In 2013, the creator of the GIF won a Webby Lifetime Achievement Award. His “thank you” speech was “It’s pronounced JIF, not GIF.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBtKxsuGvko
The GIF was created in 1987, but didn’t become the big Internet sensation that we all use for communicating until far more recently, so the younger generation who are newer to the GIF tend to pronounce it differently (and technically, wrong) than the peeps who were around when it was created. But now, both pronunciations are considered acceptable. Sort of like the pronunciation of “data.”
Grace, you should DEFINITELY do a MWF on this! Jeffrey Dahmer as well :)
Our “territories” are an arcane colonial throwback, thus 2nd class treatment of the citizens & their governments. Time to stop the colonial treatment & make them a state or give them independence. We did it for Cuba & the Philippines.
actually, we counldnt control, Philippines so we had to break away before the cost of Civil War becomes negative for our Military presence in SouthEast Asia. Cuba gained independence without being part of U.S. Territories. soo yah u might want to revise ur U.S. history.
I can’t believe this argument is still used. Nowhere does it say that an acronym has to be pronounced by its individual words. I assume you also pronounce jpeg as ‘jay-feg’ since the p stands for photographic
GIF is pronounced with a hard G.
Remember what it stands for: Graphics Interchange Format.
“Graphics” is not pronounced as “giraffe-ics”.
The GIF creator said it was pronounced with a hard G. Like a parent naming a child, the creator’s pronunciation is the right one despite grammatical rules.
Oops. Ignore me. Creator said “JIF” as noted below. I’m a derp.
Like i said in past comments in youtube. We need to reform our U.S. Territory Insular Laws to have uniformity with our Territories…..each territory(Currently) r given unequal citizenship, which isnt same as being American Citizenship. I prefer to give Permanent Residency status for all Territories IF the found work or are studying in U.S. Also we dont need U.S. shipping corp if we got American Military that can mobilize to deliver AID. We should send our Troops to secure the island.
Regarding 18:15-24:49
The only reason y this happened isn’t because of “Protest” by Change in Management and Yemeni Civil War is stressing Saudis. Women werent allowed to drive under previous King, The Current King is reforming any laws that dont fit in his rule. Also Women(in Saudi Arabia) r Allowed to do the what Ana claims they can’t do watch this LINK!!!:

Yeah I still think he’s wrong.
Real quick regarding French Guiana: It’s not a country. It never was. It does exist and is a department of France.
Unfortunately the creators of words seldom maintain control of their pronunciation. Language is more fluid than that. The creator does not control. This is a good thing.
http://howtoreallypronouncegif.com/
It is pronounced Jif. The creator says it’s to be pronounced like the Peanut Butter.
it’s pronounced “GIF” not “JIF” because that’s how people say it. Words are pronounced how people pronounce them, no matter how much the creator stomps his feet about it.
So, just because some people pronounce something incorrectly doesn’t make it so. Do you intentionally pronounce another person’s name incorrectly even after they tell you the correct way to pronounce it?
NO! Grace! Fake News! The creator pronounces it with a soft g like ‘jif’ since the marketing campaign for it made allusions to Jif the peanut butter.
you must immediately retract this fake news!
you’re still awesome though….. I forgive you. Am I not merciful.
I always felt people who were in the know (including the creator) pronounced it with a soft ‘g’ (like a tragic giant aged giraffe on a gigantic religious rampage.) Then people who didn’t know any better came along and pronounced it with a hard G, decades after it was created.
Also even more English experts reamed out the other English experts for being idiots for thinking that English has hard and fast rules without any exceptions, and especially for not knowing the difference between soft and hard g’s.
Whew!!!
Finally THE Question has been answered.
“Murder With Friends” is back October 11th.
Can’t come soon enough, cuz I luv me some Serial Killer with my morning coffee,
My comment ‘Thank you for the additional information’. Relates to the comments of tlcool0.
Unfortunately although I pressed the reply icon my comments were not included below those of tlcool0. This failure has occurred more than once and it us very annoying.
Oh great Grace is in ths hour, I am skipping the second hour today then.
Good Riddance!
Oh really I just clicked on the story that she obviously wanted/argued to be on hour 2, the cannibal story and then disgustingly and disrespectfully to the victims of this couple talks about all the details, because it isn’t just sick and murder-porn it also has no fucking news value on TYT. But hey I wanted to hear about news stories that don’t get covered or not covered accurately not want to watch part of her morbid, victim exploitative show ‘murder with sick-fucks that get a thrill off others suffering’.
Why?
Hosam’s comments about Ana’s alternative facts are I think correct.
I have not been to Saudi Arabia but some years ago a work colleague said that under the abaya women are usually colourfully dressed and that the abayas are not worn inside the home.
Regretably it seems that Ana spoke without any specific knowledge and it may have been more appropriate to have commented that ‘That as I understand it etc etc’.
Thank you for the additional information. This item was not handled very well on the show. Someone at TYT should review this so lessons are learnt for the future
I recall an article from a few decades ago. American flag ships have to meet certain conditions concerning safety, crew pay, and other regulations. Many ships were changed to foreign flags to avoid these more expensive operating requirements. The Jones Act would provide an umbrella to protect American flag ships from such competition. Doing away with it is similar to allowing people to buy insurance from other states (race to the bottom on regulations). My impression is that the Jones Act is also similar to “prevailing wage” laws to protect unions. Doing away with it might be the equivalent of “right-to-work” laws.
My comments above are based on my recollection of a decades old article. I do not know anything about the Jones Act and the current state of differences in requirements on ships based on their flag of registry. Please at least look into this. In emergencies, a waiver might be justified. For long-term, elimination of the Jones Act should be evaluated by considering all aspects of the issue, including whether this is a “right-to-work” law.
Question: Can Donald Bleeding Hemorrhoid Trump legally issue an Executive Order that affects Health Care? If so, then taxpayers paid for another Republican charade that could have been effected much earlier, without the subsequent anxiety and embarrassment that ensued. This is a question that should have been raised in your commentary.
The creator has said that it was a Jif and then everyone with knowledge of linguistics and English came forward and called him a moron. The g in gif is for graphic which is pronounced with a “g” not a “j” so Jif makes no sense. He’s actually been told to his face various times and to various degrees of harshness that he clearly does not understand language (I mean sometimes people have been down right mean about it).
So despite his “jif” I will always call it “gif” because that’s the way that language works. I don’t jive jifts every christmas I give gifts. I don’t use jraphics interchange format I just graphics interchange format.
the way an acronym is pronounced does not follow the pronunciation of each word…. otherwise jpeg would be pronounced ‘jay-feg’ since the ‘p’ stands for photographic.
linguisitically, ‘gi’ is used in words with both hard and soft g’s. so, although you don’t give ‘jifts’, you do speak gibberish when you use these arguments.
Lol. PassablePoliticist, that was funny.
Quality not quantity. Watching the clock seems so petty. Who says the news should take the same amount of time every day? Who says more effort goes into a 45-minute show than a 35-minute show? Maybe Grace put the second hour story list together and overestimated the time those stories would take. Cut them some slack. It’s the best news available on any media.
They have other shows on this network and people have other places they need to be. Going over happens frequently so if they say it’s not possible there is most likely a reason it’s not possible
Steve Wilhite, creator of the format, gave a five-word acceptance speech at the 2013 Webby Awards, where he was given a lifetime achievement award:
It’s pronounced “”Jif” Not “Gif”
And then was immediately called a moron by people with english and linguistic degrees
exactly, Jonathan_1…
and actually, if we follow the notoriously inconsistent English language rules, it could be either pronunciation; the following bunch of mixed words show that both pronunciations of ”gi…” are correct:
gill, gin, giant, girls, gibe (pronounced jibe), gibberish, gibbon, giblets, giddy, gift, gig, gigantic, giggle, gigolo, Gilbert, gilded, gilet, gilt, gimlet, gimmick, gimp, ginger, gingham, gingiva, ginko, giraffe, girdle, girth, gist, gismo, give….and that’s not counting any number of words with both pronunciations that we have appropriated from other languages…
in addition, the following is copied and pasted from the Webster’s Dictionary showing both pronunciations of GIF are correct:
”The Graphics Interchange Format (better known by its acronym GIF /ˈdʒɪf/ JIF or /ˈɡɪf/ GHIF) is a bitmap image format that was developed by US-based software writer Steve Wilhite while working at the bulletin board service (BBS) provider CompuServe on June 15, 1987[1] and…”
you’re awfully salty for someone who’s wrong
Its not that Puerto Rico is brown or poor, its that it is a territory and not a state. Territories do not have Senators and are not part of the electoral college. Its a sad reality of politics.
With regards to Saudi Arabia, probably the biggest change since the government made women’s education compulsory in the 70’s. Will probably lead to a domino effect on other issues.
Ana just repeated a bunch of alternative facts though. They need to differentiate between what is a custom and what is a law. Women covering their head or face is a custom and not law (if you lived here you would know this). Black robes (abaya) are required by law. They don’t have to eat with their face cover on, but they choose too.
Having common projects is what holds couple together… So start eating people today !
A 35 minutes second “hour” When Cenk is away the kids will play.
the 2 hour is not usually an hour even when Cenk is there because I’ve often wondered why it wasn’t an hour. their 1st hour is usually longer then an hour so maybe it averages out
it’s closer to an hour if you’re watch live because of the breaks, which to be fair any TV news show would also have.
Every 2nd hour vid has people complaining “hurr durr its not a full hour” but no show that’s slotted to air for an hour ever is, the standard is 44 minutes. Aside from that, I’ll gladly take a shortened 2nd hour (fluff) it if means a longer first hour (serious)
GIF = Jraphics Interchange Format. Argument settled. It’s JIF
GIF vs JIF
There is an entire article about this on CNN, where the creator of the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) says how to pronounce it correctly.
**drumroll** …Grace had it backwards. It’s pronounced JIF, not GIF, though there is a strong argument for saying GIF & GIF has already won the pronunciation war anyway (IMO)
(source): According to the creator, Steve Wilhite, in the CNN article titled “It’s settled! Creator tells us how to pronounce ‘GIF'”
By Doug Gross, CNN, Updated 2111 GMT, May 22, 2013
( edition.cnn.com/2013/05/22/tech/web/pronounce-gif/index.html )
There is actually an entire webpage dedicated to this subject. The creator did originally call it “jif” with a soft g, however Oxnard Dictionary says the grammatically correct way to pronounce it is “gif” with a hard g. People use both pronounciations, and both are acceptable http://howtoreallypronouncegif.com/
Choosy designers choose “JIF”!
