  1. I just want to comment on the whole maternity leave thing in light of Trump wanting people “from countries like Norway” to come to the U.S.:

    I’m Canadian and we probably have one of the best maternity leave policies in the world. It’s, I think actually 13 months now, and can be split between the spouses however they want (I say spouses because we also have marriage equality). Now why would someone from a country like mine, where we don’t have to stress about simple life things like having babies or getting sick, want to move to a country like the U.S.

    And I have to go a bit harder than that. I have lived in 5 countries outside of my own: Germany and Denmark which a pretty nice places, but also Russia, Afghanistan, and Vietnam, so my standards ain’t that high. I think I usually looked at what my quality of life was going to be like with my salary and what I had access to. I know that no one is dying to live in Russia, but I gotta say, I’d pick living in Russia (well Moscow) over the U.S. every time. Russia has free health care, it ain’t great but if you have to go, you can go. An inhaler cost about $5 USD and one the higher end, Interferon costs about $50 for a pack. And in all honesty, I’m way more afraid of the American police than the Russian ones. Don’t get me wrong, Russia has some serious problems, I left for a reason but they are the low bar that I’m judging the US on and America is losing. Dear America, be better than Russia.

  3. The place that just fired me for not crossing my T’s or dotting my i’s, is like “back to the mines”. They don’t care if you are sick. 3 days sick and you are fired. ppl had to beg for someone to cover their hours so they could go to thier Grandmother’s funural. If they took the day off with out someone taking their hours, one of the three sticks gone. Who cares if your close family member died or if your child is in the hospital.

    If anyone is thinking of getting an alarm system for your home. DON’T GET VIVINT. That is the company I am talking about. DON’T GET VIVINT. THEY SUCK

      If you find a company that actually cares about employees, let me know. The Current place I work at is barely attempting to try. And it’s mostly hogwash. But we’ll see how legit they are.

    It’s not bad enough that almost every aspect of female life is a never-ending string of be nice, be sweet, don’t speak out, if you’re opinionated then people will think your a bitch, so you must “Go Along to Get Along.”
    Don’t say No because you will hurt the little boyz feelings.
    HIS feelings are more important than your feelings.

    Little boyz, on the other-hand, are taught Don’t Take NO for an answer.
    If she says No to you, than there is something wrong with HER.

      1. Yes you were. You might not have been directly taught “don’t take no” but there is a lot in society that teaches boys not to take no for an answer and girls not to give no as an answer, this time it’s just literal.

    2. I don’t think they need to even discuss if this is a progressive or not, not everything needs to be about that. However if it were progressive it would be that no one can say no to anybody asking them to dance, not that girls can’t say no to boys

  7. They’re setting up for a launch on skinny bundle TV platforms. They’re going to take on the major networks in their own ballpark.

    Because of how the FCC regulates TV airways, swearing is very problematic. Each instance of it will be fined, heavily. So they’re being smart and learning to skip it before the change up.

    1. My only beef with this is that it’s possible to broadcast on delay and bleep out the swearing on the platforms that prohibit it, so that’s what they should be doing instead of self-censorship.

    2. I disagree. Aside from the convenience internet based medias (Netflix, Youtube, Hulu) offer consumers as a significant reason for why they are shifting towards the newer services, I’d argue its being able to watch whatever the hell they want. The FCC fixed something that wasn’t broken in the first place when it was ammended to over-regulate media. While film and music have been getting slowly but surely more lax, television is still restricted to some pretty strict rubrics. I think at this time you can use the word “fuck” no more than twice during a tv show season.

      And what has bleeping out the words on adult shows ever really done? kids still would know what is being said. Why can’t grown-ass adults decide what kind of content is fit for their and their familys’ consumption? The success of GoT and other shows and films full of sex and violence show how fucking little FCC rating reflect American sensibilities.

      So yeah, to the end that TYT will commandeer the fleet of other broadcast news medias is a no-brainer. But what good is a ship that’s slowly sinking? And what kind of “victory” is it to that end?

    2. They are broadcasting (live I think) on some new platforms. So, there are probably some terms that prohibit use certain swear/ curse words. I think they’ve mentioned this.

    3. If I had to guess why, I’d bet that Aspiration.com doesn’t want them using ‘foul language’ now that they’re sponsoring TYT.

      1. They were cussing long after Aspiration sponsored them. It was when they started broadcasting unto TV that they started self-censoring. Not saying I know for a fact what the bank’s stance is on profanity, I’m just pointing out the the more logical culprit is the FCC. The most likely explaination is the one that requires the fewest assumptions. While blaming Aspiration would require only one, finding the FCC at fault would require none.

        1. You’re right, that is a better explanation. I have a fairly spotty memory, with no offense intended to Aspiration or TYT or any of my fellow members was intended.

    5. I believe it is the new platform that Katzenberg is creating. TYT will be on that platform and language will be regulated.

      Also if I had to guess I am going to say people at a news organization have more information and knowledge on a subject than some random commentor. “If you read up on it” is one of the more annoying things that people say

  10. This might be a silly question, but do we know that that woman living in Germany is actually taking advantage of their benefits?

    2. Whether or not she is actually using “paid family leave” if she lives in Germany she is in fact taking advantage of the social safety net there. Either in paying less for insurance, having better options for schools for her children, or in any other of the many many ways that Germany helps the people living there

The SDI (disability insurance) payments that I have been living off of for the last year does not come close to actually covering my bills (yay rent in LA) so I had to break down at one point and get food stamps. When it was first processed they allotted me $16 a month – but that was actually a mistake that they quickly fixed – it was actually supposed to just be $15 a month. They cut it off at the first of the year but that amount isn’t really worth the time and energy to fight for.

    This plan they are proposing is cruel and horrifying. I went shopping with a friend who had WIC at the time and this proposed program reminds me of that program structurally. It’s set up in a way where some of the restrictions they have set out seem to encourage waste. Our government is so frustrating.

  18. The federal govt can issue ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY for anything that is ‘physically possible and can be paid for with our currency’. So all this OTHER TALK about how people should pay for parental leave is LUNACY. We have been told lies for DECADES about how federal spending works. As long as we use the LIES as talking points, we are like people driving a car that is now stopped because it is out of gas, and has a spare tank full of gas in the trunk, but we all stand around and wonder if we should give the battery a jump, or change a tire, or get a tow truck. And the liars LAUGH at how they have duped us!!

    Also – the country DOES NOT HAVE A DEBT, it is our NATIONAL SAVINGS ACCOUNT. And the deficit is money that the federal govt PUTS OUT and has not taxed back, so REDUCING it is INSANITY, taking money OUT of the economy. And we DO NOT BORROW from anywhere. All lies.
