Steve is joined by Aaron Wysocki and a very special guest from Japan, Karen. Karen talks about what it’s like being an American living in Japan and what prompted her to move there. The trio play a “2002 edition” multiple choice quiz in honor of TYT’s 16th anniversary.

Karen is so cool
Karrenola-senpai was sugoi!! So sweet, funny, and persobable! There are plenty of people who can write a good comment, but would be flat and uninteresting on camera. Karren was so damn fantastic. She could host her own show.
I love Japan as well, haven’t been fortunate enough to visit, but I was so happy to see her rocking that dope ass kimono. This is old Karren, so you may not read this, but if you do just know I’m your #1 fan.
Are you serious? ??
This was heart wrenching. This karenola appearance was a disaster.
Poor karenola
wow! wow wow wow!! i just LOVED all of these great stories bout Cenk! loved the way steve told them and loved Aaron and Karenola’s contributions as well!!!
thank you so much guys for a really special postgame!!!!
i’ll always be one of the proud 19 …
Hey guys, it’s already time for the next Friday Post Game, things just seem to go by so fast. It’s already been five days since landing back in Tokyo on Monday the 19th (Sunday night Feb.18 Los Angeles time). Funny how it was 9 hours flying into LA but nearly 12 hours coming back to Tokyo.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank ALL yous guys out there for supporting TYT, without you all there’d be no Friday Post Game let alone guests. You ‘Proud Nineteen’ are, in the words of Muhammad Ali, ‘The GREATEST!
I flew in to LA on February 14th around 10am, and as I was walking into the lobby of my hotel a couple of hours later the wifi kicked in and my phone lit up with news of the recent Florida school murders. I was too early to check in, so I decided to just sit in the lobby and watch Aggressive Progressives, which was live. It was a really weird feeling watching AG knowing it was going on just a few miles from where I sat, and it also really disturbed me to be back home yet not AT home from my own fear of so many guns and assault rifles around. The cold I’d just gotten over the previous weekend left me with a really bad cough and diminished voice, which the flight over made worse despite the Japanese mask I wore. As you all heard, my condition didn’t really improve the next day for the filming. After I could check in I popped by the supermarket, got some take out and went back to my room to rest and watch the main show and a nice, fresh live Old School. I wondered how Cenk and everybody made it through that day.
February 14th is the anniversary of TYT. It is also Valentines Day, which puts loads of pressure on couples married and unmarried in the States, including on TYT staff. There were also staff losing their minds getting ready for the Sweet 16 TYT Anniversary Party with hundreds of fans, as well as already having lost their minds from prep for the shows of the day with a constant, heart-dropping flow of updates on the school shooting. All this, yet TYT staff greeted me with such calm collectedness and warmth. They didn’t have to go on with my part in the filming but they did and super graciously at that.
On Friday morning and afternoon I chased away the maid service, crashed and gave up shopping to rest my voice. In the evening I went to see Jimmy Dore at Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank. His wife Stef Zamorano was there along with Ron Placone and Graham Elwood. Steve Oh was there too and he KILLED it, Jimmy got soooo maaaad at him LOLOL. Stolen thunder. I greeted Graham in my awful voice after the show with other fans, you guys can see me there without a kimono on Graham’s YouTube channel. Then the wifi in the club blew out and MAN was it ever hard to get an Uber. When your phone is based overseas you can NOT have your data on, you depend on wifi and in these current confederate times in the States I flip out about not being safely picked up in front of a venue. Steve was just outside talking to some guests which relieved me soooo much till the Uber driver could spot me.
Things always jam up our plans no matter what precautions we take, I seriously believe management skill comes not from how well you plan but how well you handle fumbles, on-the-flys and fuck-ups. That’s an area of mine that definitely needs improvement.
You guys know Cenk is bound to do another one of these parties at some point, and you KNOW Jimmy’s out there taking no prisoners quite a few times a year at a comedy venue. GO SEE THEM! It was sooo worth my plane ticket and stay just to shake Steve’s hand and look into Cenk’s eyes. There was Ben Mankiewicz – sooo awesome! And Johnny Pie who told me he’s a Hatstall – a combination of Ravenclaw and Slytherin, my fellow Potterheads. And of course Ana, she was sooo lovely and gracious out there. And DAVE KOLLER! Guys, I saw Dave walk by me at the studio and after I said ‘Hi Dave, thanks for everything’ he went ‘Thanks for what?’ I told him Steve invited me on the PG and he went something like ‘I wouldn’t know’ and kept walking off. HAHAAA!!! That’s Dave, he’s so shy! |I knew I’d corner him later and I managed to do just that at the party. Dave is a GEM guys, he knows soooo much. I asked him to please come on to impart more about South America and about Simon Bolivar. Only Dave can serve that meal. And Jayar!! What a warm, sweet guy. Irina the Irridescent! Gigi the Great! Irma the Irresistible! Aaron the Awesome! Matt the Magnificent! Bart the Brave! Jacorey Here Come the Judge!
You Proud Nineteen have GOT to go meet these people. Start saving. Even the horror of all that happened in Florida could not take the joy away from me upon seeing the TYT people because I know they are there to help us bring sanity to end the madness. That party was AWESOME, Alison Hartson was there and she also came to see Jimmy at Flappers. So you have GOT to go! Make it a vacation, Save up and when that party invite hits your inbox GO!!!
Love you guys! Thanks again, it was awesome out-of-control.
Karen, I’m right there with you on the UHF TV shows. I grew up in Chicago and my favorite shows were Speed Racer, Prince Planet, Ultraman and The Space Giants and some others. I think I’m a couple of years younger than you. My mom would come in while I was watching Ultraman or The Space Giants (not Speed Racer) and say, “You like those Japanese cartoons, huh?” I was like, “MA! These aren’t cartoons! These are REAL!” I meant “live-action,” of course, but didn’t know that term at the time. That was back in the late 70s/early 80s. I was so glad to hear someone say “Prince Planet” ’cause nobody outside of Chicago around that time, throughout my life, seemed to have heard of it and it barely inched out Speed Racer as my favorite show. Thanks for the memories.
Wow, it’s so great that you all feature a viewer on the show! Great episode!!
Hey tut just joined last year I caught with all the last post games now catching with the old schools for Dees so called progressive group’s hating on Russia content Fuck ‘Em Hard Fuck”em fast I love tyt !
Proud to be one of the 19 viewers!
My Twitter handle: karrenola
Got back to Tokyo about 12 hour’s ago, what a great trip to LA!
Thanks again Aaron! ???
I brought shame to my family with my quiz performance. #sad.
Great show! Great quiz and it was fun seeing a TYT member on the panel!
It’s also always good to see Aaron on air!
Cenk is a fighter, no question. But I really do prefer him and everyone else fighting in a more figurative sense, the physical stuff impresses me far less. What if the guy had just stabbed Cenk? Human beings aren’t always rational, Cenk could’ve died that day or got seriously injured. One could say “without risk, no win and at least he would’ve stood up to injustice”, but what is that compared to Cenk’s actual accomplishments? I don’t know, it’s not really a criticism of Cenk either, it’s just that getting into physical fights will never get any kind of respect from me…
Thanks!
As a woman, I have not often been endangered by a physical confrontation. In the one case of a stranger attacking me on the beach, I will say that I was very grateful when his friends physically intervened. As a teacher in an inner city highschool, I physically intervened in stupid fights by just interjecting my fat-old-white-lady body between theirs. And I will say that -although I precariously straddle the fence on gun issues – I know where I’m going when the Zombies (or police) show up….my ex-marine son’s house. There are times when walking away is not the best option and words are not enough.
I agree, of course. My point is just that I don’t wanna glorify it.
It should always be the last action and something that is unfortunate,
but has/had to be done, not something to be proud of…
If that wasn’t clear enough, what I’m referring to is the whole “toxic masculinity” issue – a lot of people on the left talk about that issue, but then keep on giving men credit for being “real men”(being “strong”, impulsive, hard, “cool”(in the sense of emotionally cold), physically competitive, not too smart or nerdy, outspokenly ignorant when it comes to science, embarrassed by knowledge, yet interested in sports), fulfilling their gender role/stereotype while taking away credit for going against their gender expectations (being weak, needing help, being (too) nice, being “a pushover”/not persistent in principle but pragmatic/diplomatic approach in dealing with conflict instead of confrontational/competitive, not being physically impressive, “can’t get laid”, etc etc etc). It’s just something that I recognize more and more lately (whether the phenomenon becomes more common or I’m just thinking about it more, I don’t know, but it is happening). “Being cool”/getting credit as a man often entails behavior that in another context would be considered problematic (or toxic) and seems to be based in patriarchy or by total coincidence happens to align itself with behavior based in or criticized as derived from patriarchy.
Legendary post game, amazing quiz. I hope you guys continue the quiz of the next 8 years on the next Friday post game.
I think I would’ve done much better if we continued until 2017.
It was great to see Karen, and learn more about her life. It’s nice to see another 40+ woman representing. I still think TYT should do a viewer or member census. That way, you get a more accurate look at who your audience is, their likes and dislikes, and how they watch the show. The Vlogbrothers do one every year, and I always love watching the hour long breakdown of the results.
I only missed one on the quiz, so yay! Aaron: Always go with your first choice unless there was an obvious logical flaw or misunderstanding when you made it.
I totally agree with Steve’s frustration over the long interlude during “Light My Fire” where there is no need for one either conceptually or symbolically. In fact, it takes away from the enjoyability quite a bit.
It was so great to meet Karen in person! I love our audience, always such interesting stories.
AARON HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD OF JOANNA NEWSOM?! 15 MINUTE SONGS CAN BE PULLED OFF BY THE ONE AND ONLY JOANNA
I’ll have to check it out.
She’s an acquired taste her vocals are different. Best song imo is Sprout and the Bean.
Cenk was AWE INSPIRING to meet in person Eljojolopez, the calm humility of the guy. He had NO time, I repeat NO TIME to talk to me but he took a minute to do just that. All I saw was a guy who is there sacrificing himself doing it all for US. All I could think of doing was asking him to please ignore me and get on with way more important work.
Thanks for coming in Karen! It was so great to meeting. Thank you also for the gift! Also, what’s your twitter handle?
Thanks nothingbeforeus, it was AW SOME being on with the legendary Steve Oh and Aaron Wysocki. They knew I was suffering from fallout after a bad cold I’d gotten a week before I flew into LA the day before this, with half a voice and they STILL let me on.
Listen. Number one, I would NOT have been able to go to college OR finish with a BA without BEOG, the City of Philadelphia Scholarship, a PA state grant and a couple of others to get me through the – are you ready? – $3,500 – $4,000 per year tuition it cost to go to U Penn in those days. Can you fathom it? An ‘Ivy League’ (whatever that means these days) costing (pinky to mouth) THAT much? I thought it was kind of high back then, didn’t think it was inescapable though. Got a student loan for the $3,000 scholarships didn’t cover and paid it off after one year working in Japan. Don’t know HOW college costs have gone ballistic like NOW, can’t figure why a Civil War Part II didn’t break out over it.
I totally understand dropping out from that crazy cost, it makes me soooooo angry, I’m like HEY BLACK PEOPLE PUT A HOLD ON THAT BLACK PANTHER MOVIE TICKET FEE and HIT THE STREETS WITH YOUR BRETHREN OF ALL COLORS PROTESTING THIS WILD TUITION THAT’S BLOCKING EVERYONE’S FUTURE!
Number two, you gotta want the dream bad enough to make it happen, and you gotta stick it out. Then you gotta appreciate all the people who helped you get there, like Mom and Dad. Never would’ve made it without their support, food, a roof over my head, etc. Fight with ‘em yes, but appreciate ‘em at regular intervals along the way.
Dad called my Japanese landlady from his home in LA about a month before he died in 1985, using a live AT&T translator. She ran up to my apartment crying, because he told her she had proved him wrong about Japanese being racists. He said he had no words for how lovingly she’d been looking after his oldest daughter halfway across the world, said he wanted to thank her himself, as close as he could get. ???
More soon guys, I’m on my last day in LA today (Saturday February 17th) before flying back to Tokyo.??
After this post game no joke Cenk has officially became an idol and a new hero of mine I pictured everything in my head when Steve told the story of Cenk just walking towards the knife omg!!! I really hope I get to meet him in person one day
Thanks for watching!
Indeed.
Poor Karen. Who’s idea was it to subject her to the rantings of a deranged fake leftist with the political analysis of a toddler?
Lunacy is ripe in these days i see.
What lunacy? Jimmy Dore is a moron.
This is NOT spam. Posting on the 3 parts of today’s show so those visiting only 1 don’t miss it: Guns are an imortant issue but guess what you did? Better than before lately on TYT, but then you do what every other outlet but one, publishing a single Jew in an op-ed saying what no one else will, because ‘it’s just Jews’: Imagine how Jews see this (I know that’s crazy to do since it’s ‘just Jews’ & they must not be considered on the Left or Right even right after mass-murdering domestic Right-Wing terrorism):
One outlet acknowledges Jew-Hate but also fails to call this the domestic Right-Wing mass-murdering terrorism it is. So I was wrong that no one would call out the Jew-Hate ever as central to this vile attack [but only from one Jew at one outlet]. Not wrong by much though in our culture where it’s so politically incorrect to point that out, certainly not with news vs op-ed. From the op-ed:
While there is room to question Cruz’s exact motivations, I find it troubling that such a visible connection to anti-Semitism is being overlooked as irrelevant enough to entirely exclude it from many major news articles; if a white supremacist blatantly and frequently spoke about abhorrence for any other minority and then shot up a school- even one he used to attend- that consisted mostly of members of that ethnic group, people would be rioting. People are notrioting and not taking Cruz’s anti-Semitism seriously because common anti-Semitic tropes paint Jews as powerful and privileged, which leaves room for people to ignore the fact that our long history of oppression continues to this day.
~~~
Unfortunately, she does not call it anything close to domestic Right-Wing terrorism. She also resorts to Intersectionalism & calls Jews white, denies Jews are hated for the Race not just the Religion & argues only that people please please consider it a hate crime. It’s beyond hate crime. It’s mass-murdering domestic Right-Wing terrorism out of rising ideology not dismissable individual mental illness.
that could go for ever i love the old stories. Really want to know how Aaron thinks Cenk changed his life. In like a good work way or a hope for humanity way.
1) He gave me a job that allows me to support a family and experience things that I never would’ve before TYT.
2) Absolutely in a hope for humanity way. We need more people fighting for what’s right in America.
the party isn’t to be found anywhere yet, as of Saturday morning in Europe. I don’t mind that as things take time to edit, just stop saying it is available until it is actually available.
Apologies, you’re totally right.
Karen, you are awesome!! This was really fun to watch. Just wanted to say that you’re living my dream, but I was born the year you moved to Japan, and by the time I went to college I had to drop out because I couldn’t afford to keep paying for it.
Starblazers!!!
I’m watching:).
Really cool to see a Friday post game viewer on the Friday post game! Also, I totally agree about Murder With Friends being the best, there isn’t a single episode I haven’t seen. LOVE IT.
I live in Japan, when I go to California can I go on the show too? :)
Hell, I live in LA…can I come on?
