    1. forget Forget Paris — it’s awful ! there’s as much chemistry between Debra Winger and Billy Krystal as there is between Billy Crystal and Bill Kristol.

  1. Great post game as always when Ben and Brett are involved and was great to see John back from north of the wall.

Funny a story of wedding dates. My cousin hates to be the center of attention (we’re similar like that) so the year she got married it was her big 30, and her husbands 35th… funny part is they were born on the same day 5 years apart so to never forget their anniversary and have all the big events rolled into one they got married on their birthday.. so soon it will be their 5 year married, her 35 and his 40 all one one day with only one giant party not 3, everyone wins lol

  2. I don’t tend to care for “of all time” lists for anything because I think it’s so hard to compare things over time. Like I get they are all comedies but comparing Gold Rush, Some Like it Hot, Blazing Saddles, CaddyShack, and The Big Lebowski is kind of difficult. Movies are so influenced by what is going on in the world in so many different ways that genres shift and change. Just my two cents

  3. It is interesting going through the comments and being reminded how subjective comedy is. People like what they like and there is nothing wrong with that, but it is interesting. There are some great lists. A couple of my favorites that I haven’t seen mentioned:

Young Frankenstein (personally my favorite Brooks movie)
A League of Their Own (one I would think would be popular with a lib audience)
    The original Bad News Bears
    Sleeper
Some Like it Hot (one of the best movies EVER in my opinion)
Selectively Marx brothers movies. Some hold up. Groucho is really funny.
    The Odd Couple

For the record I am 27, my dad took me to a lot of old movies at the old Castro theater when I was a kid.

  4. Oh my god… I laughed so hard when Cenk said his parents took him to see the Omen as his first movie.. bc MY parents took me to a drive-in at the age of FIVE(!!) to see THE SHINNING!! I still cannot watch that movie even now!! I thought I was the only one whose parents were nuts!! ?

  5. My Intro to Film Professor is so happy for me to somewhere, she loves bringing this up:

There is a history from the first movies to ever to be played in theaters of everyone in theater flinching from a train headed towards the camera.

One of the first films ever to be played in theaters was just a train arriving and then departing from a station, and everyone was super scared when the train was departing because they thought it was going to hit them (this is in the early 20th century or the late 19th century).

  6. Brett, my proposal involved stopping to pee first, too. Except he didn’t do the peeing, and it was a stick, not a wall. ?
We went to the courthouse & got married on his birthday so he could duck out of birthday stuff. It’s proven a surprisingly effective strategy ever since {11 years this past June}. ? Congrats & best wishes for you two.

Oh, and while his birthday isn’t 4/20, mine is.

  7. I don’t mean this to sound weird or bitchy, but …

Is the man always the one to propose?
I never hear any where the woman proposes and it’s a happy, good thing?

I dated this guy for almost a year and my Mom really liked him.
She said, “When are you two going to stop playing house and get serious?”
I thought this was funny and I told him what she said.
He responded with, “Okay, I’m ready. Pick a date.” We were married 1 year after our first date.

Twenty-five years later, when asked how he proposed, he says he never did. My Mom did all the proposing.

  8. Harold and Maude, Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Princess Bride, Anchorman, 40 yr old Virgin, Bridesmaid, Blazing Saddles, The Hangover, The Holy Grail, The Pink Panther.

  9. Cenk, As a classic film lover AND member of TYT, please don’t say Ben is ” forced to watch old movies”. Classic film is full of the history of American life in the 20th century and these films are truly worthwhile?

  10. No FERRIS BUELLER? Really? And I think Cenk might have been speaking about Red Skelton. His humor transcended spoken language. My Italian parents LOVED him.

  11. We got married on Sept. 11th last year. It’s just a day. As much as people freak out, you have to remember every day of the year something bad has happened in history. Not only that but if you were planning a big wedding most venues are cheaper on Sept. 11th because of the fact so many people freak out. So good for you Brett. On a side note, it’s also great to make sure we remember what day we got married. Oh and get used to people making faces and acting like you spit in their face of their god when you tell them the day you got married or asking “Did you know it was on Sept 11th?” People are idiots. Like “No. We have been planning for over a year and some how we missed the fact that it was on that day…… dumbass.”

  12. 1. Groundhog Day
    2. Hot Fuzz
    3. Blazing Saddles
    4. Ghostbusters
    5. The Royal Tenebaums
    6. Thank You For Smoking
    7. Clue
    8. Dr. Strangelove
    9. Clerks
    10. The 40-Year-Old Virgin
    11. Tropic Thunder
    12. Raising Arizona
    13. The Princess Bride
    14. Blues Brothers
    15. Life of Brian
    16. Annie Hall
    17. Caddyshack
    18. Big Trouble in Little China
    19. The Jerk
    20. Chicken Run

Also, totally disagree with Cenk that modern comedy has out-matched old stuff. We still haven’t beat the 80’s. Here’s a video that sums up how the editing and shots in visual comedy has gotten really lazy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FOzD4Sfgag.

    1. Holy shit, how old are you? I always feel old as dirt around here since I’m 52.

Every one of those movies is Fan-fuckin-tastic!
I am annoying in how often I use movie quotes that no one around me knows … many on your list …
      Except you missed …

      Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
      Shaun of the Dead
      Stripes (first half ONLY)
      The Grand Budapest Hotel
      Duck Soup
      Day at the Races
This is Spinal Tap (Best in Show, etc)
      Young Frankenstein (Blazing Saddles)

Ben’s old school list is almost terrific … Bringing up Baby, Dinner at eight ….

My new movies … Spy …
Cenk, I think your talking about Love & Death

Omg, Brett … “Don’t speak! Don’t Speak … let us have this moment …”

  13. Someone must have read my comment on a previous Old School detailing the ingredients required for a perfect Old School episode because this was 10/10!!!

Ben and Cenk, please do a GoT review!!!

  14. Cenk, John, Brett and Ben great Old School session! You haven’t had a funny one in a while. I love your childhood stories.

  15. did cenk say their deal was with Jeffrey Katzenberg??????????? thats amazing, I’ve workedat Dreamworks a bit and am a huge admirer of his, and this just makes me respect him so much more.

  16. you and Raymond Ben, that episode where he was on a sports TV show and couldn’t say “asterisk” . “everybody love raymond”

  17. Can y’all guys come over and just hang out? “My people” are scattered all over and I miss this casual funny stuff so much!

  18. RE: Comedies: Might add, “Scary Movie,” “La Cage aux Folles,” “Ghostbusters.” An obscure one is, “Mon Oncle” by Jacques Tati. And a subtle one is, “Kind Hearts and Coronets.”

      1. Likewise, “Le Jouet” was very funny while, “The Toy,” did not get great reviews. “Le Grand Blond avec Une Chaussure Noire,” was also hysterical, but I never saw the remake, “The Tall Blond Man with One Red Shoe.”

        1. DonalF i agree ”Le Grand Blond avec une Chaussure Noire” was probably one of the funniest movies i have ever seen. i was hoping it would be mentioned, but being foreign, probably not…

  19. Bahahaha “Hitler’s Tulip.” There should be a movie about this ;)

Super enjoyable start to a 3-day weekend.

    Thanks guys!

  20. Its Confirmed John been dating women, he has his LA nerdy girlfriend and is getting laid with his female counterpart at the North.

  21. Ben: “Would you like me to tell you what your problem is?”
    Cenk: “Yes. Yes I would.”

This one is pure gold. What a great show!

  22. Someone has to say it, as much as I love John and Brett, and I do, they SHOULD NOT be on old school!!! Both are great on the main show but don’t fit the old school format. It becomes to many people trying to out do each other…

    1. Meh. This one is totally their show where they can let their balls relax. I don’t care who is on it, I’m just happy a camera is on.

It would be neat to get Jesus, Jayar, and Ana on here all at once for a whole episode though. Or get Jill Pike back. Gina would be lovely as well. She said she was interested on twitter. Desi would be great for a visit as well.

Keeping it real, I’d like to see Nomi, Ryan Grim, Jordan, and Emma do something like old school but maybe 2 or 3 hours where they just talk about what tthey’ve been doing and what they’ve seen behind the scenes since doing this, what they like, where they want to take it. Shit like that. We helped hire them and I really want to know how things are going and see that they’re happy with things. I want to know if they like us. Plus I think it would be fascinating just to hear Nomi and Grim talk about consultants and the democrats in general in beehind the scenes stuff that doesn’t get news coverage. Like, is the tide actually changing behind the scenes?

      1. I too would love to see a show with Nomi, Grim, Jordan, and Emma, just not on Old School!! There is a reason Ana, John, and Brett hadn’t ever been on old until recently. It’s not because they aren’t good, its because Old School is a throw back to Ben and Cenks old radio show, where it was ONLY Ben and Cenk as hosts. Occasionally you had Wes, Jesus, Jayar, Mark, Shore, and Jimmy on but thats it.

Bringing these other guests on doesn’t make it unwatchable, it just makes it a different show and NOT Old School. Long time viewers like myself miss the Air America days and need our Old School fix!!!!

  23. Here is my (very German) list nobody cares about.

    1. Life of Brian
    2. Airplane!
    3. Lover Come Back
    4. Dr. Strangelove
    5. Jo
    6. The Apartment
    7. * *M*A*S*H*
    8. Beverly Hills Cop
    9. Anchorman
    10. Burn after reading

    1. If it was Harold Lloyd that’d be great, he is one of my favorites despite how racist he was as an individual. He did some wild pratfalls but the stunts were incredible, especially in Safety Last, the one he did on the then tallest building in LA. That film would be in my top 20 if I had a particular order beyond my top two.

My personal top is The Holy Grail. NI !!!! Followed by Blues Busters with Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall and the Bowery Boys. Nearly any of the 47 Bowery Boys films is my go-to when I feel down or need to build up my confidence.

Beyond these I have no particular order since I love so many equally.

Reminder: We just lost Jerry Lewis, a REALLY funny guy. His films weren’t very noteworthy but HE was. Lewis was also a take no prisoners businessman who survived what the Three Stooges and many other Jewish comedians could not in the bad old days of hiding who you were and getting blackmailed / blackballed by the ones who knew who you were. He lived to see Donald Trump become POTUS, I wonder if he was conscious enough in his last years to say what HE thought about that piece of orange skunk shit.
