We have examples, Jimmy Carter never had to make those “killing” decisions that every other President had to and he kept the US out of war. Hypotheticals are excuses that are used to justify the unjustifiable.
Old School just confirmed American Dream = terrorist cause
Americans in-general r too ignorant on History let alone International Political History. If we keep Americans ignorant; the more they share in common with Terror group then neighboring nation…
Cenk, it has to be said, Rednecks are People too! Your disparagement of them is no different than a right winger saying the N word, and then “I kid, I love N words.”
Think about it. Any sweeping characterization of a population is equally ignorant. Pick on individuals for what they did, sure, a group for actions of a minority…bullshit.
@Gerroditus
“Your disparagement of them is no different than a right winger saying the N word, and then “I kid, I love N words.”

This is utter bullshit, obviously coming from someone very ignorant of the plight of the minority, US history, or current events & culture.
That isn’t at all ‘equally ignorant’. Even if the words were the same derogatory form, WHICH THEY ARE NOT, as the N-Word holds entirely different & additional meaning beyond just being an insult (ex. history, slavery, racism, oppression, lynching, etc.) All things that ‘Redneck’ does not express in even its most derogatory usage.
One group is a white majority who has held power for the entirety of the existence of the USA. The other is a minority group who have been unjustly, unfairly, and unethically mistreated, abused, and brutally raped & murdered for the entirety of the USA. Even still today.
So dont pretend like saying ‘Redneck’, a word that barely has any power to even insult (as there is also some positive attribution to this word among country-loving people) to a word like ‘N*****’ which has incredibly powerful derogatory meaning behind it, endless DARK historical context, and the only ‘positive’ attribution is in the people oppressed by it trying to reclaim the word among themselves so as to diminish the power it has when non-blacks use the word. Which really isn’t positive, it’s mostly un-negative. White people dont have to do much of anything to remove the label of ‘Redneck’ because they are the majority.
So no. NOT EQUAL. And if I wasn’t mistaken, your views are likened to that of a Redneck. No wonder you are offended – on some level you must know you’re ignorant about all this but dont want to admit it. After all, Redneck AT ITS WORST just means you’re ignorant or uneducated. Not that heavy of an insult, as I just displayed.
Great rebuttal. Idk if you’re a minority, like myself, but that was well said and much appreciated. No hate at all for @gerroditus, but it’s not the same. Period.
No AP and no old school yet? Maby spend that 20 mil on simple automation and not on new content….
yea honestly I really wish they would improve the user experience for members. I really only support the show because I think they do good work and they’re fighting the good fight. from a user’s perspective on a video streaming interface though, really shitty experience.
Please post last nights OLD SCHOOL soon. PRETTY PLEASE.
I SECOND THIS.
Cenk promised Old School yesterday. Please deliver.
Need This from the 23rd & AP Live Tonight!
Gorrammit! I love listening to actual, real adults discussing real matters with intelligence and compassion. TYT is not perfect, but I love it for these kind of discussions. Goddess bless Cenk.
Agreed, WellingtonSmith.
I wasn’t listening to this section because I didn’t realize what the content is, but after tiring of Cenk’s endless bloviating and Ana’s stumbling, bumbling way of speaking, this is indeed a refreshing change.
My FAVORITE TYTOS.
I only joined up about a year ago and used to think Malcom was so salty! Now I KNOW he’s salty, lol JK. He’s super smart and informative and easily one of my faves. Actually, all my faves w/the exception of Asher, Irma, and Dave Koeller.
Where can I get the full old school song?
I think it’s a song by the band Real Big Fish.
Sounds a little like Buck o nine. I’m really curious about this. Do you know the song title?
Regarding Brett’s story of the study and the nuclear bomb. I can’t help but turn it around and ask what if it was Iran that makes the decision to drop the bomb on us to save their people? What if they killed 100,000 Americans or 1,000,0000? The citizens are just trying to live their lives. It’s the governments who are fighting. I say let the government leaders duke it out. They might think twice (or maybe not).
That notion Malcom mentioned, that the president must have some plan and cannot be an imbecile who is just winging it, was sometimes very visible with Obama too. While Obama is certainly a far FAR cry from Trump (he actually did have plans and is a smart guy), it was not uncommon for him to be put on a pedestal (sometimes even by libertarians) as if he was the smartest person in the world and whatever inscrutable designs he had whirling about in his head were invariably superior to the worthless plodding of us mere unpresidential mortals …
The office has, essentially, been deified, and those who are most personally invested in that deific image are loath to accepted that it has been sullied by no more than a shit-slinging ape in a suit.
Cenk, you were meant to update us on your weight. Please do not forget that.
per Ned /Stark, the man who passes the sentence carries out the execution, or something like that
Same.
My usual Saturday morning ritual is Old School then Friday Post Game. A double dose of Malcolm today. Going to be a good day.
The leftovers was amazing. Brett I’d like to see how long it took you to explain the rest of the leftovers to Cenk. Jesus Christ there is SO much in small detail that it would take like hours to explain.
‘Mongol’ is a pretty interesting movie about genghis khan
Brett, your Chris Matthews Hahbah impression is excellent! #moremoremore!
Oh, and someone should ask Brett that if he thinks we should kill killers, does he also think we should rape rapists? And steal from thieves?
Great episode! I like Brett and Malcolm. Hope they are on the Friday PG.
There have been a lot of studies about how more powerful people are worse at reading people, or what the scientists call “empathy,” than less powerful people. Rich people are worse at it than poor people, men are worse than women, white people are worse than black people. Unless you believe each of those groups are inherently less empathetic, it suggests that having more power is what makes you worse at it. But of course, cause and effect could be reversed in some situations, like Cenk posited.
The whole discussion about breaking the rules and getting ahead made me think of game theory. You can do a fun simulation here: http://ncase.me/trust/
Those questions about killing 100,000 thousand or 2 million people vs 10,000 soldiers were like the Trolley problem in reverse. Would you pull a switch so that the train killed 5 people instead of 1? And people said yes! Even when it was soldiers vs. civilians! Yikes.
The Stalin quote if anyone cares is “A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths are a statistic.”
I somehow missed this whole Malcolm Y show to my regret. I still miss WWJD? It was very Old School.
Life is sacred or it isn’t. The state killing an unarmed man, probably tied in some way,is barbaric no matter what he did. Plus, I personally would feel they got away with it if they die.
Plus I will always find the debate about Dropping the Nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to be a very interesting debate as there are cases to be made on both sides of the debate. Personally, I think we should not have dropped nuclear bombs on civilians. We would have been outraged if North Korea decided to drop bombs on two of our Major Cities
I really enjoyed this Old School. I could understand people being fed up with Trump talk, but that was not the majority of the episode. I enjoy the brain and emotional tests and discussing tough calls. I used to be in favor of the death penalty for 2 reasons: I thought it would save money a la Firing squads and also to deter. Then I saw the Innocence Project in High School and it got me really questioning my feelings on the death penalty. When I read about the innocent men and women we have put to death, that never sits well with me. Also, that it’s not practical. It doesn’t deter crime at all. Also, like Malcolm mentioned, where do we the people think we should be able to play hypothetical “God” and choose who we should deem worthy of death. Nevermind that our whole justice and penal systems are so corrupt that I don’t feel right putting people on death row. I would abolish the rule in prison where a child rapist can cry suicidal thoughts and get put into protective custody in prison, that is bullshit.
I have written 6 books and I hold a PhD and I cannot understand half the sentences Brett makes. I am not trying to be demeaning. I just don’t understand his syntax at all. I hope it is only me.
Didn’t enjoy this one guys… Sorry
Hey how about no Trump in old school????????
Please god, if only.
I totally agree. I would rather hear about the top 5 cuisines or random stories… I get Trump is a huge part of the world now, but I think of old school as my break from it.
Fair enough Sting. They brought it up though, very unfair!
Trump really is like an angry Stuart Smalley. His daily affirmations, and he actually does it out loud. Paraphrasing; “My response to Charlottesville…was excellent”. Petulant seven year old child.

Could someone please post the links to the Articles discussed?
