  1. Cenk, don’t be scared of pulling for a 90% top marginal tax rate for our wealthiest. You are dead on correct about how much having a much higher top marginal tax rate will benefit out economy.

  4. You’re missing the mark a bit on Sweden, Cenk – as a pro-Swedish social democrat I’ve long believed that race is a vitally important factor. It’s a lot easier to convince people that welfare programs are good if they believe the benefits are going to “people like me”. One of the biggest obstacles to social democratic policies in America is that the wealthy and powerful have, for so long, expertly wielded the wedge of racial animosities to convince middle-class whites that welfare isn’t for respectable “people like me” but for degenerate “Others” whether it be blacks or anchor babies or boogie-man Islamist infiltrators. I strongly believe that racial diversity is one on America’s greatest strengths and worth fighting for, but it does present a genuine challenge for Americans who support greater social spending programs. The only way we can have both social welfare and diversity is to be vigilant in recognizing and challenging racism so that more and more Americans come to see each other, no matter their race or creed, as “people like me”.

Might I add, that your idea of believing that the benefits are going to “people like me” is the reason why a Swedish model type society does not work in Southern European countries. The people there do as much as they can to avoid paying taxes because they just don’t believe that their money will go towards benefits for people like them. Their default setting is that politicians are corrupt and you’re are sucker if you give away your hard earned cash to line their pockets.

  5. I read Scott Adams, who claims Trump is some sort of genius Master Persuader, then I hear Cenk calling him an incompetent child. I think Trump has a certain native cunning in marketing to the rubes, but is completely out of his depth in international politics. He seems to have adapted to dealing with the pols in the GOP, as evidenced by the House passing AHCA. IOW I don’t think he’s smart, but neither is he as dumb as I’m hearing on TYT. I do think he’s dangerous, and I think it is dangerous that the media keeps underestimating him.

  6. Part of the story of the Swedish economy is a big housing bubble still going strong in the major cities. Debt-to-income ratio has been climbing for 20 years.

    Also refugees have been blocked from coming here for over a year. Something that was done by the social democratic government over the protests of the party members.

    1. I hear you; I’m always a bit weary about TYTs Sweden reporting. Like how he says that the economy is doing well, when this is the first of several years that we’re not experiencing deflation. -_- Also, you’re right on the refugee situation. Overall Sweden is among the countries that has taken the most refugees, but it is no longer doing so! And what’s her name can brag all she wants about high tax rates leading to a good economy, but as a Swedish leftie I’m not happy about rising taxes when e.g. my health care is turning shitty because the good doctors are leaving the public health care clinics to work for private for profit clinics that also get a share of my tax money through the nationational insurance that then goes straight to their profits and doesn’t get put back into the system — and that is why they keep increasing taxes.

      BUT the bottom line is that he’s right, compared to the US the swedish economy is working. With regards to the housing bubble, it’s there but unlike the US, the government is doing a lot to try and regulate it. Banks here are not happy about recent government mortgage regulations aimed at trying to slow the ridiculous prices. That isn’t to say they’re succeeding, the only way to stop a housing bubble imho is to build more housing (a fascinating story for another time).
      But, that said, Swedish house prices are no where close to the average european union prices and some economists predict that prices will continue to rise until they reach european union levels. However, if this were the US the government would be deregulating housing loans right about now.

We the immigrants, we the Muslims, Jews, working class, women, the LGBQT communities, we the parents negotiating between two to three jobs to make ends meet, we students burdened with backbreaking loans, we conscientious public school teachers, committed environmentalists, responsible scientists … We the liberation theologians, philosophers, theorists, critical thinkers … We cannot afford nihilism. The very idea of it is ridiculously alien. Those anorexic models parading with those ridiculous dresses wrapped around their plastic surgery wounds on the red carpet at Met Gala might have pangs of nihilism if they are off their Prozac. Not us.

    We will not bend backward to accommodate power and play dead. We will fight back, the defiant future of this country is already born and buoyant in the beautiful birth of the children we have mothered and fathered in this country, on this blessed land of Native Americans where generations of African slaves have suffered to call it their and now our homeland.

    Between the exceptionalism and nihilism of white supremacists is rooted and rising the defiant determination of an entirely different vision of what it means to be an “American”. We are, as I write, commandeering the metaphor for a whole new vintage: the Native Americans, the African Americans, the new and old immigrant Americans, Muslims and Mexicans, the nightmare of Trump and his ilk is our precious, beautiful dream.

    3. Yeah, for fucks sake. The story about the photos was embarassing. He presented that story that, if the Russians had brought a listening device, it would then be undetectable after they left. How little credit does he give the Secret Service to do their job?
