I had only started listening to Selena about two years or so before she was killed. I had been taking Spanish for all of Junior High, and continued through High School, but getting Spanish music was pretty hard in Utah (at the time) unless you were already super involved in the small, but growing, Spanish community – who had people from much farther south shipping it up to them.
I was oddly devastated by her death, because I had hoped after high school I could go down and see her, or that she would manage to make it up anywhere remotely near me after she managed to become a crossover artist – which I had no doubt would happen.
Sadly, my copies of her CDs got lifted with the massive case I had that was stolen. I never thought to check iTunes till Grace mentioned it, so I’ll have to get them back that way.
? MWF this was one of the best ones yet. Keep them coming. Binge watching so I’m gonna run out soon.
My uncle was one of her bodyguards. While he wasn’t ‘on duty’ when she was killed, he still lived with depression and guilt for years (bordering on decades) that followed.
Just wanted to comment again that Jason Carter is a great co-host for MWF.
I remember when Selena died. I was 11 and I lived in Corpus Christie, Tx on the Navy Base and I remember being really sad, but uncertain about things. I was so young and I don’t remember much, but watching this episode brings it all back. This is the only episode i’ve ever watched of MWF and it’s because it’s about Selena. My dad was in the Navy so of course I moved fairly soon after this in ’96, but I remember being shocked that no one where I moved had even heard of Selena, let alone knew anything about her death. It is interesting to learn about all of the details since i was so young and I can’t imagine my parents would have let me know too much about what happened. It’s a really great episode and very respectfully done. I think Jason added so much.
The music is crazy lol
Grace makes the Jerry connection at 43:15. Thanks, great mwf.
I’ve made these suggestions before to no avail, but you should REALLY look into two particular murders that are WAY more interesting than this one (although, you guys did a great job as usual). But PLEASE check out these two, because I guarantee that they will make for a memorable and haunting episodes of MWF. They will need a full episode.
1. Sylvia Likens (some of the perpetrators are STILL alive)
2. Kitty Genovese
Both of these murders have profound societal implications and are amazing stories.
The Sylvia Likens story was made into a VERY disturbing movie – An American Crime. Creeped me out for months!
Trust me, CHECK THESE OUT :)
“More Interesting”? It’s all interesting no murder is more interesting then another dude
This story always reminds me of the anime movie Perfect Blue which is extremely similar. Watch it
I’m wondering why, by 1995, these folks hadn’t seen or heard of All About Eve. Plus weren’t there other crazed fan incidents in the news at that time and before? How does a record label NOT protect its rising star with mandatory bodyguards? Messing up with accountants is one thing but letting a sure thing go out without protection? Smells like more of a problem with Selena’s contracted label execs, any bias / racism to be found there?
You can’t expect a person new to that industry or the family to know everything about handling fame. Yes artists make dangerous mistakes sometimes but something’s mighty fishy about how far Yolanda got.
Crazed fans have been causing trouble all over the world for centuries, nothing new to record labels.
This was a super interesting MWF , i feel bad for not knowing anything about Selena i was raised on metal music so i dont know anything about this music genre but i will need to look into her stuff so sad.
Love when Jason is on!!
Or basically anyone from poptrigger
I LOVE Selena. I am glad you covered this.
Here in Texas, especially here in Houston and most of the state south of us, we all still remember the death of Selena. And yes in ’95 until her tragic death and was completing her as yet unfinished English-Crossover album from whence the “I Could Fall In Love” song that rocketed to the top of the charts came from. Selena wasn’t just a great singer, she had dance moves and choreography skills that KICKED MAJOR ASS too! More than that she was a visionary clothing designer as well, and most importantly she was and always is in our hearts an AMAZING WOMAN AND PERSON. She always had time for each and every fan eager for a photo (before the age of selfies!) or an autograph. She put a lot of her wealth, before she even got really rich, toward helping the community here in Houston and all of South Texas and Mexico too. She never forgot her roots. She was never fake or just going through the motions – she was truly an angel given human form for so many people. Despite her death, her courage and love and huge heart will live on in the entire generation of young girls that followed her because Selena had proven to them that you could achieve any dream and yet maintain your authenticity as a person while doing it. Please do look up her work and videos on YouTube- I’m a Caucasian fan myself so this is not just me saying it. I’ve had the joy to work with and know many latina women of all walks of life who ALL still remember and love her. As long as we remember her and see her example, she will never truly be gone!
grunge is dead…rip kurt
there is a Plastic Surgeon from Mexico, Selena was seeing, her marriage was on the rocks, Read Selena’s Secret by Maria Celeste Arraras.
Great job as always. Please say O.J. Simpson’s trial will be done?
Grace, you and Jason Carter have such an engaging chemistry together. I hope for many more conversations in the future. I throughly enjoyed listening to you both.
I definitely agree. Jason brought so much to this episode. His passion for Selena and her music really added to the story-telling. He’s a wonderful guest and I hope to see him again very soon.
I agree too… Jason and Grace seem to get along very well… the conversation flows nicely.
The picture you guys used for this episode is NOT of Selena Quintanilla! It’s of YouTuber/beauty guru Desi Perkins! It’s a picture from her Selena-inspired makeup tutorial. Might want to fix that lol.
Hero
It should be fixed now!
