Can’t believe John stopped watching DS9 just as it was getting good. DS9 is an amazing ride and you go along an amazing journey with those characters. Garak really made DS9 for me, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more interesting character in all of TV nowadays.
Great post game guys but I have just one thing to add: Babylon 5. Imagine LotR in space. Just watch the intro sequence of season 1 and tell me you’re not intrigued. You won’t regret it.
Wow, Cenk really doesn’t like Brian Unger so much that he stopped watching Always Sunny when Brian Unger’s character debuted. Hilarious, because 3 years ago when Brian Unger was hosting the TYT Main Show, he speculated (jokingly) that Cenk must not like him because Cenk is never there when he is.

Know what magnuskn? It’s all in the name. That’s how Hollywood and their big corporate sponsors have always reduced the importance / quality of a production. By titleing it in a way that codefies it into a niche / ethnic category. They ‘ethnic-size’ it and put it outside the norm with a different name.
And that’s exactly where DS9 remains. To this day for my friends around the world as well as for me. Outside Star Trek.
Know what pissed the confederates and the cigarette-happy alcohol obsessed Mad Men back in 1966? The fact that a major sponsored show had a ‘normal’ name like Lost in Space and The Munsters yet didn’t have all white non- communist people in command. Once that name was established, it took them over 15 years to build on it, so they decided to do that by white maleing and changing the name of anything not so.
Over half the point is in the name. If I’m going to go outside Star Trek I’m going WAY out to Red Dwarf.
Deep space nine: Duet is the best 45 minutes of TV ever completely ripped from a play but still breathtaking
Best post game in a while!!!!
My personal order of preference.
TNG, Voyager, DS9, Discovery, TOS, Enterprise.
DS9 best Star Trek.
But I’m more of a Babylon 5 man myself.
Do not watch Za’ha’dum, or you will die.
better > worse
DS9 > TNG > Yoyager > Enterprise > Discovery > TOS
Sisko > Picard > Janeway > Archer > Kirk (don’t know about Lorca)
actually 3 circles
DS9, TNG > Voyager, Enterprise > Discovery, TOS
Sisko, Picard > Janeway, Archer > Kirk, Lorca
DS9 / B. L. Sisko haters can keep their hate.
Garak, Dukat, Martok, Gowron, Nog, Sisko’s dad
“You see, it’s all true!” – “Even the lies?” – “Especially the lies!”,
“I never tell the truth, you see, I don’t believe there is such a thing, truth is in the eye of the beholder!”
Ohh do I love this show..!
Data from “Next Generation” is the best character on TV. He exudes the innocence of a child since he’s an android that is new and learning the world. He tries to understand emotion, culture, and the world with sound logic. On top of his humble, logical, and intellectual qualities… he’s an android that is powerful. There are other characters that later on have followed in his footsteps, but not as great as Data.

I don’t think Cenk gets to call John “King of the Dorks!” anymore after this episode. Just sayin’.
I can’t believe DS9 was so far down that list!
TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise and original.
If yesterday was as nerdy as today I’ll have to go watch.
Deep Space Nine is the best Star Trek show ever made. Discovery may come close, we’ll see soon. That John doesn’t like DS9 that much but likes Discovery is quite strange, given that they both have a very dark tone for Star Trek.
Cenk, is tv in Turkey delayed? Star Trek was only on from ’66 to ’69.
As far as Heidi is concerned, have either of you ever read the classics? John being as learned as he is surprises me that he never read Heidi.
They showed Star Trek in Germany first in the 70’s, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all that it also got shown later in Turkey.
What’s better, Original or Next Generation?… Stargate SG-1
You actually meant to say “Babylon 5”, of course. :p
I was at one of the the 10th anniversary celebrations of Star Trek back in 1976, held at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Philadelphia, PA. George Takei was there, so was my hero Nichelle Nichols. I loved her so much I was too afraid to go in the room where she was speaking and get her autograph. I was 15 years old. My mom thought I was nuts going alone but that’s how much I loved Star Trek. What I didn’t realize at the time was how great an influence Lieutenant Uhura was on me and other black girls growing up then. I also had no idea it was another woman I loved, Lucille Ball, who gave Star Trek the chance no one else would in those Mad Men days. I only knew I loved everything each story had to say to me in spite of the corny bits. Gene Roddenberry was my idol.
Mom ended up loving that show too, along with my sisters. Then Roddenberry died and our long awaited The Next Generation came along. We were all SOOOO DISGUSTED.
Here’s why.
Yes, I understand about the story being more profound. Yes I get it about Picard, that’s my MAIN man Patrick Steward from my back-in-the-day beloved ‘I, Claudius’ fame, he is super. But do YOU get it about taking the black woman in her natural state OFF the bridge and putting a blinded black man and another Klingon masked one up there instead? They put a balding older white guy in charge with an even whiter robot and some white women on that bridge and that’s what Gene fought for? I don’t think so. Took out the Japan, Russia reps. Putting the black woman behind a bar counter giving sage advice is that ‘negro house slave’ slash ‘black nanny’ dynamic I have had SOOO much trouble with in my life.
Not to mention all the ‘aliened-up’ white guys on other planets. TNG ended up WAY whiter than the original, I say partly because Gene died before production got underway and mostly because Hollywood wanted its white Weinstein way, like it still does now.
That casting alienated me, my family and lots of my friends from TNG. I can’t be interested in a story that takes me out of command positions.
I switched to the British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, the first and to this day ONLY sci-fi series to feature a young black man in his natural state in locks (like Jayar) at the helm of a star-ship, another black man second in command and a dead, hologramatic white guy crew member who is a total buffoon. How about THAT combination? Super story line, lots of great writing, won some awards. OF COOOOUUURRSE Hollywood tried to ‘Norman Lear’ it, made the US pilot all white so it failed from the git-go. Red Dwarf is now in it’s 12th season going strong in the UK.
Yep I went to one of those conventions too, back in 2006 in Peterborough near Leeds in England. Great meeting that cast.
Deep Space Nine: Never gave it a chance. Why? It needs to START with the title Star Trek. Sheesh, it’s like Hollywood execs are soooo afraid of putting anybody not Superman/Aquaman in anything with name recognition.
Kim Horcher on Nerd Alert talked about Star Trek Discovery last year, I got a Netflix account JUST for that and BAYAM. Got way too busy to watch fresh episodes. But I’m happy, this looks to be the Star Trek sequel I’ve always wished for. Too bad mom and one of my sisters couldn’t be alive to see this and appreciate this wonderful world of on-demand viewing. I’ll watch it over the winter holidays.
Honestly, man? You didn’t give Deep Space Nine a chance because of its stupid title? The show is excellent and has the best Star Trek captain of the entire franchise, who is a black man. I know that nerds like us get pissy about the smallest details which deviate from out head-canon, but if you are looking for a good representation of black people, I think DS9 would satisfy you (the first 2 1/2 seasons are pretty “eh”, though… the show gets so much better later on).
Voyager, Next Gen, TOS, DS9, Enterprise
the amount of commentors saying the glorified soap opera that is DS9 is their favorite is too damn high!
I have to confiscate Johnny Pie’s dork badge. DS9 is clearly the best of the bunch. The range of characters is way too cool.
the only thing great about DS9 are the ferengi … maybe even Odo… but in the later series even that is a reach. Then the worst: o’brien’s judgemental ass and commander sisqo.
always sunny is an amazing show and im not just saying that because im from philly.
WRONG!!!! DS9 is waaaay above Voyager and Enterprise!
YOU SIR ARE VERY MUCH CORRECT!
Seconded and thirded! ST:TNG was my favourite growing up but watching DS9 through as a box set showed it had a fantastic arc and holds up well against shows like B5.
Agreed! I loved all of the shows but I would definitely put DS9 in the top 3. The DS9 crew were interesting and more like real people who knew how to have fun, as opposed to the more stiff and proper Next Gen crew.
The Episode Name Cenk is looking for here is “Patterns of Force.” For what it’s worth I think the most valuable Star Trek TOS episode for our current situation is “A Taste of Armagddon.” Best TNG episodes, “Chain of Command.”
Heidi milked GOATS, not cows!
I need to know if Cenk knew who killed Laura Palmer by the end of the first episode…
