That AT&T / Concast comedy Cenk did, I literally live it – Fiber provider is literally 1/2 mile from my house, but they do not service my area! I can get Concast for broadband. Or I can go Dial-up or Satellite. Blah.
Local biz and town buildings can get Fiber through a local company, but they won’t service residences. Grr!
All the infrastructure is staring me in the face daily to have “Access” to fiber, but I can’t use it because they way these companies have even got VT’s government drawing service lines >_<
About Coulter I would make the argument that freedom is not compromised by not letting her speak on any of her topics of hate at public locations. Because undoubtedly freedom is compromised by hate’s social manifestations. I find it unlikely that her speech does not help fuel hate. We just need to go looking for the effects of that hate, and contextualize it as crime (WHICH IT FUCKING IS). With the power of the Internet and science one day we can even link these hate-spewing wads to the dipshits they inspire to violence. Or even simply link them to people or organizations who spew mis-information that leads to violence. Which should also be a crime. A smashed car or shop window is not violence. Stopping a bigot from speaking HATE is not violence. The physical world is replaceable, life is not. Hate can have no freedom. Proponents of hate cannot have freedom to spew their hatred.
I agree the specific identity of the window smashers are the least reported part of protest stories. TYT should be all over this the problem — however they have bigger fish to fry . Why does nobody dig down and say who the fuck are these people? Maybe we TYT fans should be amateur investigative journalists on behalf of TYT– they don’t have the time for the sub- story. In New Orleans the local police caught specific people. They caught the guys because they were wearing masks at night and you are not allowed to wear masks at night in parts of New Orleans. I don’t care who it turns out to be I just want to know. How hard is it to identify people who arrive on scene in costume? Especially people who are in masks Breaking windows

I am sure we all feel as Ana does and it is real hard and depressing at times to watch the news. When I think about stopping or explain to others why it is important I remember this quote from the walking dead of all places. Tyreese said,
” My dad always told Sasha and me that it was our duty as citizens of the world to keep up with the news. When I was little and in his car, there were always those stories on the radio. Something happens 1,000 miles away or down the block. Some kind of horror I couldn’t even wrap my head around. But he didn’t change the channel. He didn’t turn it off. He just kept listening. To face it. Keeping your eyes open. My dad always called that paying the high cost of living.”
Me too! So nineties, and I love it.
While true that large internet corporations would have the means to pay the broadband providers “ransom”, companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter rely, to different degrees, on externally generated content. In Google’s case their primary service, their search engine, is 100% dependent on the availability of other websites. So while, http://www.google.com may be quick, any link you click on could be subject to throttling. It is in Google’s best interest to keep all websites on an equal playing field considering that the average user doesn’t know (or care) how the internet actually works. This could result in negative user opinion of Google (especially if they don’t understand that the throttling isn’t coming from Google) and hence a weakened market share.
In Facebook and Twitter’s case, their users generate a lot of internal data, but also share a significant number of images, videos, and links in general. User engagement is fickle and if there is a marked slowdown in accessing even a small fraction of this external content users may put down their phones (which may be good sometimes) and stop interacting with the app. Fewer users interacting = less ad revenue.
Do some research on Metcalfe’s law. While designed to describe telecommunication networks it applies equally to any social network. The value of any network, social or otherwise, increases exponentially with the number of devices/users connected and vice versa. Facebook, Google, and Twitter do not want to lose any users for any reason.
It’s obviously anarchists who are responsible for the violence. They start trouble at just about every protest they hear about. They are just as hungry for attention as Ann Coulter because they are completely irrelevant. People who are genuinely protesting need to be vigilant at keeping an eye on anarchists who show up. They need to know they’re not welcome if they want to start something.
Please don’t get violent Libs, don’t give them any ammunition! Loving your hair today Ana :)
YES, “NEMO”!!! Cenk is totally right.
Ana! Stop ending every statement with “Right?”.
Wtf has Stephan A Smith ever done to Ana? lol
I assume it stems from the Ray Rice stuff, that was a pretty hot topic and he made some comments that she came down hard on
Ana I think, gets hit and emotionally effected more than the other hosts by all of the bad things going on around the world and in the US in the news. Problem is that good news really isn’t news and the horrible things happening get condensed and make you feel like there’s nothing but bad in the world. I find myself really getting effected and upset when I can tell Ana is feeling this.
It is kinda like depression or a aspect of it. When I have been depressed, I feel like there is nothing but pain and horrible things going on in the world and that the universe is inherently sick and evil. So any good is drowned out and overwhelmed by it, but it passes and how ever long 6 months or whatever and you start to become well again, you remember that all that darkness and shit in the world is not the majority.
There is so much happiness and never told bravery and kind heartedness in the world. All I would say to Ana or anyone that gets fucked up with all the negative is find that grounding thing that brings you back and reminds you. For me the other day, I was driving and it was just simply this cute little girl in the car next to me at the red light I looked at who smiled at me and made me smile back.
If I were president, I would only ban people who write novels in the comments section. THANKS A LOT, BITCHES!!
#tldr
Bahahaha ‘Nemo’, I love you Cenk.
And yeah violence is not the answer, let them speak and make fools of themselves.
Dear Cenk and Ana,
Please stop saying that leftists , when they use violence, lose the moral high ground to right wingers. Resorting to violence doesn’t make a leftist morally equivalent to racist, xenophobic, LGBT-phobic, misogynistic, white supremacists. Does that mean that violence isn’t at times counterproductive? -No, but you can make that point without making false equivalencies. In WWII, did the Allies lose the moral high ground to the Nazis because they resorted to icky violence? How about the slaves who rose up in revolt against the slave owners? Did the enslaved become morally equivalent to the people who were systematically torturing and raping them? If your answer is yes to those questions, then you’re not at all the moral person you claim to be. If your answer is yes, then you have no morality to speak of. Please stop with the tired talking point about “violence always makes you lose the moral high ground”. You can make the point that violence, in many instances, is counterproductive without using the moral high ground rhetoric.
I think that it’s a good thing that people like “Nemo” and Coulter should cancel their appearances out of fear and I don’t think that compromises the 1st Amendment. It doesn’t compromise the 1st Amendment because protesters are not the government and if the prevent a speaker from speaking, then too damn bad. The issue is that part of the reason these right wing hate mongers find these campus speaking engagements appealing is the prestige factor that they get when they add the names of these higher learning institutions to their resume as having been a guest speaker. By getting to use institutions of higher learning as a venue to spout their hate, it in some part gives credence to the notion some have that hate speech, bigotry, and racism have an equal and legitimate place in the public discourse and exchange of ideas. That sort of thing should not be allowed to stand, and that’s why I lose zero sleep over the fact that right wingers and white supremacists lose their speaking engagements over intimidation. They have the right to free speech, but that right does not protect them from the consequences of that speech.
Sincerely,
Eugene Debs
Amazing comment. And yes, I also agree that violence and window smashing is bad, hurts the movement a bit. And yes, i agree with at least one other comment stating that you guys basically are missing half the story. It’s a bit weird to read about these things on twitter and then have TYT catch up a few days later, if at all. The alt-right nazis are indeed planning violence and posing as the “Black Bloc” anarchists to further confuse the situation. And that has actually worked, cuz here’s TYT doing the story with no mention of these nazis.
I love y’all, but you need to find a few more twitter news accounts to follow. This has been out there for at least a week.
The violence is F*cking planned! Alt-rightists and Nazis are all over 4chan and Nazi websites talking about how they’re going to pick fights if liberals protest in hopes of starting a riot. They win either way! Either liberals stop their provocateurs from speaking, and look bad; or Nazis turn peaceful constitutional protests into violent riots, and make liberals look worse.
Here is a compromise solution. Voldimort’s Daughter or any other right-wing troll can speak when they want, but they have to provide additional private security at their own expense (NOT THE SCHOOL’S), they and the people who listen to the speech have to sign liability wavers absolving the school and protestors of any responsibility for personal injury physical/emotional/imaginary, no one be allowed to wear a mask or any kind of face covering on campus that day, and the police ID and record the identity of everyone entering the campus for at least 5 hours before the speech. That should reduce the likelihood of a protest turning violent, and make it more difficult to frame liberals for starting a riot.
I agree with Ana today: this was a shitty news day, very depressing. It’s a real fucking shame that the Republicans are bought and sold by the 30 pieces of silver their fat-ass rich donors give them to do their bidding.
Think about it. The Democrats if they would follow Bernie’s lead could usher in a new progressive age in America, create untold NEW levels of wealth and prosperity and flush out the corrupt, evil/vile Congress. They could make the Republican party a small minority party that it used to be. But no, they’ve made the same deal with the devil to sell their immortal souls for the same 30 pieces of silver.
Sad!
Disgusting!
Damn… TYT isn’t helping my stomach ulcer… won’t stop watching, though…
This says Ana and John, but it’s Ana and Cenk. :-D
Ana’s looking good!!
