  1. Watch more. They detail that mental health issues arise in the US at the same rate as other developed nations, but the gun violence rate is much higher here. They very plainly say it isn’t a mental health issue.

  3. Democracy Now! has excellent coverage of this school shooting today.

    The psychiatrist who Amy interviewed claims statistics that mentally ill people are actually less likely to commit violence and actually more likely to be victims of violence than the general population.

    It’s a total red herring and senseless stigmatization to blame mental illness and propose mental health care as the solution when there is no evidence that this shooter would ever be diagnosed or treated in the absence of the shooting.

    Cenk, in parroting Trump’s mental health canard, no matter what qualifications you couched it in, you have let your viewers down.

    There is more to this story than even Democracy Now! brought forth.

    The mental health profession worldwide has no diagnosis for lone wolf anger any more than it has for fascistic patriarchal complicity or even religiously inspired homophobia. This omission in the mental health profession persists despite ample evidence that all of these are pathological traits associated primarily with emotional dysfunction from the cycle of domestic abuse, and the resulting social isolation of dangerous PTSD-addled and politically misguided wackos.

    50% of shooters are also certain to be queer in some fashion per the most recent studies of the general youth population in the U.K. and likely a higher proportion of queers is represented among school shooters than the general population, if taking into account the natural tendency of queers to hide in the self-loathing closet from schoolyard bullying and parental ostracism, until they finally lash out when their lives become unmanageable under a belief system that dehumanizes their own junk.

    Mental health professionals are still coming to grips with the reality of gay marriage after decades of fake diagnoses applied to queers. Doctors have no tools to solve this problem and until quite recently were officially part of the problem en masse. In many sexually oppressed nations doctors still are part of the problem.

    Toxic masculinity in a US society that lacks a solid moral underpinning, with increasingly high-tech social stratification and division, is not considered pathological by doctors. Hopping up depressed and anxious kids on stimulating antidepressants that increase aggression (per the animal studies the manufacturers use to measure effectiveness of the drug, where increased aggression is the sole criterion) only makes the problem of school violence worse. This was Michael Moore’s retrospective outlook years after he produced Bowling for Columbine.

    Psychiatrists will never solve political problems.

    This chaos we experience is the logical result of runaway, legalized corruption where legislators work only for their donors.

    One potential solution is to get the money out of politics. Another is to replace water fluoridation with CBD cannabinoid. Both are equally improbable and most likely also equally ineffective in the long term.

    The best solution for someone seeking an immediate and effective solution is to emigrate. The way things are going here, that may become a trend as the financial situation deteriorates under Trump.

    Primarying corrupt Democrats who throw their swing votes toward corporate interests may help more in the long run than any other approach. It’s a systemic approach to a systemic problem and a logical starting point in finally bringing the USA into the 21st century.

    Meanwhile kids are dying and your corrupt legislators have dollar signs for eyeballs.

    My favorite quote from the show: “Marco, where’s all your facts?” LOL. I loved the clip from the Republican saying Republicans will never do anything on gun control–it really brought home the point. Great show Cenk.

  6. I am so done with the “well they’ll get the guns anyway” argument. You believe in laws or you don’t and I refuse to even pretend that the conversation is anything else.

    I am also done with the “well they’ll kill with a car” one. You either know the difference between a car and gun or you probably shouldn’t have access to either. If your main point requires you pretending to be ignorant than get a new one.

  7. One of my pro-gun co-workers says that the laws are already in play for stricter gun control, but that the local governments refuse to enforce them. How true or false is this statement?

    1. Well, in the program Cenk tells us that Trump and his henchmen are cutting funds from programs that help identify people in background checks who should not have access to guns. I would guess that is a favorite way of Republicans to get around gun control laws: refuse to fund them. The old starve-the-government-until-it-is-small-enough-to-drown-in-a-bathtub strategy. Then they point at the result of poor funding and lack of oversight to “prove” gun control doesn’t work.

    Question for other more learned members than me: Does anyone know if there will still be a show tonight (Friday the 16th), and if there is will there still be a Power Panel? Or will the TYT birthday party count as our big deal for the week?

    Oh, and my roommate just signed up with Aspiration.com, and I’ll report back on how he finds the experience; perhaps it will help some of us decide whether it would be a good fit for them, too.

  9. I was surprised that the leader of the white nationalist group was quick to do an interview stating that they helped train the shooter. It seemed odd that they would want to be associated with the murder of children. Then, I figured it out. The white nationalists feel so emboldened by trump that they are using this shooting for recruitment. “hey, are you angry and want to kill people – we’ll train you how to do it!”

  12. Well, it depends on the definition, as the article explains.

    It’s true that we have to be careful with what we say, or the opponents of gun control will grasp at straws.

    But according to the article, there were still 8 instances of intentional shootings in schools in 2018. And 5 of these injured people.

    In my entire life, I have never once feared to be shot. I’m not sure that school shootings happen more than once in a decade in Canada.

    Regardless of the exact number, what is happening in the US is not normal.

    1. Well, that is an interesting article, but whatever point you think you are making is very muddied. First, it is not TYT that inflated anything. They repeated a stat from an organization that tracks school shootings. That organization is VERY clear about how they define a school shooting — any time a firearm discharges a live round on school grounds. Seems like a fair definition to me. “School shooting” does not mean “school slaughter” which appears to be how you interpret it.

      But this part really leaped out at me — talk about how anesthetized we are in the USA…! “Just five of Everytown’s 18 school shootings listed for 2018 happened during school hours and resulted in any physical injury. ”

      Hey, “just” five. Only five shootings happened during school hours and injuries people. Only five, in 2018.

      Only five. and we’re already halfway through February. Only five so far, in 2018. So what’s the big deal?

  14. Once again, Australia introduced tighter gun regulations immediately after the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre and we haven’t a mass shooting since. Between 1997-2015 (inclusive) we had 762 gun homicides. In comparison, during the same period, the US had 225,684 gun homicides (triple that number if you want total gun deaths). Even if you scale that number to account for population, the rate of gun homicide in the US is about 22.5 times higher based on those number. For further context, 225,684 gun homicides is equivalent to the combat deaths of the following wars:
    1.1 x Civil War
    2 x WW1
    .75 x WW2
    4.5 x Vietnam War
    39 x Iraq/Afghanistan (combined)
    and 75 x 9/11

    As for the argument, “you cant outlaw it because criminals will just keep using guns”…..well that has to be straight up the dumbest fucking argument I have ever heard, since it could be applied to EVERY law, yet I don’t hear conservatives arguing “why bother having immigration laws and building a wall, people will still come here anyway”, “why bother trying to outlaw abortion, criminals will still have abortions”, “why crack down on drugs or gang related violence, drug takers will keep taking drugs and criminals will still be gang bangers” – it’s just a fucking stupid argument that makes no sense and anyone that makes it needs to be called out immediately.

    Finally, on the “but more guns means more safety because you can defend yourself” (i.e. the ‘good guy with a gun’ argument) is probably the second dumbest. If that was the case, the US would have the lowest rates of gun homicide and no mass shootings since they have orders of magnitude more guns than any other country in the developed world, yet low and behold, the US is the ONLY country that has an epidemic of slaughter of this magnitude, which means either that logic is flawed, or Americans are (in which case, they probably shouldn’t have guns).

    3. I agree that he’s the Alex Jones on the right, but I don’t think Cenk should punish him. Unlike Alex Jones and Gateway Pundit, he says that it isn’t a fact and that it is just speculation, so it technically isn’t fake news.

      Either way, Cenk doesn’t pay him to do the JD show, and AP isn’t really a news show.

  20. When it comes to White Supremacists, KKK, Neo-Nazis or extremist of any kind, do not tolerate these thugs, nor their ilk because that is not being fair and tolerant. It is being ignorant of what damage they do. Not all humans are inherently good. They can change but you can not afford to wait for that just in case. Society is our cooperative means to live together, all of us. Anyone who projects hatred to one of our family, blacks, browns, reds or yellow, attacks all of us. And they will come for you eventually. Extremists are in general deadly to a equitable society whether they are socially extremist, politically or religious. We must not allow this to continue or we will be awash in the blood of innocents. The First Amendment allows them to voice their hatred, but we, the People, have an equal right to say “no. Not this time, and never again.” Not just to help the Jews or the Blacks but EVERYONE being oppressed and ground down. We must establish a new world ethic of love, support and inclusion, not tolerance.

  21. It’s not just guns, it’s healthcare too. We may have the same amount of mentally ill people in Norway, but everyone can afford mental healthcare, and kids are more likely to get help at an early age. And if mentally ill people are too sick to hold down a job, they will still be able to live a decent life, have a decent home, buy proper food, etc.

    Being a Norwegian that’s against arming our police, I’m definitely all for strong gun regulation in America. However, the right wing always say “it’s not guns that kill people, it’s the mentally ill people.” So ask them: so you are for free healthcare then? If you can’t get through on one issue, go straight for the other. They’re both important.

Thank You for this answer I two believe this I have been a combat soldier and suffer from PTSD for more than 45 years had not been able to get any help until recently because I can’t afford the therapist. I’m 66 years old The government did this to me and I have to pay out of my pocket for help. I can’t imagine a child with problems can get any help either.
