  7. At the end of the show was another pitch about supporting independent media and resisting the corporate media. Because of this rhetoric, I took it for granted that TYT was a nonprofit media outlet and that it needed a broad donor base to sustain its 501(c)3 status without any one donor “tipping” it out of public charity status. Then I did the research and it turns out TYT is a for-profit and Cenk Uygur is worth millions. My wife says TYT is the lefty version of Rush Limbaugh, and questions the integrity of any news show that involves pundits yelling at the camera. I’ve been a supporter for a while because I do think there is a lot of value in the way TYT reports and most of all in the guests that are invited on the show.

    I’m not against Uygur or anyone else making money, but I wonder how long TYT can stay credible with appeals to support media that isn’t controlled by the super rich. I know that TYT is very open about funding Super PACs and other work that has a clear and strong bias. Still, I can’t help but ask, what are the checks and balances on this? Is TYT in favor of the wealthy using their unprecedented influence on the American public – as long as they are on the right side?

      Of course it’s a for-profit. (Note that being for-profit does not mean being “corporate”, which has to do with being owned by the major media conglomerates and with major corporate sponsoring). I would invite you to try finding a Youtube channel with at least 3 million subscribers (6 million if you count all of TYT Network) which is run as a non-profit.

      Make no mistake: I totally agree with you that ideally it should be a non-profit and/or a cooperative, owned by its members and/or employees. But if you look at TYT’s history and most of all, its growth trajectory (which is by FAR the most important aspect of that history) then you realize that it had to be done under a certain business model and by using specific means (with most of those means – such as Youtube obviously – located on the commercial internet, not the non-profit internet).

      Looking back, it’s hard to see a path by which TYT would have been able to assemble its considerable audience and membership, under different (less commercial, or non-profit) models. There are many others who have tried to do something similar, and they did not get far. For example, Democracy Now (which I like and respect) is a non-profit, but its audience remains lamentably small, even though DN has been at this for much longer than TYT has.

      The conclusion is that TYT’s combination of elements, ownership model and tools has worked, in terms of making it an Indie Media Force, and that imposing a non-profit model on it would very likely have upset that whole applecart. That’s not a pleasant thought but IMO it is the case.

      If you are a member, then you want that insurgent, status quo-attacking task that TYT carries out, to continue to be carried out. It’s now in an unprecedented media position, and while its for-profit nature remains unfortunate (and hopefully, can be corrected at some point), the potential of it must not be wasted for reasons of internal or organizational imperfection.

      An additional note: why do progressive Youtube channels decide to become part of TYT Network? It’s because of the obvious opportunity to be promoted as part of that network; because they still retain a great deal of independence under the deal they get; BUT most of all, it’s because TYT gives them the aid of its extensive legal team, so that they can adequately protect themself from various lawsuits, slander charges, and so on. Apparently, legal defense/advice of this caliber is something that most of those channels cannot afford, but TYT has it. It must cost a considerable amount of money.

      He’s definitely wealthy (not sure exactly) but I get the impression that he made most of it in ways that are not related, or only indirectly related, to TYT: when he was working for NBC, by giving speeches and other outsider contracts, etc.

      What Cenk has done with TYT Network is a wonderful achievement that he deserves lots of moral and political credit for. But yes, I too would like more information on the precise state and nature of his finances, all the same.

      That’s intellectually lazy, unwilling to look at the true nature and specific methods of the actor. Just like saying “Jimmy Dore is the Alex Jones of the Left” is intellectually lazy.

      Think about it this way: Rush Limbaugh is radical and anti-establishmentarian in the worst possible ways (racist, reactionary, going on fascist). The others are radical and anti-establishmentarian in the best possible ways (albeit in varying degrees). And Limbaugh is not even a genuine radical in many ways, in that he doesn’t really object to the class of people who already control the relations of power in society (but that’s a normal absence of radicality, for a guy like Limbaugh).

        1. Appreciate it but, hold on brother, I was partially agreeing with ORhiannon’s arguments (which he formulated very well), not simply refuting. :)

          It’s certainly a good debate, worth having. Arguments and counter-arguments on the financial side of things need to be had, and more transparancy about TYT’s workings would absolutely be a good thing.

Your wife is just making this assumption cuz she has never seen a news guy yelling and screaming before, so she naturally (and somewhat understandably) thinks that there is something wrong with this picture. In fact, that is a sign that he is not controlled by anybody & that no other entity has editorial control of what he says and does. it’s also a sign that he genuinely cares (this is why he yells sometimes) cuz he genuinely cares about the suffering that he is talking about. Please look at the video Cenk did on how (and why) he left MSNBC, and even better, watch it with your wife.       Also, he is not worth millions nor does he make millions. He takes a modest salary for a talk show host to get by without struggling, and he has brought his house with the TV money he used to make (not sure if it’s paid off or not, I assume not). Those things that estimate your worth & income are BS, since they use fame as a metric and correlate it to income using a TV advertising model, and given internet ads pay so much less, they are off by about an order of magnitude sometimes.

Thank you Jordan Chariton for showing me how actual reporting is done, it looked as cool when you did it as when its portrait in a movie, in my view, you are a TRUE rockstar and I cannot wait to get the rest of your book and see more of the stories you will debunk!! With that being said…my budget is limited and I cannot keep subscribing to this network or Jimmys Patreon anymore, with this little content, I do not see why still pay for it, I know you guys want us to pay so you can show the world that the Progressive movement actually exists but I am not afraid anymore, I know it does, I am NOT FREAKING OUT, see you on Youtube, peace!

  12. This is bullshit. I’m not wasting the scarce funds I have to wait over a day to get to see this show; the only show I watch on this network. This happens all the time! News is about current events. Things are moving particularly fast in the Trump era. Why would I want to watch yesterday’s news? Just put the video up immediately. You have one break in the show that you edit out. How hard is it to remove this? People can just jump ahead anyway; there’s no need to even wait. So again, quit the shit! If this happens one more time I’m cancelling my membership.

    Oh yeah, stop shilling for Bernie’s stalking-horse ass and his sheepdogging agenda –– that goes for faux-Left Ro Kahanna as well.

Expanding on the point that Sam made r.e. politicians voting in favour of going to War, I have always believed in a similar idea myself (also, similarly to Sam, I served 12 years in the Australian Navy and am still in the Reserve). My proposal however, is that any member of parliament (or congress/senate in US) that votes in favour of war automatically have all of their military aged children/grandchildren conscripted for active service in that war. War should be an option of last resort, and if the situation isn’t dire enough for them to send their own children, then it isn’t dire enough for them to send anybody else’s children either.

    1. Good question, and a TYT admin should answer this! Then again, Jimmy could have been high and forgot stuff.
      On a different note – I get why Jimmy is against the Democratic party (so am I it drives me insane seeing the BS coming out of the corporate Dems), problem is while starting a new party would maybe help on the local stage, it would be a fucking disaster nationally.

  24. When Jimmy says “if you give me $30,000 a day I’d say whatever you want me to say!” Then you need to stop complaining about the people that do. If you recognize they’ve sold out, you can’t also expect them to be different and deliver actual news.

    1. Er, he’s not ‘expecting them to deliver real news’. Nobody is (except perhaps for the fatally, incurably naive). But that doesn’t mean we should just accept this reality and let them get away with it, undisturbed and uncriticized. We certainly shouldn’t acquiesce in their corruption, or be silent about it, at any time.

      We still have to attack these people with everything we’ve got, and relentlessly remind the public that these sad and selfish hirelings have sold out and that they can’t be trusted. That they are actively hurting the public interest through their corruption and careerism.

      That’s what Jimmy is doing (though some of his lines of attack are more effective than his other lines of attack, I’ll grant you). And this is not “complaining”, it’s media criticism, it’s political activism, and it’s civic journalism. It’s pretty insulting to dismiss any of these heroic tasks as mere ‘complaining’.

To me, there is so clearly a level of sarcasm involved there, which means it has to be read as “I wouldn’t take that money because I know that it would make me a scumbag. And I say this only in order to emphasize that the people who do take that money, really are scumbags.”

          The part about passing an attack off as a trival complaint being insulting wasn’t aimed at you, anyway (admittedly, not clear). I was speaking In a general sense there, in that it is just an extremely common tactic used to dismiss attacks on corporate media.

  27. Jimmy should consider having a female cohost like cenk and ana. I noticed when jimmy has too many men on the show it turns into a testosterone rant fest, but he’s a lot more funnier and calm when theirs a female guest on.

    1. Jimmy has ranted with ana to his left just like he has with steve, its not a male “testosterone” thing, its a “passion for the things that are coming out of his mouth “thing.

    2. If you combine the fact that 1) there is a lot of ranting on TYT in general (appropriately so) with the fact that 2) there are more male pundits than female pundits on TYT (especially when it comes to politics) then, of course, it might look like there is this kind of dynamic.

      But this is not a real correlation, I think. It’s just a surface impression that follows from a mostly male pundit group doing a LOT of ranting.

      1. I am a man, and I think its true that women (mature women not teeny boppers) are better at noticing when they are getting angry because they are generally better with managing emotions compared to men. This is not a secret by the way if your still skeptical read a psychology book.

        1. That’s certainly and absolutely true in a general sense and it’s a good point. Whether it really makes a big difference to punditry and to TYT in particular, is less clear-cut. For one thing, the female pundits at TYT don’t seem to be very mature, neither physically nor psychologically (not a criticism of them, merely a neutral observation).

          Incidentally, Jimmy does nearly every episode of JImmy Dore Show – where he rants nearly as much – with his wife, Steff Zamarano, as co-host. Now Steff seems very mature, being a teacher and ostensibly of the same age as Jimmy. On the other hand, perhaps the wife-as-cohost dynamic is a special case, where you can’t really get the kind of moderating female influence that you are positing.

Also please continue to point out the real cause of our current-day terrorism; American arms sellers, and America’s illegal invasions of other countries. I recently saw a clip of that UK show “Have I Got News For You” and one of the panelists repeated the propaganda that the Islamist terrorists
    attack America because they disapprove of the Western lifestyle. He may have been joking, but he sounded like he believed it. That is the sort of thing that makes me crazy; people hear news bites, have no critical thinking, and repeat things that aren’t true.

  29. Since you have Chariton on the show so often, can we talk about finding an alternative comments section for the TYT Politics videos, other than Youtube? They’ve ghosted every single comment that I make out there. I’ve no idea whether it’s Youtube’s faulty spamming software, or TYT being pissed at how many times I called them out, on their mistreatment of dissenters, to their points of view. On the TYT channel, my comments are ghosted some of the times; it’s a crap shoot.

    That’s ironic, since it’s the TYT Politics crew and Jimmy that I like and respect the most, second only to Ana.

    They should at least have a Google+ venue for comments, or their own members section, here. Since TYT Politics is so popular, they should have some alternatives. (Other than Twitter and Facebook, please. Those are both too addictive).

    1. It’s possible. I want to believe Cenk lets people say what they want. It’s not like TYT has corporate sponsors. We are the sponsors. Perhaps Jimmy is calmer due to other reasons. He was pretty shaken-up by the WaPo events.

    2. I’ll never understand how people can believe Cenk is corporate or has been co-opted by corporate interests or anything like that. Because he supported Hillary in the election? Is it really impossible to understand why he would think voting for Hillary was the only way to beat Trump in the election? You can disagree with his conclusions that third parties can’t win major elections therefore you need to vote for the least worst option that is likely to have a chance at winning, but given the entire history of elections in this country, I would hope as a rational human being you can see the pragmatism in his stance there. And then when immediately after the election he tore Hillary to shreds and was just about the only major news personality to defend the voting public and place the blame squarely on the person who deserved it, i.e. Hillary Clinton, does that count for nothing?

      Or is it about the Russia thing? Why is it impossible to square the ideas that Trump probably did something impeachable with Russia, Russia probably hacked the election or at least did something to try to influence the outcome, AND that the DNC is still the worst thing ever and trying to use all of the above to absolve itself of any responsibility of how terrible it is? Did you forget that Cenk _literally co-founded Justice Democrats_, a group whose entire purpose is to overthrow the corruption within the DNC and the Democratic party establishment in general?

      You can disagree with his conclusions and ideology and whatever else, but this is a dude who clearly is principled and behaves in a manner consistent with those principles. He’s already given up huge amounts of money from MSNBC on those grounds. I’ve got problems with Cenk myself but his character is not one.

His progressive accomplishments are real. So, when all is said and done, I still want to be on Cenk’s side of the fight and be in Cenk’s corner, and I’m sure Jimmy still feels likewise.

    I would venture to say he is not the only young person who understands what Disaster Capitalism has done to our country and the middle class. My 16 – 22yo kids don’t believe anything the govt (current or past) says.
    And before you say, “Young people don’t vote,” my 3 older kids all voted in the primaries & the general and NOT for DNC-Clintoncrats OR Rethugs.

    Real change is coming. I am struck by the fact that people born during Reagan, and the Greed is Good Era, are in revolt. That those born during he Clintoncrat/NeoLib, Bankster Rise, are in revolt.
    The phony-hippies turned yuppie baby-boomers and some Gen Xer’s, have children or grandchildren who are REAL Progressives.
    Because they know there is NO “American Dream” for them.
    They’ll have to re-create it for themselves with the few of us older folks who are willing to help.

    1. I’m in the UK and I’ve been watching UK coverage of the election and specifically Corbyn related news for the last 2 days. The bias was unbelievable before the election started, but when it did the TV media had to give fair coverage and by and large they did, hence the “surge”.What has surprised me is how positive the coverage has been since the result. I guess it’s because it’s such a good story and they get to laugh at the people who slagged off JC , even if they were equally guilty.How long this will last is another question,yet now the genie is out of the bottle and it’ll be harder to vilify JC. what’s more encouraging is,the more they smear now the better it is for Labour because it will galvanise his followers.

  46. I asked this on a previous video but I didn’t realize the default setting for being notified of comment replies was ‘off’, so I don’t know if anyone responded. It’s ‘on’ now… I think. :) Is there ANY way to share these videos w/non-members? While I love to support you and will gladly continue to, the info is too important, well-done, and ‘rare’ to keep to ourselves. Everyone will not become members. Hell, it took time for ‘me’ to commit to it myself and I’ve watched TYT for some time. (Funds are not plentiful for me, as is the case for many as you know.) And I’ve got so many (Dem/liberal) friends on FB who post Wash. Post links, the NYTimes links, MSNBC links, pro-Cory Booker people, pro-Cuomo people, and I’ve got little to counter them with, save for what I lamely attempt to convey based on the indie media outlets I respect. If I could share your videos they’d (perhaps) see that while we need to indeed fight Trump, we also need to fight the Corp Dems and the DNC.

  52. Here is a fantasy I keep having – a politician who takes TONS of bribes, and then does the right thing – calls out his donors for thinking they could influence him with money, no matter what his past history, this “epiphany” may win the backing of the entire electorate – maybe?

    1. No offense of course but that’s a fantasy. The stuff of superhero tales or fairy tales. People generally don’t build a whole career on their ultimate objective of being shot in the back – because being shot in the back by their wealthy donors is exactly what would happen in that scenario.

      Even if you were a politician who really wanted to do the right thing all the way at the end of that disgusting journey…who has the stamina, the singlemindedness, and the necessary self-loathing to keep up a scam such as this? It doesn’t happen. You need to be against money in politics, and against the donors, from the start.

    P.S. I have to warn you. I am a Chicago activist who works hard, is a chicago politics and chicago political history lover and reader, and tries to keep his bullshit detector high.

    I don’t want to name names, but the person who runs the People’s Summit is a megalomaniacal power hungry dick. If you want a metaphor, the group they run, “The People’s Lobby,” is like the DNC, and other Chicago activists are like Bernie campaign. The person’s group gets in the way of progress sometimes, and is somewhat ineffectual when it comes to making real progressive change. Luckily they are not nearly as powerful in this town as the DNC is nationwide.

    We work hard as fuck on police brutality stuff, healthcare inequity reversal, and charter school reform, and this director of “The People’s Lobby” props up candidates that they can control instead of supporting candidates that fight against the the deep rot of the political system. Even though the candidates they support are often completely against progressive causes such as charter school reform and anti corruption measures that “The People’s Lobby,” and the “People’s Summit,” purport to represent.

    Again I won’t name names, which means it is just one person’s word, but I urge you to talk to groups like BLM chicago or BYP100, or other more grassroots neighborhood groups if you want to support an activist group, and just be wary of groups that say one thing and do another (it seems you already are wary, I am just stressing it). The Chicago teachers union too would be a good place to start.

    However, politics, like life, is weird. The conference draws great people such as yourself and seems like a place to exchange ideas. I would have been there but I had to pay, which sort of defeats the purpose in a way of having an inclusive summit.

    This was just to give you a well rounded view.

  56. That was a super-fantastic show with all these guests and their stories fighting against the Corporate Coup d’etat and fighting for progressive policies and programs that work for all of us. So much good perspectives, advice and hope.

    Keep doing this – great interview questions, good format and setting – it seemed flawless and easy and genuine!

    We need this show at least twice a week with multiple guests – especially interviewing our $2M investigative reporters!!!!

  60. I’ve noticed that the AGGRESSIVE Progressives have been a LOT LESS “Aggressive” in the past three or four shows… which coincidentally came after that smear job the Washington Post wrote on Jimmy.

    Is there a connection?

    Jimmy, were you scared off by that hack of a paper??? It’s quite clear you’ve changed.

    Where is the angry, truly aggressive Jimmy we’ve come to love and expect to see on this show????

    1. Yeah! Steve even said that as Jimmys audience grows he has more responsibility and has to behave accordingly cause the opposition is now watching and attacking back.
      Of course I don’t want Jimmy to change but he does have to be smarter, cause “they” will smear.

  61. I thought it was a good show, good discussions. I watched Josh and his first movie and I was always struck by his road trip aspect protesting a pipeline. I would have had much more respect for Josh if he would have done his trip in an electric vehicle. I know that at the time it was slim pickings, but that has changed. We still have work to do, it is time that Elon Musk has a serious competitor for a small, inexpensive EV. But even he has welcomed the competition. I recently took a trip that normally takes 3 hours from Switzerland to Germany in an electric Nissan NV-200 and it took me 11 hours. I felt like Ulysses. maybe I should have made a film. I am pushing to have more Gigafactories built since this is the key to going to EV. I am surprised that TYT and AP don’t talk about this subject.

  67. Nomi and Fox just put a little bit of hope back into me. It has been gone for a long time. Why doesn’t Fox just make videos for TYT too? The channel could really use a bit of hope from activists with all this cynicism.
