  1. re: a drop in population numbers being a problem? FYI: Human population is too high and is a big contributor to climate change regardless of how technology attempts to reduce carbon emissions.

    A dropping population is GOOD for the planet. The problem is an economy that is driven by population growth.

    Let’s address that: what kind of economy is sustainable without overpopulation of human beings?

  2. Re DeVos. There is a good chance that the young sons of elite donors are getting caught by increased enforcement. Normally if there is an issue, they donate more money and make things go away. This makes it harder to do that. It’s *incredibly* difficult to hold students accountable criminally, but there are actions that can be taken on campus that could address cases that are clear but don’t hold up to criminal charges.

    If the current guidelines aren’t working, fix them, don’t dump them.

  3. I live in Tokyo, and Ana is right it’s a loose translation. I would say the expression “daijoubu” means “it’s all good” or “that’s fine” or “no worries.” It’s used in a response to a question like “is it okay if I_____ ?” The word “daijoubu” translates to “yeah it’s fine.”

  6. I saw Devos’ speech originally and thought it seemed mostly reasonable, surprisingly. Then I heard your guys’ breakdown of what it actually does. Thanks for correcting the main stream’s media weak reporting, where very few of them report on what is actually being done and are instead being misled by what is being said.

    Also I kinda wondered if some of the Hillary ‘supporters’ were actually trolls paid to insult Sanders. I’ve met more than a few Hillary supporters who bought into the anti-Sanders propaganda.

    I feel like if Obama signed an executive order banning the eating of puppies and kittens for breakfast, the Trump administration would have it reversed immediately.

    Gotta be fair to the those who were eating puppies & kittens for Lunch or Dinner, and were mistaken for people who eat puppies & kittens at breakfast. Fair is fair!

  9. I have to disagree with Ana.

    There are rape apologists. And the Trump administration, and much of the religious Right, is supportive of them.

    And it doesn’t mean they are all pro-rape (although some are), for the record.

    For people who grow up with immense sex- and gender-based shame issues, be it from secular or religious culture, find it very difficult to deal with the thought of rape, because it triggers those feelings of shame. This makes people want to believe that rape almost never happens, and that viewpoint is propagated by their local institutions – football teams, frats, churches, schools, and of course the rapists themselves.

    What I’m saying is that there is a constituency for the alt-right “war on boys” trope that Betsy DeVoss is acting from, and it’s a LOT bigger than just the people who are rapists or sexual harassers.
    Doesn’t mean they’re right. But it’s vitally important that we recognize that this is a real thing that real people are dealing with, and it’s fueling gender- and race-based far-right identity and hatred.

    (Also, we’d do the world a favour by improving the mental health opportunities available to these people *before* they find themselves in far-right extremist groups.)

Meddling is what states do. Remember Operation Condor, South Amerca? We do. I feel strong solidarity for the working people in the USA, our struggle against injustice is the same,struggle but what if Hillary got cheated? Who cares! if everyone would have voted for Jill Stein the political landscape would have been another and there would be some hope in the world. As for now there is no garantie Hillary Clinton woldn’t have started some kind of war with North Korea, just to show Bill she also wears pants.

  16. As a rape survivor I find what Betsy devos is doing is a crime against other victims of sexual abuse and I think that colleges should still do what the Obama administration whited them to do in that letter

  18. Even as a male I am very happy to live in a civilized country like Canada. A quick search online found six clinics in the city that will perform an abortion (one even notes it there all female staff). Even better, it is all covered by the provincial health program.
