Grace Baldridge is joined by Amir Nikoui to talk about the North Hollywood shootout: an armed confrontation between two heavily armed and armored bank robbers and members of the Los Angeles Police Department on February 28, 1997.
Is there any reason for having guns with those giant bullets available to civilians in peace times? I will never understand the American obsession with firearms and reluctance or outright refusal for gun regulations. It is unique amongst developed nations.
This happened in the tail end of my sophomore year, I was 15, and I remember seeing it on the news. It was terrifying. Actually all of the news that was current news of the time that Amir mentioned, I remember and I agree that Columbine was one of my worst memories of that era as far as news goes.
Hey, just a quick correction. Police weren’t using .380 in their revolvers, that is a concealed carry type semi-auto, “rebated rim,” pistol cartridge. They were using either .38 Special or .357 Magnum, which are larger “rimmed” cartridges a few over to the right of the 9mm (in the chart you showed). Often they used the same pistol (S&W Model 27 or similar) for either cartridge, as they were similar dimensions and a pistol designed to support the more powerful Magnum can definitely support the lesser-powered Special.
TYT Network should really get a firearms expert back in their ranks for consultation. I often cringe a little when you guys start talking guns. I love your work and I know you can’t get all fields of specialization covered with expertise, but since we’re so awash in guns here in America, it would really help to deliver accurate information. In the case of MWF, it’s not critical, but on the main show and TYT Politics it’s pretty critical.
Thank you for the new episode! I really love this show and love that this one is almost an hour long. It’s great to get really deep into a subject, and you do it so well. I am curious about the Amish School Shooting that happened in 2006. I think it would make a good topic for your new season. Here’s a link to the Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Nickel_Mines_School_shooting
Have you done the Oakland County Child Murders? Michigan in 1970s
I grew up blocks away from where the children were picked up.
As a young kid when they were happening and I remember parents being in a panic to let kids go alone anywhere.
And in the 1970s, kids basically went out to play wherever and had to be home by dinner.
Yeah, I agree. There was no murder at all. And no, suicide isn’t murder. I mean I guess it’s a dark side of history? Seems pretty minor though compared to what other things there are to cover.
Grace kicks ass! I just love her. She’s so sweet and funny and intelligent too and I love watching her and hearing from her. As a transwoman I am extra happy Grace is at TYT because she’s a great example and role-model for the whole LGBTQ community and all of us. **Hugs** for Grace and everyone here! =) PS- Amir you kick ass too!
The term Amir was looking for is naiveté. Not innocence, but a certain gullibility in their unpreparedness like “oh this is new”. In Canada some police forces are begging for training and access to high powered carbines, nowhere near how militarised the police in the US is and there have been situations (Justin boutique shooting etc) where cops were just targeted and shot one by one, some through their cars and windshields. We obviously have super tight gun regulations and it’s near damn impossible to obtain a pistol or handgun of any sort, let alone these war weapons but sometimes there are situations where cops need more powerful guns. Because yeah, there will always be illicit guns in circulation through the black market BUT what American politicians don’t seem to understand is when you ban these guns and take them out of the hands of the general population, you also make it way more difficult to get new ones into the country (they’d have to be smuggled from Mexico or by sea cause obvs Canada doesn’t have any) AND you’d also be banning some of this terrifying ammunition – so even if you get yourself one of these illegal guns you’re gonna have a hard time loading it, and if you gonna find ammo – your supply will be limited. Basic laws of supply & demand lead to the conclusion that these illegal guns and bullets would cost A LOT so whoever manages to acquire them is going to have no choice but to use them sparingly, which ultimately puts an end to this whole nightmare of unloading thousands of rounds within a few minutes.
Couple that with severe restrictions on types of guns, gun storage and gun transportation (like you can have guns but you sure as fuck can’t keep them loaded and you’re not transporting them anywhere loaded) then you’ve got a pretty good system where people aren’t just stockpiling themselves a military base.
Whilst I get what you are saying, as I am sure many others do, Americans love guns and the right to bear arms is just too ingrained in our psyche. However, we need to reduce, to regulate, to make it much harder to get big assault rifles esp , tighten how long it takes to get one and clear for one, etc. Amir is right that Congress didn’t budge for this or for our children, they just love that money too much… So wolf PAC, as Cenk might say. Let’s get politicians to vote from their brains not their wallets. I bet we’ll see big changes once we get money out of politics.
Great episode! I distinctly remember watching this unfold on TV while doing laundry on my day off. It was 5 days after I turned 23, and 4 days after my daughter turned 2. It was terrifying. Imagine what would have happened if Congress had acted then. That’s just what my mind keeps going back to. What if we had taken legislative action instead of militarizing the police. Our country might be a lot better off.
Anyhoo, thanks for another great episode! You guys are hitting it out of the park with each episode, and I continue to be amazed.
Love this hour long episode. So much more discussion for the last segment, which always ends up being my favourite part of MWF.
Like Grace, I hadn’t heard of this story. It literally seems like a rejected heist mission for GTA5. It’s interesting to look back to the police force situation of the 90’s and compare it to today, and I appreciate Amir mention his reaction to Columbine, which was also my major introduction (I was 11) to extreme violence. Just to look at what’s changed in the last 20 years is a little bit terrifying, especially in the light of the Vegas shooting.
I live in Canada, but I do often wonder now just how much higher my chances of dying get just by crossing the border.
I suspect I’m as old as Amir’s parents, or close to that. The movie “HEAT” inspired this and other crimes, I remember when it occurred, thinking, “Holy shit, this is ‘HEAT'” …. Someone tell Amir and Grace!

Can we get a gif of Grace going “AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!” XD

all of this sounds so burn after reading
No murder on this weeks Murder With Friends…
They used 38 special not 380 auto, it’s amazing that you got the information wrong when you had the correct info elsewhere in the graph.

I second this
I’ve been slippin for missing “Murder With Friends” – thank goodness for the holiday tv lull

Also, Grace and Amir, I am always excited when you make another episode, keep up the good work! And thank you., I too like the longer ones.
I love the longer, almost an hour, episode!
Love Grace & Amir together … original hosts … MORE, please!
A couple quibbles.
This is NOT really a Murder with Friends episode. This is a failed bank heist.
No serial killer, no gruesome scenes, no found unknown bodies, no nothing that constitutes “Murder.”
There’s suicide, but there isn’t even the covering up or hiding of a crime.
Yeah, I agree. There was no murder at all. And no, suicide isn’t murder. I mean I guess it’s a dark side of history? Seems pretty minor though compared to what other things there are to cover.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Murder with Friends!
Grace is fantastic, and MORE Amir, please.
Just not a murder/serial killer episode ;)

The FIRST thing I thought of. Thanks for bringing this up. And I’m a freaking ‘millennial’ (on the older side, but still…) Heat is badass
yay! new episode and its almost a full hour! :D
