Grace Baldridge is joined by MWF editors, Elle and Cassie to discuss the unsolved murders of the Grimes sisters. The sisters had walked to their local movie theater to watch Elvis Presley’s Love Me Tender for the 14th time and never returned. Thinking they were inspired by the movie to make it in the big city, local authorities treated the case as teenage runaways. One month later, their naked bodies were found. They discuss the three potential suspects and why they were ruled out. What were the connections between the murders of the Grimes sisters and the murder of Bonnie Leigh Scott? Was it possibly the same killer? Will this case ever be solved?

I would almost bet that whoever actually committed the murders was somehow related to someone in the police force or was in an otherwise higher-up position. I say that because someone in an important position might have the influence to sway reporters for the local paper which would explain the way that it was covered initially and it might also explain all of these accounts of the girls showing up many miles away in Tennessee. It would also explain the in-fighting with the corner’s office. So I would say Charles Markowitz might either be the killer or perhaps that investigator used him to cover for someone else in the case of all three murders, including the one he went to jail for. Was there a reason given for why he only did eleven years? It might explain that as well. I mean…knocking almost ninety years off of a sentence is not the norm. To me, it is more likely that he was talked into taking the rap for the murder and the actual murderer was either in the mob or in the police force.
Great job on the voice-overs Amir!
I renewed my membership when I saw you were back :)
love this show. glad you guys are back <3
You’re back! Since you will soon be doing a Jack the Ripper episode, I am suggesting an Amelia Dyer episode. Though she is not well known, she is believed to possibility be the most prolific British serial killer known so far with an estimated victim count of between 200 to 400+.
It helps your total when your victims are babies who are delivered to you with cash to spend and clothing to pawn.
In the Victorian era, Mrs. Dyer would advertise baby adoption services to desperate women. Though she was caught once, she was sentenced to only 6 months hard labor for neglect. The experience taught her to kill the babies immediately instead of starving them to death, which she was able to do for the next 14+ years. Considering how busy Mrs. Dyer was the week before she was caught, coupled with the limited contraception options and job opportunities for women in Regency/Victorian England, I am always surprized the estimates are so low.
As women’s healthcare options are changing, I do not think we will go back to that…..but I think it would be good to know how bad things have been.
I believe there will be a Jack the Ripper episode soon, so I am suggesting an ‘Angel Maker’
What Juneau_Nana said makes TOTAL sense.
SO grateful to Steve Jobs and the kind of technology that lets us hear from someone on the ball like Juneau_Nana. Keep it up girl
Keep talking to us like that from Alaska
We’re right over here the world over talking with you
??????????
Welcome back Grace! Sorry about the word brace! Voice typing what can you say!
Welcome back brace! I’m glad you enjoyed Alaska is been my lifelong home.
As far as who I believe a suspect will be and I don’t think I would be too far off the mark but it’s a police officer and he and Chuck were team.
Chuck basically is the lure and the cop possibly well-connected is the perpetrator it would explain why chuck only served 11 years.
It would be interesting to go back and see who was at a parole hearing for Charles and see if you had any police officer family members .
Anyone who obviously was in law-enforcement enough to get him out of 99 years down to 11.
Considering what his sentencing would’ve been 99 years with without possibility of parole? For the other girls murder to be similar, him not passing polygraph and his voice being recognized by the Mom.
Getting out early even back then you’re looking at at least spending half of the sentencing time or third of the time would have to be spent in jail before parole consideration.
So the only people who have that kind of power and pull to allow him out of prison that early would have to be a judge on the recommendation of who?
Sorry I’m really old and I’m very tired and I use voice activated typing program as I am a quadriplegic. So I hope I am making sense.
But I remember hearing about the girls many many many moons ago when we were visiting the lower 48 and my brother was born in Detroit.
there was an older woman who rented us a home and she told my mother to make sure that us children stayed close because of the Detroit riots.
She stayed for coffee and told my mother awful stories About children being abducted & killed and how she had moved from Chicago and that’s where I heard the Grimme story.
Sitting on the steps outside on the porch it was hard not to use drop when you’re bored kid. I never like that lady she smelled funny and I’m sure that’s what young kids say about this old woman. Ha ha Ha ha ha. Mom lady smells funny ha ha ha ha
Sadly I don’t think after this much time in history has gone by they will ever know, unless they’re tearing a old house down and find some news paper cut outs something like a shoe box of memorabilia from the murders that would tie it all together it would be an accidental finding before would be an active find.
REALLY glad the show is back!
As for cold cases, age is no longer an excuse. We know who Jack the Ripper was now. Yes it takes a HUGE amount of money to get to the bottom of these, and yes there are family members, friends or witnesses who have died refusing to speak out or live still refusing to cooperate. But if there are determined people with funding I believe, just like in that case over 130 years ago, the killers can be found.
I think it’s extremely important to gradually but determinedly open and solve these cold cases. People considering following the murderous ways of their sicko ‘heroes’ should be made aware that even their own death will not release them in the memories of the living for all future generations. It’s worth every penny to un-cold these cases.
…we know who Jack the Ripper was??
Yes bullfrog21, we do, thanks to the brilliant research of Russell Edwards, his magnificent team of DNA experts and timing — there was only a single opportunity to get it right. The hard work and sheer luck that (soundboard please) ???GOT ‘IM???????????is detailed in Edwards’ book Naming Jack the Ripper (2014).
To my knowledge, the book and the investigation done are not conclusive and flawed
No we do not
Guys you should look up Luis Alfredo Garavito Cubillos, also known as La Bestia or Tribilín is a Colombian rapist and serial killer. In 1999, he admitted to the rape, torture and murder of 147 young boys
Howdy Grace…Great SHOW()s! I bet the killer was familiar to them…neighbor, family friend, a person who knew about the families situation…perhaps a girlfriends father, uncle ,or relative relative.? They had an older sister…maybe that is the key. Not much on the bodies as far as marks…2 hostages, how do you control them and keep them quiet? There could have been 2 killers? Were there any other deaths besides the sisters and the other gal? Back then ,I doubt they were running away; and those times were not kind to single women with children…people may have blamed the family circumstances, and running away as being an obvious progression to being raised w/out a father. You have set yourself up w/endless material…the world is full of Cold Cases. Have Fun.
Murder With Friends is back!:D Love this show and love the host, Grace! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE look up Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend Caril Fugate. Many movies are based of his killing spree including “Natural Born Killers” its a very interesting story and he’s notorious in my hometown of Lincoln NE. I’ve actually been to his grave (during Halloween) in Lincoln, which is bit of a tradition for all of us who grew up in that area.
Since they were killed so soon after their last witnessed meal, it didn’t really matter that they were treated as runaways after being reported missing. It’s bad that they were but at least it didn’t make a difference in this case. I also think the killer offered them a ride, killed them somewhere else and then dumped the bodies. Obviously they didn’t die of exposure because their bodies were found lying on top of each other in a strange position. That’s not how they would end up of their own accord, naked no less. It was probably the same guy who killed the other girl since she was dumped so close to the sisters. Killers often have familiar “hunting grounds” and “dumping grounds.” If there was still DNA evidence available then at least he could be ruled in or out but beyond that I think it stays a closed case.
Yes, it does. Had it been treated differently from the get-go it is more likely that they would have gotten better suspects and even caught the person. The assumption in your comment is that survival is the only thing that would have been of benefit for the cops handling the case correctly. It is very likely they would have still died, and even somewhat likely that the person got away. However, it could have drastically altered the outcome especially in terms of catching the person who did it. To this day many cases of “runaways” that are actually murders don’t get solved because of the amount of time between disappearance and treating it like a murder. It was a problem then and a problem now
How far was the body site from the theater?
I think they said 15 miles.
They said that bodies were found 15 miles from their home, but they were last seen at the theater, which was some distance from the home. It would help to know if they were found in some random direction from each.
I love Grace and I love this show. But my girl you need to take a breath once in a while and let others talk. I think in this episode you talked a lot more than usual despite having two other guests. Also some of the description was quite repetitive. Maybe do the show with people you feel more comfortable with and let them talk a little more.
Again love you and love this show.
I’m not a fan of unsolved crimes so this episode was disappointing. That being said let me be clear that I freaking love the show. If you are still taking suggestions, and want to delve into a case that is truly disturbing, take a look at Leonard Lake and Charles Ng.
I just want to say I am so glad the show is back. I am always impressed with how much effort you all put into the show and how much you care and know about the cases. I love this show. It’s always fun to see which cases you guys choose, and even in unsolved cases you manage to make the show very satisfying in that you cover all the angles and theories really well. I look forward to it every week. Keep it up!
Great second show of the second season
