In The Young Turks Hour 2 - On Demand by Tom28 Comments

Hannah Cranston, Mark Thompson, and Ava Hill. The Texas shooter’s domestic abuse history, and a discussion of gun rights. Fox News says the best place to get shot is at church. The pastor of the church preaches his on carrying guns. Viral-photo-cyclist fired from her job for flipping off Trump’s motorcade. Rand Paul was assaulted by his neighbor. More allegations come out against Kevin Spacey. An Egyptian lawyer suggest women with ripped jeans should raped.

  1. Hannah says, “when is enough, enough? When is it that enough people have died, that you can [should] give up your rights?”

Hannah, dear Hannah. The answer is very simple. Never. We should never voluntarily give up any more of our rights.

Yes, I said any *more* of our rights.

Year by year, decade by decade, legislation silently and covertly gets passed that slowly erodes the rights designed for us by the founding fathers of our country. Rights to privacy, rights to fair trials, rights to speech, rights to assemble, and on and on…

We must cling to every right we have, because when we loosen our grip, even for a second, another right slips away from us…never to return.

Rights are all we have as citizens. We need to fight for every last one of them.

    ALWAYS.

  2. at the Last Story Segments, my reply is Lookup Jordan B Peterson. His explanation destroys Feminists/Misogynists.

  3. I’m sorry, i’m sure hannah is a very nice, intelligent person but PLEASE PLEASE don’t have her lead the hour. I can hardly watch her hours and there’s just no way I would feel comfortable sharing them.

There’s a lot of things that bother me about her commentary in general but I really feel her presentation could be greatly improved with a few simple pointers. Seems like there should be plenty of people at tyt who could help.

Even just cutting out the duckface and that condescending snarky tone she takes with the people behind the screen she disagrees with would make her exponentially more watchable

  4. I started this string with my reservations about Hannah’s style. Some others have their own observations. This is not to suggest she is no good at presenting.

I am casting around for a better explanation for may reservation. I remembered that in the past she has been characterised as a ‘Valley Girl’. I have looked up a definition for that expression and do not believe it is fair.

What I suggest is that Hannah is trying to be too nice and to win over the audience by being winsome (or cute to some). That may work on Think Tank but is not in my opinion appropriate for the main news shows.

I am not a Hannah hater. I just feel she could be much more effective on the main shows. Perhaps she should watch Anna or Nomiki and talk them and others as to how she might modify her style.

I am not trying to be negative and fully recognise the comment elsewhere that hosting a live show mainly from memory (without cue cards or auto-cue) is challenging.

  5. Ava added an incomplete thought to the first discussion, followed by interrupting Hannah and Mark for the rest of the hour to try and sound like their ideas were hers. Not a very good contributer.

  6. Please don’t put Ava on again until she learns to be respectful if her co-hosts. She kept talking over especially Hannah but also Mark, not letting either finish their thoughts. This let to Hannah talking a mile a minute to get her point across without being cut off. If there were valuable points made, I missed through sheer frustration over the disregard Ava showed and the chaos that ensued.
I generally don’t think that Hannah is a bad host, I just think that her style has grown to exaggerated and gossipy for TYT. The way she presents her opinion doesn’t seem genuine anymore. I am sad about that, 1 or 2 years ago she seemed to make progress and improve and I was rooting for her to grow into reporting on politics, but I think that chance may have passed now…

    1. Agreed, nothing against her personally but as a talk show host I find her extremely obnoxious, although I know she’s popular among others.

  7. Ava gets the Gossip Award (not a treasure). “It has to be political” on the Rand Paul assault? Projection on political hostility? Come on. News & opinion, sure. But are we asserting things like Fox does now? Mark gets a Save By Joking Award by joking after that it must be an affair. Hanna gets the Rational Management of Allegations & Moving On Award, “we don’t know”.

On the Spacey allegations though, no awards. I know you have to cover it. I know it shows you’re not just polutucally attacking, Fox people & Fox in general but ‘we don’t know’ should be the cap off on that also. No matter how many allege. The culture of conviction by allegation in the Court of Public Opinion is extremely dangerous & must be opposed, no matter how guilty a person seems based on what people say. That’s how nooses, guillotines, & gas chambers happen on a long enough timeline.

The Borg chant about powerful men being brought down ‘one by one’ speaks volumes here. As bad as it looks. Consequences based on allegations is not a good shift in this culture. That’s a shift AWAY from Justice based on evidence toward vengeance based on narrative & allegation & rumor. In the context of doxxing & propaganda from extremists on the Right & Left, this is NOT good.

    Please. More news. Less gossip.

  8. Disagree with Ava Hill pretty strongly about keeping a safe space on Facebook. That’s what makes you a troll. Facebook is a harmful thing just in itself, even if you’re honest. How many personalities is enough to get away with what you’re saying? If you need a safe space on Facebook, then just browse it for pictures of your family and friends, and it’s even bad for that. Facebook is the worst invention of mankind. Same for other “social media” platforms.

  9. Aright now that I’ve watched the whole hour 2, Ava was seriously interrupting and talking over Hannah (and mark some) the entire time. Maybe some of it was nerves or not being good on camera, but that’s not what it seems like. She seems like the kind of person who is always cutting in the middle of your sentence to try to say the exact same thing, like they want to be the ones to say it. Because it’s not like the person is talking too slow and they need to finish the thought to hurry them up. It’s like they just want to seem like they knew it better and want to be the ones to say it. Trying to have a conversation with a person like that is unbelievably annoying. It seems like she’s like that, I hate to talk down on her but that’s what it seems like and it made the whole hour annoying as hell when she is literally just interrupting and talking over other people the whole time, not just mistakenly once or twice, but basically intentionally to be the one who said it first, because that’s just the way those types of people are, and it absolutely ruins a show like this making it annoying as hell. So Ava seriously needs to understand that if she wants to be on the show, she needs to let the other person finish a sentence, even if it means they get to be the one to say it. Sometimes it’s okay to wait till they’re done talking, and then say, you’re right, I feel the same way, even if you have to repeat a bit of it also, at least you’re not interrupting and talking over the person and coming across as rude and impatient and inconsiderate and unprofessional. Be patient and she’ll contribute to a much better show.

  10. Will add my name to those who like Hannah. I’m not a follower of Think Tank because it’s too pop culture for me but when she’s on the main show, Hannah is professional and does an awesome job.

  11. I will never understand the hate Hannah gets.
Shes very intelligent, educated, & well spoken…. always well informed on the subjects being discussed, & super passionate about her beliefs… &, If I remember correctly, she has been very involved in researching the stories for the main show for a very long time.
These hosts are not reading from a script….. Id put Hannahs ability to carry a show, off the top of her head mind you, up against anyone criticizing her… & 90% of the people you see on tv that would be considered “professionals” by Hannahs critics.

  12. Just want to show support for Hannah Cranston since there seems to be so much hate on her. She’s great. Get off her nutz. Go Hannah! Go mark! Go tyt! Keep doing good work and dig deep so we can get as many corrupt pricks the fuck out of the positions of power we need honest people in, so they’ll fight for the people, not the super rich who are powerful and set for life already. Fuck those evil cunts, let’s fix the system to get the people what we deserve.

  13. I agree that she is not my favorite, the only thing that really bothers me is how she breathes through her mouth like she’s gasping for air. I do appreciate having her on however as it brings diversity of perceptions and opinions to the show.

As for talking together, I think it’s appropriate because it’s a panel and they are discussing opinions and topics. If they were doing that while actually telling the news it would be annoying, but they are fine to me. It seems like Hannah cuts Ava off a lot but if Ava is okay with it it’s not a problem.

  14. Sometimes I, too, think that the moderators are a bit lightheaded for the Internet’s premier news show. But I don’t know if that’s just me; after all, but both the ladies could be my grandchildren (Mark would more likely be my oldest child). Maybe this is how millennials like their news presented, but I am more “old school”.

On the content, am I way off base for thinking that the original Rapp charge about Kevin Spacey ought not to have been publicized? Whether it happened or not, I think the better way for Rapp to have handled it would have been to contact Spacey directly first, and give him a chance to apologize.

    1. He did not want an apology.
He wanted to continue the domino effect of men (and women) coming out against their perpetrators. In fact, all Spacey’s apology did was smear the entire gay community.

It does not matter what you want. It matters what the victims want. So, yes, you are way off base and irrelevant.

    2. Should other criminals be treated in that same matter? If you steal from someone, would it be cool if the only consequence to the thief was to apologize to their victim? And it’s up to the victim to give a chance to the thief to apologize? Why should they listen to some bullshit apology from the person who wronged them?

  15. I have always found Hannah’s style a little troubling. A more ‘sober’ (in a non alcoholic sense) would be more effective.

Having made that observation the show was effective except also that there was too much of Hannah and Ava talking at the same time. That was distracting.

TYT should adopt a standard that cross talking is avoided by all on the panel.

    Discuss

    1. I am not a huge fan of Hannah either. Her presentation is not professional enough for me to take seriously but I trust TYT would only put her on if she had validly earned the spot so I tolerate her.

    2. I couldn’t agree more her commentary is also generally shallow and her voice gets irritating to me at least especially when she is trying to be coy or humorous and she goes up a few more octaves
