In The Young Turks Hour 2 - On Demand by ldebruin83 Comments

Joss Whedon’s wife calls him hypocrite. Naval ship collision. Trump travel depletes Secret Service funds. “CEO of Purple Drank” sentenced to 30 years. Drug traffickers are using drones. Man stabbed for having “Nazi” haircut.

Comments

  1. Don’t know if anyone pointed it out yet, but that haircut where I live (Olympia, Washington) is called a “high-and-tight” and mandated for those in the Army Rangers. And you shouldn’t discriminate against folks who might be Army Rangers either. I ended up dating a guy just out of the Rangers a long time ago–tried to convince him it wouldn’t work since I was more of a hippie chick, but he turned out to be a great guy, it worked long enough, and he’s quite the progressive now.

  2. I’m in agreement with Megan Pearson on the Whedon divorce story, I think TYT shouldn’t have covered it on the main show (Nerd Alert or Pop Trigger would’ve been more appropriate), and should have covered it differently. Except I have a somewhat harsher view of Whedon.
Cheating on his wife isn’t what makes Whedon anti-feminist. It’s shit in his movies, like in Age of Ultron, where he reduced one of the female leads to a passive damsel in distress (completely out of step with the rest of the franchise), and added a rape joke that no one (except him) thought was funny (I’m referring to the “prima nocte” thing). The leaked WW script, which was completely vile from start to finish, is what makes Whedon a misogynist , not his infidelity.

  3. Hello ?

This is the Checklist created by Robert D. Hare. Apparently, if you score 75% or above, you are considered a psychopath. ?

    – Glibness/superficial charm
    – Grandiose sense of self-worth
    – Pathological lying
    – Cunning/manipulative
    – Lack of remorse or guilt
    – Shallow affect (genuine emotion is short-lived and egocentric)
    – Callousness; lack of empathy
    – Failure to accept responsibility for own actions
    – Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom
    – Parasitic lifestyle
    – Poor behavioral control
    – Lack of realistic long-term goals
    – Impulsivity
    – Irresponsibility
    – Juvenile delinquency
    – Early behavior problems
    – Revocation of conditional release
    – Promiscuous sexual behavior
    – Many short-term marital relationships
    – Criminal versatility

  4. An interesting conversation, to be sure. Are we meant to be monogamous? Not all of us. If you aren’t, don’t enter into a relationship with an understanding of monogamy; that’s misrepresentation. It causes harm to others.

Can a man be a feminist and cheat? Maybe. However, cheating can be, might be, a sign that the man sees women as objects for sexual gratification rather than equal, feeling people. So maybe the answer is…sometimes yes, but not always.

  5. Regarding burglaries for the purple drank, I have beef with Anna’s complete demonization of the weapons here. He wasn’t a violent offender, as far as we know, and I know for a fact that those weapons are not illegal in Florida. I own half of them (1). Note that charge is for the drugs, not the weapons. They’d throw weapons charge in a heartbeat, if true, and mention it, such as if they were modified to fully-autos. She doesn’t even know styrofoam (which is not actually styrofoam now-a-days) and solo cups, I don’t know what to think anymore. Cenk is right about everything regarding that. Also, I am aware that possession of the weapons in conjunction with the drugs is illegal. The weapons in themselves are perfectly normal for any Florida household, no joke. Love y’all.

  6. You left out a significant detail from the feminism and Whedon story.
The wife’s essay starts with “He always had a lot of female friends, but he told me it was because his mother raised him as a feminist, so he just liked women better. He said he admired and respected females, he didn’t lust after them.”

    1. The wife is wrong to be making this public. There is no hypocrisy here, just sexual infidelity. All break-ups are painful. It is worse when either partner tries to drag in friends or family or, in this case, the whole world.

If we were all judged based on what we said to avoid admitting sexual infidelity… Oi, vey.

None of this changes the fact that BUFFY remains an epic feminist tale that has positively shaped the self-image of millions of little girls. Kudos to Whedon.

      1. I agree this story is not journalism.
I just wanted to point out that, if the hosts were determined to have a debate, get the facts of the argument right – the wife’s thesis was not that he claimed he was faithful to her because he is a feminist, but that he claimed feminism as an excuse for being around other women – ie: be it resolved “relax honey, I’m a feminist, that’s why I love women” not “relax honey, I’m a feminist, that’s why I would never cheat on you”

        1. Not a big deal, and not worth arguing about, as we’re probably 98% on the same page. That said… while I can of course sympathize with the wife’s pain, she belittles herself by making this story public. Break-ups suck, worse than vampires. All she is telling us is that Joss is as creative in telling lies to cover up infidelity as he is creative in writing great scripts.

Infidelity is its own creature, a universe unto itself. It is pointless to say that one’s infidelity-covering-up lies are “hypocritical” — as if the lie were somehow worse than the physical betrayal. The loins stirred with lust, and infidelity resulted. It happens. Some of us are more creative than others when explaining the situation. Joss is clearly among the more creative. And, in true BUFFY style, the lies he told were fairly wickedly funny, if you think about it.

My sympathies go to them both. I hope for both their sakes that she drops the public hearings.

        2. PS – if the issue is that the TYT hosts presented the facts of the story incorrectly… That happens all too often.

At least in this case, the fates of nations were not involved.

  7. why are you fucking over long time viewers that can’t afford membership with this asinine ‘overtime’ feature? what the fuck is that venture capital money for? why the fuck are you fucking over poor people? why the fuck do I even watch this shit anymore

    1. They aren’t giving you less content, only more. Technically the main show is 2 hours, everything else would be bonus and I’d say having it for members only is the right way to do it. Membership is only $10 a month, and it helps support the show. Sure they got capital recently, but they want to ensure being a member is enticing because that is still how they want to receive support overall and in the long run. Their goal would be to gain more paying members to allow them to do more constantly, instead of just when they are able to find major funding.

    1. and I doubt we need to drag either through the mud to tell him he is a moron for believing that his infidelity makes him a ‘victim’ of the patriarchy. Although, it would seem his use of the position is what muddied the whole thing in the first place so she may have a fair point about pointing him out as a confused misogynist?

      1. Nonsense. This unhappy story holds no relevance to anything other than being an interestingly creative entry under the category “Things people say to avoid admitting infidelity.”

  8. Promethazine and Dextromethorphan (the drugs in cough syrup) are horrible drugs. Tried ’em. You don’t want any part of it. Trust me

  9. The first story: “Joss Whedon’s wife calls him hypocrite.”
I’m not sorry this first story was fucking bullshit. Was not intresting or worthy of time on the min show. This is crazy! Why the fuck did we not get a update on Yemon or any other real issue in the world? Flint? Fucking the IDC in NYC voting with the GOP?

I don’t think I am overreacting. What some fucking douche bag celebs getting divorsed and hiswife called him a hypercrite for calling himself a feminist…what? This is dog shit.

    1. I swear the second hour always fucking sucking because of these pathetic storys. Hey Ana this isn’t a personal blog, it’s a news show. So why do I constantly have to listen to your fucking personal shit “Oh Cenk is not paying me enough”, I love my stupid dog and boyfriend every member is sick off. Oh and btw If you can’t shutup about your pay live on the mainshow fucking quit, because guess what when you are always digging and passive-aggressively mentioning your aleged low pay. It is embassing an you are trying to shame Cenk. Instead, if you don’t like it go work for some boring establishment local news show because I am sick of your whining. You have no idea how easy a life you have. For half a life I’d throw the rest away.

  10. This doesn’t remove his contributions to feminism (which is more than just in cinema from what I understand) nor does it make him not a feminist. We also don’t know how much of what his ex wife said is true or not. As far as Dollhouse. Well, Echo is the main character and becomes increasingly stronger and more powerful as the show progressed. It also didn’t get a full run of the story, just two rushed season because Fox. That is why he is considered a feminist cinematography wise. Most of his female character are strong, mostly independent (sometimes a person needs help and isn’t always a male that helps), and flawed so as to be at least somewhat relatable.

    1. I’d rather not get into a back and forth but simply putting a woman in a lead and then making her able to fight does not make her a “strong female character”. He relies heavily on very anti-feminist tropes and personality traits deemed “female and negative”. Most of his women when analyzed beyond “oh hey she can fight” are actually pretty problematic or at least have glaring traits that are not good. It’s been pointed out by many critics on several occasions. Again I don’t dislike Whedon and in comparison to some, he’s slightly better. I have a problem with him propping himself up as a feminist and propping up characters that are really not “strong female characters”

  11. I sort of ranted about this on Twitter but 140 characters makes it tough.

I don’t think TYT should have covered the Whedon story. It’s a lot of angry mud slinging and I wish people would stop paying attention to stories like that. I get it sells but it’s not good for anyone. If TYT wanted to have a real discussion about whether or not he’s a feminist (spoiler alert he’s not and it has nothing to do with cheating on his wife) I would have been into that. Instead, you took what has been a rather polarizing debate among the nerd community and boiled it down to “does cheating make someone, not a feminist”. TYT is better than that and the question of his role as a self-proclaimed feminist has a lot more sides than that.

Despite my feelings on him being a feminist (again he’s not) I don’t hate Whedon and would even concede I am somewhat of a fan. I think his blaming patriarchy for his cheating is right along with some other bs he’s said but really honestly I don’t care. He hurt his wife and that sucks for her but it’s just a mess and people shouldn’t feed it. She should have kept it private and since she can’t do that then the media should have stepped up and done so.

    1. IMO anyone who enters into, or remains in, a sexual relationship on false pretense of monogamy is having non-consensual sex and open to all sorts of criticism, including accusations of hypocrisy on any social issues the person may be active in.

That was the main takeaway from this story but TYT missed it by going overboard with the ‘everybody is non-monogamous’ liberal talking point. OK, monogamous, non-manogamous, fine, do you boo, just make sure everybody in the relationship is on the same page so there are no surprise bastards, dramz, and STDs in the mix that were never consented to.

      1. TYT was not the only ones going overboard in defense of TYT. I still don’t think they should have covered the story and I still think it’s bs to boil down his entire character and what it means to his feminism to this point… but TYT is hardly the only media outlet of doing so

      2. I would also hesitate to call cheating to mean people are having non-consensual sex. You are opening a hell of a door with that and it’s one that I (and probably most people) have no intention of going through

        1. If a person has stated that they are monogamous and they are not monogamous, they are bringing extraneous factors into the sexual relationship that could prove not only disruptive to domestic harmony and damaging to reputations, but also possibly sickening or even lethal.

It may not be criminalized as rape, but it is still non-consensual sex. The injured party never consented to the risk and was fraudulently reassured there was none.

  12. Might I make a suggestion? I LOVE the idea of Overtime, 10/10 on board. However, since it’s not live and you tack it on to the episode maybe make it a separate thing? I watch live and I came back to watch OT and it was kind of a pain to find out where it started. If not make it separate maybe just put in the episode summary a time stamp of when OT starts? I am sure that’s extra work, but it is extra work to edit OT onto the main episode anywhere so there might be a way to make it all mesh. Just a thought

    1. They could also just trim the fat off the stories too and finish on time… but that requires discipline.

Curbing the cannabis use a little might help cut down on the ranting and babbling some but it will not fix the problem. They need a production manager who is ruthless with the stop watch and they need to be more succinct in the pre-game planning so they hit the high points early in the story instead of burying them in chit-chat five minutes later. They really gab way too much.

I know Cenk wants to avoid any appearance of censorship but there are practical realities at work. The team should agree on guidelines for what they will, and will not, spend time on, as part of a quality improvement effort.

I find myself skipping the live show now so I can fast-forward through the chaff. Hearing the same old progressive ‘talking points’ regurgitated on every cop-on-black shooting etc. gets old quickly, especially when they become the bulk of the story.

If I miss a show entirely, I also find myself watching the shorter clips on YouTube days later when they release them, because they edit out some of the random tangents and verbal diarrhea. Yes some of the funnier moments get edited out, but not many, so as long as there is no ‘time penalty’ to waiting I prefer the free clips.

      1. Who arrrrrrre you? 8^/

“Curbing the cannabis use a little might help cut down on the ranting and babbling some”: You might want to start taking your own advice deary

  13. Regarding the white supremicist getting kicked out of school… as a (public) university educator, I don’t think he should have been kicked out of the university based on hat we have seen. I love how peer pressure is taking care of some of these, as Taylor posted.

HOWEVER, we do not know what else may be in this student’s conduct folder already, nor has it been reported what type of code of ethics students agree to to attend the university. My cynical view is that they booted him to protect money coming to their school, but there may be other factors.

    1. Oh, and regarding revocation of the degree. The policy we wrote only allows that if there was some sort of cheating or manipulation to obtain the degree. An earned degree is just that, earned, and i should not be revoked. There are all sorts of legal implications when trying to revoke an earned degree.

The question I find interesting is the revocation of honorary degrees. I thought I read somewhere students wanting Trump’s honorary degree pulled. That I believe has more merit.

  14. So the guy who claims to have created sizzurp is 26 but the song came and drink became popular in 2000, what a creative 9 year old! This is just another dumb fuck bragging about being a bad ass but watch his bragging become begging in court and see how fast he denies being the purple drink creator. It’s hard to have sympathy for stupidity.

  15. It wasn’t the Patriarchy that led Whedon to engage in such behavior. It was another word that, like ‘Patriarchy’, begins with the letter ‘P’, and ends with the letter ‘y’.

Sorry, but that’s a fact. Jack.

It ruined their marriage, and I’m sorry for their loss. Joss.

    1. Oh man your right this was as imprtant as Yemon or some other big underreported story in the world. Thank God we got to hear about some douche bag celebs and their divorce.

      1. Agreed, it’s all about personalities. Climate Change, Poverty, and Nuclear threats be damned; let them wait in line.

  16. Why are my taxes paying for this idiots vacations?? I pay 24% tax, work “part time” 40 hours a week and I have 4 days of vacation time after 9 fucking months of straight work.
You should work just as hard as the working class you pretend to care about

  17. Is cheating on your wife a masculine thing to do? I have never heard that, thus not cheating is not feminine. There relationship is there problem, not feminism’s problem, don’t be absurd

  18. I go to BU and Nick Fuentes didn’t get kicked out, he decided to leave citing death threats. Everyone hates him, but he’s also a huge joke on campus.

  19. “If we judge people based on their worst actions and we just use that as our outlook on them, then no one is going to have a positive reputation.”

That’s how you feel about the confederates who did much good for the economies & societies of southern states, except for their worst actions of slave-owning and defense of slavery, huh? That we shouldn’t judge them for their worst actions? Or does that logic only apply to the people that you like?

The hypocrisy that you two display – you two, most out of all of the hosts – when it comes to apologizing for the things and persons that you prefer, is both astounding and painful to watch. Every. Single. Time. I know you feel it – I know you can see it – but you never acknowledge it. Guess it hurts your egos too much.

The “is he a feminist” question is perfectly analogous to the “is he a non-racist” question. You can’t be a perfect feminist, just as you can’t be a perfect non-racist (at least in this society). He may take certain feminist actions, just as we may take certain non- or anti-racist actions, but we can’t ever perfectly be these things. This is the literal equivalent of asking, “Is he good or bad?” It’s complicated, it’s quantifiable, and it’s a grey mixture.

The way that Joss Whedon behaved was absolutely sexist and non- or anti-feminist. He has also taken feminist actions in the past (apparently, although I remain unconvinced). But we’re not talking about that right now. We’re talking about the emotional destruction that he wrought on his wife and the fact that HE FAILED to dissuade the public of the notion that he was some great feminist icon and that we WE FAILED to notice it. We’re CONTINUING TO FAIL to own it, too.

Joss Whedon should be considered a great feminist icon just as much as slave-owning confederates who did great things for their communities (beyond slavery) should be considered great leaders. Very wrong in their treatments toward some, very good in their treatment toward others.

Hilariously, Whedon jumps immediately to the “man of my times” defense that is so popular with apologists for slave-owning “great leaders”. Credit to the hosts for denying him this argument, but for the sake of honesty please quit trying to slap a permanent, whitewashed label of “feminist” on a guy who gaslighted, betrayed, and emotionally destroyed a woman for 15 years, before ultimately calling himself a victim of the patriarchy.

Now he’s gaslighting you, too… but you popularity-bitches are happy to eat his narrative, as long as it’s cool with the progressive crowd.

ALSO, shout out to mars54 for making the same point about the hypocrisy of our hosts (but much more concisely):

“in my mind, it’s not so much about the infidelity moral shit thing…. but the daily lie…. he is a firm ongoing long-term liar to his spouse… are we not flamed out daily at donnytinyhands’ daily lie habit? Does the topic of daily foundational lying make a difference? Please explain the various aspects of daily lying about who you are and what you are about that are acceptable and which are not?”

    1. There’s a big ass difference between someone cheating on someone, and fighting to keep an entire race of people in slavery, while also threatening the stability of your society.

  20. Duh. All these guidance systems are made in China. You think the Chinese haven’t built back doors into all this technology. In a matter of minutes, they could disable every guidance system in every ship, plane, and missile. It’s over before it starts.

    1. What guidance systems are made in China? Military hardware/firmware/software design is classified. It is not just PCs running Windows 10.

There are a limited number of allies whose citizens are regarded as minimal security risk, and China is not one of them.

All of the weapons programs I worked on or knew of were either purely domestic or limited to joint activities with Thorn EMI etc. ‘UK’ companies i.e. NATO.

      https://www.quora.com/Can-a-non-US-citizen-get-a-top-secret-clearance

  21. I’m a military vet and what people fail to understand is that all that high tech stuff doesn’t mean anything if the guys monitoring are exhausted. While at sea these Sailors have a craaazy schedule, google Five and Dimes in the Navy and you’ll understand.

  22. TYT needs to look more into the “neo nazi stabbing” story. I saw the guy’s original facebook post, and he claimed that the supposed attacker said absolutely nothing to him. Just ran up and stabbed him. He also showed no proof of an attacker(only a cut on his hand) and never filled out a police report. Seems like possible alt right propaganda to me…

  23. I just realised the USS John S McCain was named after John S McCain Snr, a huge name in US Naval history and the father of John S McCain part 2, another name well know in the ranks of sailors, and also Grand Father to John S McCain part 3, the Naval Pilot from Vietnam, and now famous for his thumbs down antics in the Senate.

I didn’t realise this family had such a huge influence on the military over the past 100 or so years. But I guess Emperor Dum Dum only likes ships that don’t get sunk…. :)

  24. Love the *Overtime* segment. Great idea. Too often the best segments don’t get to air because hour 1 runs long. Always wishing they could be pushed into hour 2… but if you’re gonna waste hour 2 on celebrity clickbait, well… Let the live audience know they can come back in half an hour for the stuff we find substantive.

    1. Agreed! It always seems like Anna is annoyed to go over and wants to leave as soon as the clock hits 5, so at least this way she can go and Cenk can give us more content.

  25. Is this Nazi haircut shit for real or is it just something that proliferated from the Macklemore tweet thing?! I’ve been sporting a similar type haircut, which I love, and not going to let Alt-right/Nazi fucks take it away from me. As if I needed more reason to hate these bastards more…

    1. oh it’s real, before it was even talked about i noticed & tweeted about tommy robinson & richard spencer having the same, official SS army haircut & asked others if it was a coincidence or if this was an ode to the SS. later on independently of me it start being picked up in the media & public convversation.

    2. if you look at the Nazi party old archival footage and pics of the SS you’ll see it is exactly alike. lol. i guess you have another reason to hate em now lol.

if i were you i’d just make a minor change, like have the sides grow out at number 1 length or half, ensure there is a tiny bit of hair there & then they can’t accuse you of being a Hitler worshipper. cuz the SS haircut if totally bold on the sides from my memory.

      1. Wow, did some more reading up since posting. Guy from Vice wrote an entire opinion piece on it back in Feb. Had no idea. Well I’ll concede to making some adjustment before abandoning completely. Guess I can’t believe neo-nazi are still numerous enough in 2017 to give two shits about, no thanks to the enabler in chief.

        1. Army Rangers wear it too, or at least they did around 1990 when I dated one–called a “high and tight”. I think it is a really bad idea to judge anyone for their hair style.

          1. of course it is, but people are still going to think there is some chance of a person with that haircut being a neo nazi. it’s a pity they have taken that haircut from us. totally up to the person if they want to make minor changes or not.

  26. If she didn’t know she didn’t want to know, she stayed in it for the kid and the security, eighteen year plan, She’s just trying to get in the last strike. They both should lose their feminism card, he for invoking the ‘patriarchie’, in feminism equating to the hatred of the males i.e. He was white Knighting him self with noble self loathing; see he proved he is still a good feminist! He almost pulled out a point there. Where as Bill in the end said with crooked finger “I did not have relations with that woman” I was willing to let it go at that as weak and as flawed, he still didn’t want to admit public shame to him self and his wife and a thread semblance of dignity for the impressions of his daughter Chelsie. I don’t think this is a stretch as predictable human behavior even for a sitting president to flight to presurve nuclear familial securities, look at the limbic migdula sesureing his appetites and obviating glaring weakness in high office now!

  27. 1)In Arizona, I spent $300 BEFORE I even got to the Medical Marijuana dispensary–$175 for Dr. and $175 for card. Then shelled out some coin for the “dosage.” If bought on the streets one could get a lot more with a lot less hassle–so much for regulating drugs in order to thwart cartels.

    2) Bannon will become head of a post-modern Bright Bulb.

    3) Looks like confederate flag bearing boy is a lefty judging by where I saw his handgun. I do give him some credit for his calm demeanor while the opposition is in his face.

    1. Why are you paying a doctor that much⁇ Deductibles⁇ Can’t be your co-pay. Pain Mgmt specialists are covered in most plans. This shows why Health Coverage needs to be uniform in every state. I’m guessing Arizona didn’t expand Medicaid either. That just sucks.

    2. In California, the appointment is as low as $50 ($40 for renewal) and there is no requirement for any card. Cards are available if you want immediate access to a co-op instead of the co-op making a copy of your referral letter and then having to call and verify with the doctor personally before you can enter.

Until next January, that referral prevents the state from prosecuting medicinal users, and after January it waives the considerable sales tax whereas cannabis is legalized at the state level for adults.

Pain management doctors generally do not write recommendations for cannabis. They are licensed to prescribe narcotics for chronic pain and they fear losing their licenses for prescribing narcotics in their practices. Although the risk is even less than a cop getting shot in the line of duty, pain management doctors are just as hysterical about the possibility of losing their privilege to prescribe narcotics regularly because that it the majority of what they actually do.

  28. Shame on you guys for this Joss Stone story. This has no news value at all and you know it. Unless you think this is moral news? What is this? It’s tabloid bullshit you’re doing for a video to get more clicks b/c the guy you’re helping his ex wife bash for divorce money is super famous among the people who might click on the video.

I defend TYT often. This makes it harder to do that. If you want people to give you a pass on this because you need to make money, what do I have to give breitbart a pass on because they have to make money appealing to the demographic that is likely to click through to them?

  29. Purple Drank has Codeine in it. He is selling something with a prescription drug in it.

Also, people die if they drink too much of this. Codeine is a respiratory depressant and Promethazine is a Central Nervous System depressant. Drinking too much Purple Drank makes you pass out and stop breathing.

That being said, it’s kinda hilarious that Sizzirup was in the news today.

  30. I’m getting so tired of “I don’t want to judge -as you judge. The man lied and cheated on
his wife for 15 years – he doesn’t deny that. Fact. He calls himself a feminist . Fact.
He’s very talented . Fact. Buffy was about the beautiful blonde cheerleader. Fact.
I’m a fan. Fact. I’ve never seen him as a feminist. How low is that bar? Because the
slayer was a girl? Wearing high heels etc? Doll house? I find his work equal opportunity
    sexist.
Why was this story on TYT? I don’t care about his personal life . This pure TMZ.
Not interesting – it’s sad and you’re not winning.

  31. in my mind, it’s not so much about the infidelity moral shit thing…. but the daily lie…. he is a firm ongoing long-term liar to his spouse… are we not flamed out daily at donnytinyhands’ daily lie habit? Does the topic of daily foundational lying make a difference? Please explain the various aspects of daily lying about who you are and what you are about that are acceptable and which are not?

  32. False equivalency Cenk. This white guy was not supporting the murderer, he was not claiming to be a nazi or a white supremacist. He was only claiming to be a confederate, he only talked about confederacy. Also I think a white confederate with two guns protesting and supporting that terrorist would get more attention from police than your implying, not as much if he were Muslim but more than none.

  33. I dont think they should kick him out, I think that if he wants to attend the school further he has to take multicultural classes, sociology classes, political classes. To basically teach him the truth about white history and society.

  34. Officer look, how can you even consider my state of the art BMW with a lot of sensors in it being responsible for this crash here with a Fiat??? I obviously just got attacked, right?

  35. The Nazis are causing/hyping this haircut thing cause a) theyre jealous of fab hair and b) they’re otherwise wildly unpopular
