are not paying attention. They seem hellbent on repeating the mistake of the 2016 election – namely, nominating a candidate that is popular among Dems but anathema to the GOP.
Take the Ohio Governor’s race. Dennis Kucinich is being excoriated by the #Resistance Mafia for having appeared on Fox News, for having congratulated Trump on his election, and for going after the Deep State for their assault on the President. It seems that the Democrats are turning the primary into a contest for who can be the most “pure” in their absolute hatred for Trump and absolute disdain for his supporters.
For the General Election the Democrats are barrelling towards nominating an Establishment Democrat who will run as the “anti-Trump” candidate, with a policy agenda dominated by DACA and immigration rights.
This in a State that Trump won by almost 10 points!
Now I must admit, my assumption that Richard Cordray, the Establishment Democratic candidate, will run on DACA is based only o the focus group results that Cenk covered in yesterday’s show. I can only guess what Cordray will run n because THERE ARE NO POLICY OR PLATFORM POSITIONS ON HIS WEBSITE (cordrayforohio.com). Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Just some platitudes about “focusing on the kitchen table issues that keep families up at night.” Bravo.
So – this is living proof of that focus group result that Cenk mentioned: “The Republicans have a bad agenda; the Democrats have no agenda.”
In the absence of real policy convictions, I can only surmise that he will be running an an anti-Trump platform.
Kucinich, on the there hand, has a platform that is chock full of Democratic policy initiatives: Universal healthcare, Living Wage, ending for-profit prisons, legalising weed, banning fracking, criminal justice reform and on and on.
From Cordray? NOTHING.
So look forward to another force-fed establishment candidate running in Ohio and losing for lack of a platform or a message that will galvanise voters, and instead relying on those “moderate Republicans” who also hate Trump.
Sheesh. It’s like watching a car wreck in slow motion.
Cenk, you completely fell for the ridiculous right wing interpretation of the “KILL THE NRA” graffiti. As you often point out: corporations and organizations like the NRA are legal fictions. Killing them usually doesn’t involve violence or guns of any kind. In fact there are almost no contemporary examples of organizations being destroyed by violence. Usually any attempt to do so results in martyrdom and often has the opposite effect.
“Kill the NRA” is not a call to violence. It is a call to end violence by dismantling the chief peddlers of it.
Thank you for debunking the now-familiar response of “we have to improve mental health care!” Of course access to free mental health care in the US would be great, but that’s about as likely as getting medicare for all passed–unlikely with Repubs in power. There are so many problems with the mental-health argument: What mental health disorders would make a person unable to buy guns? Depression? OCD? Most disorders have a spectrum of severity–where would the gun-ownership line be drawn? What about people with anti-social personality disorder–formerly known as psychopathy and sociopathy; many of these people are perfectly capable of hiding their illness and some are not even aware they are different. What if someone’s illness is controlled by medications? Can they own a gun? How will data on mental health be disseminated in a way that keeps the person’s medical information private? How will you convince gun-owning people to get help for mental problems if they are afraid their guns will be taken away? One symptom is a very serious indicator of violence against humans–hurting animals, but since people insist that humans are so superior to animals and because other people like to hunt, this symptom is not called out until AFTER the fact. (By the way, I’m not saying all hunters fit into this category–some might, but many care about making a “humane” kill.) Schizophrenia often manifests at the age of this recent shooter and can cause hallucinations and crazy behavior, but most Americans have no understanding of this. I suffer from depression but haven’t suffered any symptoms after finding a good drug combination to treat it over 10 years ago. I own a gun for personal defense–I am a woman who likes to live alone and this tool allows me to do so without being in fear of someone breaking in and hurting me. I can’t even kill a worm.
Jack Kingston probably got his talking point from Rush Limbaugh. Sadly his radio show plays in Upstate New York and while flipping through channels I caught him spouting the same depreciatory message as FORMER Rep. Jack Kingston.
Surprise those buses are being paid for by Senator Lauren Book of Broward County, And former Florida Democratic Party chair Allison Tant. Tant said also help to facilitate the rally will be Florida Coalition to prevent gun violence, The league of women voters , Florida PTA, Equality Florida, The Campaign to keep guns off campus and other organization. This from The Tallahassee Democrat. Wow, just maybe that republican was partially right. You give these kids too much credit, you don’t think that organization like FCTPGV and TCTKGOC wouldn’t jump at the chance to use these kids to further their agenda? Really? I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn I’ll sell you cheap. Democrat are not the saints you think they are. Just like you quoted Everytown for gun safety in their erroneous statement that said there has been 18 mass school shooting this year. By the way I have heard you guys at TYT apologize for disseminating false information or are you going to be just like Fox News?
Boy, according to you The NRA can do nothing right If they had tweeted you would have crucified them, if they said nothing they are terrible. Look I didn’t tweet about the school shooting does that mean I don’t care about those kids? What act of god Makes you, Cenk Unger, the judge on who cares for what You are getting a big head Thinking you are better than all of us plebians out here.
Sorry you are so wedded to the NRA, but trolls will be trolls.
Yes, the NRA can do nothing right because their ultimate goal is NOT to “help people protect themselves.”
There business model is to sell more firearms.
How is that done? The quickest way (since business is pro-sugar high) is FEAR.
Obama will take your guns. FEAR. Sales skyrocket.
Trump is supposedly pro-gun. No Fear, Sales plummet.
NRA is the front for gun manufacturers, they don’t give a shit about their individual members.
Absolutely, the NRA can do nothing right. They are an insidious organization that has no concern for this country or it’s people. Sales is all they care about. They sit back and laugh as we kill each other with their insane weapons. All automatic weapons should be banned and all other weapons should be well regulated. But that would require a sane society, something we are losing inch by inch.
It takes a superior plebeian to recognize a superior plebeian…
Yes … how diabolical. An agenda that includes making semi-automatic weapons illegal.
Here are the current gun laws (such as they are) in Florida: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_Florida
Are you saying that the laws are OK … that they are enough … that we should do NOTHING ???
To quote the kids … I call BS.
I’m sorry Ben Shapiro is a waste of oxygen. For an intelligent educated guy he uses his abilities just arguing and criticizing. He never offers any real solutions.
Try watching Kyle’s Secular Talk segments with Benny-boy.
There are few that can master the Mind-grating Annoying Voice (think Gilbert Gottfried or Fran Drescher), but Ben is easily up there in the Top 10.
I find it hard to consider any argument he has, since his vocal expulsions are so distracting.
I cannot watch you before bed as you make me too angry to sleep. My only consolation on all this madness is I am not an American.
I absolutely love your rage Ana! You talked about being a rolemodel for young women … well, I´m 53 and you inspire me every day!
Cenk, we have to stop pretending that we are living in a democratic country with a government that represents the people. This country is a corporate-owned and corporate-run, oligarchic, political banana republic, where everything is determined and decided by the corporate bottom line, INCLUING THE VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE. Besides the continuation of mass murders in schools, theaters and public places, we have 35,000 Americans dying each year because they cannot afford the insurance premiums required by the corporate for-profit healthcare industry.
These unbelievable human violation are taking place under the banner of “We the People” and the country proclaiming to be “one nation under god with liberty and justice for all,” The phoniness of it all is causing deep feelings of contempt.
These kids arent millennials. I know everyone likes to use the term as a catch-all for young people, but these kids are the next generation. And they most certainly can organize and fund-raise. Its not that hard in the internet age.
Don’t yall just love it right before a break, if Cenk is fired up about something he says “Young Turks” and does the what’s up nod? Lol Cenk is badass. …not just Cenk… The Young Turks is badass! Keep it up!
That is old school Young Turks.
My fear with gun regulation implementation is that the mass shootings will continue and gun nuts will say I told you so. We’ll hear the mantra “gun regs take guns away from law abiding Americans and put them in the hands of criminals through the black market” They won’t look at statistics related to gun control if the number of shootings decrease, instead, they’ll come out of the woodwork every time there’s another shooting. (Similar logic to: Why are there still blizzards in Boston if the globe is warming?).
Gun regulation is a start but in order to finish the killings the guns must go away or new tech will be developed to disable them or track them in gun free zones. Then we need more gun free zones.
I have the same fear. I have been an advocate for gun control for nearly twenty years and have studied lots of statistics on the issue. An assault weapon ban may have an impact on mass shootings, but they will still happen. The overall stats on gun violence, though, are unlikely to change with an assault weapon ban. Most firearm deaths are not from assault weapons (and not from homicides, most are suicides). Anything short of a ban on handguns is unlikely to have a significant impact on firearm deaths, and I think we are really far away from making a handgun ban politically viable.
I would go so far as to ban any firearm purpose built for killing humans (all handguns, all assault weapons, etc), leaving only firearms with significant utility (hunting, pest control, etc) and only allowing ownership to permit holders who have demonstrated a need for this utility.
This sounds drastic, but would almost certainly eliminate the vast majority of homicides, and save even more lives from being lost to suicide.
We could also use ammunition control. Unsolved murders would go way down if we required all ammunition to have traceable serial numbers. Being able to track ammunition thru to the point of sale would be invaluable to crime investigation while doing nothing to curtail the rights of lawful gun owners.
I couldn’t find the One America News tweet from Feb. 20 that Cenk referenced. Maybe they deleted it, but the graphics used on TYT for that tweet didn’t look like how other tweets are formatted. I was about to quote it to a friend but I just wanted to see it for myself on their twitter page. I have no love for One America News and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they actually tweeted that, but I couldn’t find it. Maybe I just don’t know how to use Twitter. Hopefully, that is the case. Most likely, it is.
I think they deleted the tweet, as it’s referenced here: https://thinkprogress.org/the-new-smear-campaign-against-students-who-survived-the-parkland-massacre-b71c1e1d722c/
And there seem to be some people tweeting about @OANN saying something to that effect here: https://twitter.com/search?q=oann%20miami%20field%20office&src=typd
But maybe it’s an error on thinkprogress’s part?
Back in 2016 you were talking about the insufficiency of gradualism so by that logic banning bump stocks shouldn’t be celebrated..
Now Trump will get positive press and the real problem will be pushed to the side, forgotten. Ban all assault rifles, thats what makes sense. Ideally just ban guns.
Here is an article on how the kids are organizing. You have probably seen some of there faces already. Seems like they really have built a strong group and community as a way to channel emotions that not many could even imagine.
https://www.buzzfeed.com/remysmidt/heres-what-its-like-at-the-headquarters-of-the-teens?utm_term=.scD7mkM0N#.bqpA9DPpX
Thanks for the link. Of course, Rep. Jack Kingston is incorrect in his assertions, which dramatically demonstrates how useless he is as an elected representative from his constituents’ point of view. These children are rising to the occasion, which is what leaders do. I doubt Kingston ever rose for anything, except to reach up for an NRA check!
Here’s the game rump, the repubs and nra are playing. See, we banned bump stocks, now all you silly children can stop all this nonsense about gun regulation and go back to school where you belong.
buffalospirits, you clearly outlined the repub/nra response, but you provided no opinion as to a likely response from the kids. What if their response would be to organize a nationwide high-school walk-out? Any thoughts?
TYT needs a cyber security/intelligence expert. You’re an internet company. How does EVERY technology story get butchered? It’s embarrassing
Mostlychip your right its only can be done within the legislative branch signed by the President.
Banning bumpstocks is literally the least that could do. But, like Cenk, I’ll take it.
The ATF said clearly that they did not have legislative authority to ban bump stocks. If they reverse themselves it’ll go to court and they’ll lose…. but probably not until after the 2018 elections.
