Glen Beck commenting on FLOTUS’s dress reminds me of Cenk during Trump’s Inauguration, except Cenk’s obsession over the outfits were complimentary, and he acknowledged that it was ridiculous to be commenting on the the womens’ dresses.
I think other people have pointed this out but it needs to be hammered home until it really sinks in. Yes, Jessica Chastain has been a leading lady and in more blockbusters than Octavia Spencer but that is ALSO part of the problem. Jessica Chastain is a beautiful white lady there are more parts written for her. She is not more or less talented than Spencer, and she is not more or less capable of putting butts in the seat for the movie, she simply has more chances because of her privilege. So yeah you would assume she would get paid more because she has more “selling power” but that is another piece of the puzzle. If Spencer and Chastain were on a equal playing field for the number of roles open to them then for all we know Spencer might be the bigger star.
Which then leads to male vs female. There are more roles in Hollywood for men than women. Many movies come out every year that don’t include women or give women like 10 mins of screen time. You might assume that Pitt should get more than Chastain because Pitt is a bigger star but it’s very likely that he’s only a bigger star because he has more roles open to him.
Who has the most star power is a factor in pay but who has the most star power is part of the broken system. Producers don’t greenlight a lot of films with leading black women, or leading women at all. So the star power argument is not as black and white as even you make it Cenk. Maybe Pitt would still be the top dog but we won’t know that as long as the system is the way it is.
My wife made the exact same point when we were watching!
Look at the photos… Michelle Obama WASN’T even in a dress. I see pants. A dress doesn’t include pants. Am I mistaken? Do you remember our current First Lady’s outfit when going to the hurricane (Texas?)? High heels and all…
The comments on Michelle were actually pretty good for Bill O’Reilly there. They cut just before he dissed Beck for his comments on Michelle. Full text:
Beck: One more thing. The most Marie Antoinette I have ever seen of anything with Michelle Obama. Did you see the dress she was wearing when she went down and toured the oil spill?
O’Reilly: I did not.
Beck: This is good stuff. She looks like — who pulls this dress out of the closet and says ‘you know what I’m going tour the oil…’cause I can relate. It’s designer dress that is all white with black swatches all over it.
O’Reilly: You don’t think she was dressed appropriate for the oil spill?
Beck: I think this is an outrage. Look at the dress!
O’Reilly: Its an outrage?
Beck: Oh its absolutely and outrage!
O’Reilly: I love you. Laura ingraham came on here last night and said that Michelle Obama’s garden is a left wing plot. Now you are saying Michelle Obama’s dress is an outrage?!
Well, while it may be true that Jessica had bigger roles, one may have to ask if black women get access to very big roles as easily and whether or not that is because of “talent” or market forces (Like unless you are a black woman with a certain look like say, Halle Barry, it may harder to land roles, especially big roles in bigger movies). Once you bring color into this conversation, things can get even more complex.
Lol I’m a professional political analyst and I emailed Justice Democrats to offer my help free of charge. The only response I have gotten is fundraising emails. I worked on the Bernie campaign in Nevada and Saikat Chakrabarti and the people who ran the campaign are clueless. They had no idea how to convince anyone of anything, and most efforts by the Bernie campaign amounted to nothing more than a waste of time. I left before the Nevada Primary even happened because I knew that the people running the Bernie campaign were not serious about winning. If Justice Democrats and Our Revolution operate anything like the Bernie campaign, don’t expect any wins.
What advice would you give them?
Do you have maybe a top three of preferred actionable items?
For people planning on getting more involved, it’d probably be good to get a heads up – thanks.
Based on what we know, the staff of Justice Democrats isn’t particularly competent or smart people. Which sucks. It sucks a lot. But… we have to make due with what we have. It’d be better if Cenk was still on the board and the remaining members were collectively smart enough not to have kicked him out (and not to treat you this way), but it’s still not a good idea to give up on justice democrats based on that.
Sign up to volunteer on the Justice Dems website. There is an option to do research for them as part of volunteering. They will get back to you after a few days. From what I have seen as someone who does some research volunteer work, it is decently well run.
The main reason why Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders were able to become popular during their campaigns is because of grassroots AND technology. If anything, what justice democrats need are smart engineers to develop a communications platform that is easy and which can get people together, informed and engaged. Youtube, facebook and twitter are great, but you need logistical planning and agreement across such a huge mass of people.
Probably need some data scientists too.
My guess
Snake filled heads = Medusa
He is really going back to ancient times for his insults to women.
We challenge pay based on gender or race, but TYT still accepts the incredible inequality of the film industry where a few top actors make everything, and the artists and laborers often never make anything realistic for their 14+ hour days.
Yes, I understand people go to the movies to see actors. As such, they should make more. But in an incredibly top-down industry which allows producers to commit sexual abuse and be protected, we’re questioning just the sexual abuse and not the underlying power dynamic that allows abuse of so many different kinds.
I can’t say how many films I worked on where I was asked to do something illegal — work extra hours unpaid, etc. Everyone else would readily agree and bitch in secret. The few times I spoke up, everyone who talked in secret would quickly back away from me, afraid of consequences from the incredibly regressive power structure. Even the most liberal folks I knew totally rationalized an incredibly rightwing industry, and it’s sad to see the Turks also who live in that L.A. bubble.
You wouldn’t accept that folks who worked in the auto industry had to work 14+ hour days or hire “interns” to do actual work, in the hopes that the boss grants you an eventual job.
TYT probably uses interns in an illegal (but unenforced) way, but at least that’s a steady company. A production can roll through town, hire “interns” to do what should be paid PA work, and there’s almost no chance anything out of that. Ooh, they moved cases of water bottles, what a valuable educational experience!
Its about supply and demand. There is a far greater supply of people eager to work in film & tv, not enough jobs to go around. If you don’t want to work unpaid overtime, there are 1000’s of eager, bright young things happy to take your place. Many of them come from wealthier backgrounds and can afford to work unpaid internships, the traditional way for the privileged elites to give each other’s children entry to the biz.
Unionization alleviates many of the problems, but as you probably know, it is hard to get into a Hollywood union.
TYT 16 years! OMG you are getting to old for Roy Moore.
OMG way too much lip service to the Oprah non issue
Fuck Oprah.
There is a rule 404 for that.
Correction: Cenk is the one riding shotgun in hour 2.
Also, “manophobic” is not a word–unless he actually means “afraid of sponges.”
Happy Australia day to all at TYT 8-)
Trump will offer him a bribe, that is why his lawyers want to be there, LMFAO
