  2. Was going through the Dem nays on the amendment to FISA reauthorization, most were the usual suspects – Pelosi, Hoyer, Schiff, Wasserman-Schultz, Sinema types. The one that surprised me was Marcy Kaptur. Hope it’s not getting too cold in North Ohio to exercise proper judgement.

  3. Clean coal has nothing to do with cleaning the coal. All fossil fuel is preprocessed to purify it anyway before combustion.

    One interpretation of ‘clean coal’ is low sulphur coal that produces less of that rotten egg smell when burned, and contributes less sulphuric acid rain. Another interpretation is coal that is low in toxic heavy metals. Clean coal means being choosy about which coal to burn, not cleaning contaminants from the coal. Depending on the mine it may have no clean coal at all.

    In today’s parlance of climate change, ‘clean coal’ is synonymous with carbon sequestration (i.e. the removal of CO2 from flue gases that you described tlcoolO) combined with deep well injection of carbonic acid (carbonated water) for disposal.

    Sequestration works only in the lab where everything is controlled and textbook. Once it is deployed in reality, it has no practical use for mitigating climate change. Pumping carbonic acid into the ground merely acidifies the aquifers and dissolves heavy metals from the crust into the drinking water while potentially poisoning poorly understood subterranean life. It is worse than fracking.

    There is no guarantee the carbon dioxide will stay buried either because this method of sequestration is unnatural and possibly temporary.

    The only known way to neutralize all that carbonic acid is to dump huge quantities of buffer in the ground with the carbonated water, and that buffer needs to be mined from somewhere, plus it will form megatons of carbon compound precipitate and clog up the disposal injection well. It’s a total boondoggle.

    Sequestration is just a fancy name for global Flint, Michigan-style water contamination. Worst idea ever.

    Not only will the carbon persist in the atmosphere for hundreds of years regardless of early attempts to speed up sequestration, but the warming is also increasing the desertification and reducing natural sequestration capacity by killing off live vegetation with drought and wildfires.

    People voted for Trump because they are angry, and they are angry because the economic reality of being one among billions in a finite ecosphere is increasingly desperate when technology concentrates wealth to an unprecedented degree. Things are unlikely to improve in the short term (‘short’ means hundreds of years).

    Humans might never get that carbon back into the ground. This is not millions of years ago. Sequestration is not going to work the same in the modern world as it did in ancient times. There is no going back and there may be no recovery either despite our best efforts to revert. We may already be past a tipping point.

    NYC lawsuit PR play with taxpayers money. They’ll loose. You can’t go after energy cos for decades of socializing costs for climate change, as WE ALL KNEW POLLUTION KILLS and let energy cos do so and don’t force our reps to change that situation annnnndddddd NYC ignores biggest polluters, ie, climate changers – NYC drivers and Con Ed. NYC has done almost NOTHING to reduce car use, such as London has taxing inner city vehicles. NYC even cutting back express bus services, doing subway repairs during daytime operating hours. NYC not protesting Con Ed delaying PV adoption, realistic off peak hours, credit for storing energy….. NOTE Despite all this NYC HAS LOWEST PER CAPTIA ENERGY USE IN NATION pro rated to climate, thanks to best mass transit in country and high density.
    Congress granted Corp rights of humans, Andrew Jackson knew corporations were the death of America, but power structure bent him in the end, it’s been downhill from there.
    Buying EXISTING stock when it’s at lows, such as during cyclical down turns using the dividends generated BLEEDS energy cos. might even cost the prior investor does nothing to make energy co richer though to some extent can borrow “book value”. “guilty profits” can be avoided selling at price purchased – perhaps to a non profit to milk further AND reducing book value.     Anti pollution, Energy Efficiency, and Green Energy all generate more jobs than fossil fuel, steadier jobs, higher tech jobs, better paying jobs, proven in dozens of studies.
    FISA = BAD but DWARFED by GOP law allowing ISPs to sell everything you do on the internet, EVERY KEY STROKE, and while encryption hides some of it, NSA etc have broken most commercial encryption, and under that law, NSA can LEGALLY buy your raw data, crack it, know anything you do online, send online, emails, files, vidoes, web sites, blogs, what I’m doing right now……. Let go of issues that smear GOP and dems and concentrate on stuff that will get GOP thrown out of office – LIKE SELLING INTERNET DATA.
    Constitution is a FLEXIBLE document and perhaps it’s no longer practical to allow protection of privacy of foreigners in US. US citizens yes yet given problems WH officials had getting US end of FISAs revealed back when Trump was saying Obama had full access to com via FISA, maybe it works and just needs more protections – like citizen oversight, which might be useful for ALL govt agencies / key rules….. There’s a debate dems should have as part of these laws, that is their bad.

Cenk, do not assume that Mrs Greitens (actually, Dr, but my fellow Missourians choke anytime women with PhDs use our professional title—people are always a little confused when they meet Dr. Williams and discover that I have boobs) isn’t eager to be in these ads. She’s a professor of political science with big connections. I’m not saying that she wasn’t devastated being cheated on, but don’t assume she’s being coerced into this, either. Her husband didn’t become a political phenom by accident. Furthermore, the Gov was a democrat (as many his fellow Jewish St. Louisans are) until 2015. Apparently, keeping women locked up basements part of the initiation ritual for becoming a Republican. Before running for governor, he ran a large nonprofit. He’s no dummy, but his political ambitions sure did seem correlate with his marriage. He’s a disgrace and, frankly, thank goodness didn’t front his religious background, because it would only stoke horrible racist animus in certain areas of Missouri. I love state, but I gotta keep it real. But for real, this Gov is not a simple story. Dark money, a very public fight with the country’s best State Auditor (Nicole Galloway), an investigation for improper use of text messages, now possible assault and blackmail… He’s the absolute worst.

  8. Clean coal originally meant removing impurities at the mine before shipping. Look at the Wikipeida page for “Coal preparation plant”. Because the coal was formed as a swamp or peat bog deposit, it includes interlayers of rock and various deleterious minerals that add to sulfur in the combustion gas. There are procedures to remove non-combustible components and some of the pyrite (source of sulfur) based on the difference in density and other processes. This is called coal washing. This reduces the ash produced at the location where it is burned, as well as reducing smoke stack scrubbing costs to remove sulfur gases and flyash.

    Later, the concept of clean coal was expanded to include carbon capture at the burning location by retrieving carbon dioxide from the flue gases and sequestering it by some means. This latter can be done, but its costs currently make it impractical except in some cases where there is an actual use for the carbon dioxide rather than simply storing it in a reliable longterm manner. These cases where carbon dioxide can be used have been as part of secondary oil recovery operations in old oil fields and a case in Illinois where it was used in carbonation of beverages. There may be others, these are just the ones I know about.

    1. A few years ago, a spill occurred in West Virginia of a coal prep chemical that caused many municipal water treatment plants downstream to be shut down. There was an issue of food service workers in a school getting sick from offgassing of this in the water, as well as claims some students were affected. This illustrates that coal prep is a common procedure with an infrastructure of vendors supplying the chemicals used in coal washing operations.

  10. Good luck suing big oil for climate change. Even if they knew it contributed but buried the info like big tobacco I don’t see a strong case for putting global warming on them. I’m no fan of fossil fuels either! Everyone who uses anything but green energy is also responsible. Using the car is a benefit, heating the home or apartment in winter is a benefit. Charging the phone is a benefit. We all receive the benefits and We’ve all have had the global warming info for about 30 years at least.

  12. I don’t understand how that many people could believe that coal was ever coming back when we are already heading toward the end of gas. Solar and Wind is getting better every day and gas has been great but it’s old tech. Is the education system in the USA that bad? I feel so bad for those coal miners and their communities. Vote for Progressives, get a job. Vote for a Republican, lose a job to corporate and 1% tax cuts.

Have you watched the clip? She’s laughing as she says it! She’s not back peddling at all??? She just said ‘my one regret is not telling Grassley before I did it’. how’s that a backpeddle?
    Again – I support Alison in the primary race, think Feinstein’s been in office far too long but it’s also silly to focus so much on a dumb quote she gave while giggling.
