  1. I listened to this postgame way too late (I love the Friday post games, so I go back when I don’t have time), but you guys hit on something that is very important to me.

I hope someone at TYT will read this, because it has actually changed my viewing habits of TYT.

The grammar conversation had me thinking, “Yes! Exactly!!”. The small videos, and especially hour two, are things that I avoid because I actually found that I’m picking up the bad grammar habits. Perhaps I’m an old curmudgeon, but it’s like nails on a chalk board to me when things are not concise and accurate.

“Reading into a story” does not mean researching it. It means taking out of it a conclusion that wasn’t intended. If you want to say you were researching it, you likely mean “Looking into a story”.
You don’t “stand on lines” when waiting for the next teller unless you’re from Long Island for some weird reason.
You don’t “graduate college” just like you don’t “check-in hotel” or “go library”. College is not the noun earning a diploma – hopefully it’s you, but with that grammar I really don’t know why.
And of course, there are plenty of other examples that I cannot think of now.

I’m not sure if it comes from not reading enough books, or using too many emojis when growing up, but I wish there would be more focus on leading by example, rather than trying to please the lowest common denominator.

What I mean to say is that it’s dumbing down my speech and my writing, two things I rely on for my job. I’m not mr perfect with grammar myself, but I do try to keep things at a high standard.

Here, I simply wanted to inform you that I avoid hosts that do not speak well, and misuse the English language. It not only grates on me, but I end up picking up these bad habits. I sincerely wish that TYT had a higher standard.

  2. Steve,

Send me, I know this isn’t the traditional way to get a job but I’m thinking ‘hey modern times, let’s try something new.’

Send me overseas. I’ll go to any refugee camp in any country I’m legally able to visit. I can document the conditions of factory workers in China that work for American companies like the Trump Organization (I used to live in China this is something I could quite easily do)
I’ll go and take photographs of the devastation done to Yemen from American bombs. I’ll cover the French election, South Korea’s response to North Korea. I’ll go to Russia to cover protests and I’ll go to Africa to cover conflicts.

This isn’t a troll and I’m dead serious. I want to work for you guys. Like I said this probably isn’t proper way to get hired but I’m trying to think outside the box. I’m well travelled, mature and I know I could be an asset. I’ll even do it voluntarily if it will help get the truth out there regarding what’s really happening in the world.

My name is Ross Tonkin, give me a shot.

  3. I think Jordan would do a better job, as I think he has a TyT brand that the others don’t. That trip is pretty important and I think it’s gotta be with people who are TyT branded.

I would actually pick Has as well if he could speak the language, because it would lower barriers.

I really enjoy Steve and Dave. They feel like the Old Men of the Sea to me. Old and grizzled TyT veterans.

  4. I have to say im extremely annoyed at how much david takes over the conversation in these post games lol

    1. Dave is the quietest employee at TYT by so much, it is annoying. I remember a recent main show or event where Dave was on, and he said maybe 1-2 sentences for the entire hour. I wanted more!

I absolutely love when Dave speaks, or when there’s a solo post game with just Dave.

I encourage Dave to speak as often as possible. Otherwise Steve will talk too much :P

Jk! I love Steve talking & Malcolm, but Steve talks the most & Dave the least. Malcolm is…IN THE MIDDLE! Really though, ha!

      Love the three amigos.

You three are 1,000x to 10,000x better than any of the M-Th post games. Never miss a Friday Post Game & I’m always sad when Malcolm & Steve can’t make it, but it’s made up for when Dave goes solo.

  5. Regarding changing rules of grammer. I’m 53 so I’ve been witness to over 40 years of changing grammer. It has barely changed in 40 years. Yes, people use a lot of shortcuts in texting and email, but there have always been people taking liberties with grammer. That hasn’t changed the rules of grammer as far as I can see. Steve brought up some obscure cases of dealing with trans people, but this affects a tiny fraction of communication.

    1. It entirely depends on how the generation below Jon/Ana act when they become professionals. Which I think is what Malcolm sees in a lot of the TYT employees like Francis, Hasan, & Hannah.

They speak in a lot of new lingo, slang, and text-speak. The generation after them is probably even more intense in that regard.

If they grow up to become “educated” in “proper English”, then nothing will change. However Milennials don’t even care much about this nonsense. How much more will the generations after them not care? It will likely be significant.

And in 50 years? We are likely to see a lot of what we see in the Netflix series “Black Mirror”. Cyberware & Bioware eyes with cameras & brain implants. At the very least, augmented reality will completely cover our world, even if not implanted.

We may end up in a future where most of language is spoken through pictures, symbols, text, and commercials: all transmitted wirelessly to your brain.

50 years is a long time. Almost 2070.

  6. Alright Steve, you asked for it. I personally was offended when I heard you specifically mentioning that Refugee camps are unsafe and risky to be going to. Steve, just because you have horrors of war taking place in your country and you have no other option but to leave, or you are being persecuted in your own country for your beliefs or orientation does not mean that you would pose a risk for anyone. If refugee camps were ever unsafe it would not be because of the displaced individuals that live there, but it would be because of our policies in keeping them in detention and causing more damage to their well-being by blocking their access to resources and a healthy place of residence. You need to look at these people like your own, and not like criminals.

    1. When did I ever say that refugees were criminals or that refugees were the ones who made the refugee camps unsafe? I never said that. In fact, I’m a very strong advocate for refugee rights and for accepting more refugees right here in the US. My point is that the refugee CAMPS (the CAMPS and not the refugees themselves) may be unsafe. Why? B/c of lack of resources, infrastructure, clean water, medical care, etc. Also, b/c sometimes the camps are targeted by warlords or militias, and getting to and from the camps could be very dangerous. It’s weird and totally unjustifiable for you to think that I’m somehow anti-refugee.

      1. That feel when Steve Oh mentions how he hates issues with grammar and spelling…yet uses “b/c” instead of because. [In case it isn’t obvious, this is meant to be light-hearted]

But I agree with Steve Oh on this one. He has been very clear in the past about his stance on refugees. As an aggressive progressive his stance should be obvious without needing to state it. Great points and it is nice that you have explained yourself even when it was unneeded.

Keep up the good work guys.

      2. I am glad you elaborated on that. Bear in mind that you have all the time in the world. The members support the show so you won’t be hassled to break every other minute and you would have the time to develop your thoughts. It would be great if you had stated these when you were mentioning the fact that the camps are unsafe. Because simply you wouldn’t want to imply in any shape or form that this has anything to do with the refugees themselves. The fact that you put a time aside to write back is very heartening, so thanks.

  7. I used to skip the Friday Postgame nearly every week; If only because the Power Panel skipped it and I didn’t feel like it lived up to the Main Show. Steve, Malcom and Dave have turned it into a real show. I love this. The games, especially. Great stuff.

  8. A racist/not racist question for Old School. Is it racist for Bart to play a bagpipe recording for a story about Scotland having nothing to do with bagpipes?

The whole point of grammar is to make language easily understandable. You have to put a period at the end of a sentence so you know the sentence is over! Obviously tweets don’t count and short comments or texts get a pass. But if you are writing something more than a paragraph, it’s so much easier for other people to read it if you follow the rules of grammar. As for the other grammar mistakes in speech, it is grating to the ears but will probably change over time like the meaning of the words literal and ironic.

  9. I think Lesotho is a tribal thing Malcolm :) Im from South Africa and i dont really even know why theyre their own country though XD

P.S. If anyone else is from South Africa post a comment :D

  10. So what if Cenk enjoys marijuana and wants to share his experiences? you guys hating on him makes you look like a bunch of dinosaurs who have never gotten high(which really makes you the squares for lacking that experience). Btw, the fact that you’ve never experienced a high or done psychedelics in over 30 years gives you ABSOLUTELY NO ROOM to point fun at someone who’s actually experimenting and can relate to the younger generation. But you know what, Steve-oh is not a square at all! Gambling really puts him on the edge!! HA,load of crap, any who ,not as cool as you think you are steve, therefore you have no room to call Cenk a square. Why don’t we stick to news and current events and keep the TYT family out of it? You’re bringing up comments bashing Has, talking crap on Cenk for sharing his experiences with weed, pointing out that Jordan has had problems with others in the company and much more unnecessary garbage that I’m sure most of us do not care for. Love you guys despite your pessimism :)

    1. What??? There shouldn’t be any inside baseball or criticism of Cenk in the Friday PG? That’s like saying there shouldn’t be any naked people in porn.

      1. Yeah, that’s one of the purposes of the Friday Post Game: to rib and poke Cenk a litte, or give constructive criticism. It’s all friendly, good-humored, part of the general back-and-forth at TYT, and perhaps, part of the process of keeping Cenk’s feet on the ground, which is a necessary task carried out by his oldest collaborators.

    2. I think you confuse good-natured teasing with “hating on”. When did anyone ever “hate on” Cenk? We tease him and laugh at him AND with him. I can assure you that Cenk is a big boy and he can handle it just fine. Thank you for your concern for Cenk’s feelings though.

  11. Omg I love that Steve said that. Anytime Cenk and Ana start fanboying over getting high it makes me cringe. It’s so repetitive.

Also for the trip, anyone but Hannah. I just can’t follow her sentence structure.

  12. In regards to Hanc’s question, I think the old guard of corporate-funded Democrats intend to use that very same strategy to defeat the Leftist Democrats. Also, I’m reluctant to trust any of Jimmy Dore’s analysis of the party or the political field since his predictions in the last cycle turned out to be terribly wrong.

On the matter of our language evolving, I’m a millennial, and they’ll have to pry my proper grammar and punctuation from my cold dead hands!

    1. > I’m reluctant to trust any of Jimmy Dore’s analysis of the party or the political field since his predictions in the last cycle turned out to be terribly wrong.

Wrong. Jimmy didn’t make any major predictions – not like Cenk, who occassionally said that Trump was going to win but then abandoned that prediction every time a poll was released (there is video evidence to prove that).

Jimmy said that, if elected, Trump would energize the Left in a way that would never happen under HRC. And that’s happening, though we are at only the beginning of the beginning of that long process. An accurate prediction that came with a proviso (“if” Trump wins).

      1. Jimmy said Clinton would win. She didn’t. Jimmy said Trump would be the destruction of the Republican party. They are the strongest they have been in a hundred years. Jimmy said the Left would unify against Trump. The Democrats are rife with derision and so far no progressives hold any power within the party structure. Jimmy said the Democrats could just filibuster any Trump SCOTUS nominee. The Democrats did, and they still put Gorsuch through.

I’m a fan of Hemingway and Dore, but Jimmy’s predictions so far have been wrong, and sometimes his arguments aren’t as sound as they could be. As he says, he’s “just a jerk-off comedian.” He’s a great progressive, but he’s not infallible.

        1. Jimmy said Clinton would win.

That’s what virtually everyone said (except Cenk and only in those moments where he wasn’t distracted by the opinion polls and following his political instincts, as I mentioned). Everyone was influenced by the polling and the MSM, everyone was explicitly or implicitly giving Hillary a high chance of victory.

So it makes no sense that Jimmy

Jimmy said Trump would be the destruction of the Republican party.

He never made definite predictions about how and when this would unfold (because that’s impossible for anyone to do). And secondly, you’re lifting one individual element from the larger and more important prediction now, which is that Trump would gradually energize the Left, destabilize the political field, and eventually end up providing genuine breaks and ruptures in an unacceptable status quo; ruptures in the Neoliberal Consensus propped up by a fatally detached and completely corrupted establishment.

Things like the filibuster are minor and more specific elements of that prediction, and of course the specifics are much more difficult to predict. The filibuster also matters less than (say) a progressive take-over of the Democratic Party, or the creation of a new party.

And Jimmy certainly never said that this would all unfold in the first four months of Trump’s presidency (of course not, that would have been a ridiculous proposition). It’s early days yet but things in the political field are definitely shifting, the position of all political elites in the world looks less stable, and there are other knock-on effects from Trump. History is back in the saddle again and she is riding again.

Just to mention one thing in practical terms: if Hillary had won, do you think that Cenk and Bernie staffers would ever have co-created Justice Democrats? Cenk would have kept some of his promise to “hold president Hillary’s feet to the fire”, but feebly and increasing less so as time passes. That promise would have slowly fizzled into nothing, and there would have been no plans to “take over the Democratic Party”. More realistically, we’d be back to all the time-wasting, resource-wasting and self-deception that Progressives did for 8 years under Obama. Stuck in a crumbling past full of delusions, not moving forward. Unable to build on the gains made because of Bernie’s insurrection.

In the grand scheme of things, right now, I think we’re exactly where we need to be, with so much to come.

        2. “Jimmy said Clinton would win. She didn’t.”

You’re wrong right here, bud. Jimmy pandered to the rest of TYT which practically required him to say Clinton would win. The entire time I felt a lot of subtlety in the way Jimmy said this, as if he was making it clear he didn’t really believe what he was saying; he just didn’t want to be even more alienated from TYT. At the time there was a lot of tension between Jimmy & TYT, post-primary. Jimmy took a lot of shit…

Until election day. When Trump was then looking like he might win & every moment it became more likely.

You could see all of TYT look to Jimmy. Hours before, Jimmy said Clinton would win np, but you could tell he didn’t actually believe it. And when Trump began winning? Jimmy wasn’t surprised one bit- acting like someone who knew it would happen the entire time. No surprises for him. The rest of TYT was completely stunned.

I saw every minute of coverage during the primary, weeks before election, and election day.

Jimmy kicked everyone’s ass & even Cenk looked to Jimmy to save them. He became the TYT banner that day. It was glorious, considering all the shit he took for months. It even fractured his relationship with Ben. In fact, TYT member’s relationship with Ben was fractured. Fuck that guy. I really dislike Ben after 2016.

“Jimmy said Trump would be the destruction of the Republican party. They are the strongest they have been in a hundred years. ”

First off, the republican party was already destroyed. So when Jimmy said this, he meant it will be the final nail in the coffin.

And he is right. If you think that the Republicans have any chance once the Bernie wing takes over the DNC? Then you’re nuts.

2020 is extremely likely to be the end of both the Republican & Democrat party, with the New DNC, under Bernie/Tulsi/Nina/FDR-democrats having a complete takeover.

I see no other resolution of the 2020 election. Hillary is gone, and the only remaining democrats to run in the primary are progressives. No corporatist can hold them back. Once they win the primary, it’s over in the general election. If Trump is still in office, which I suspect he will be (no matter what), then it’s Progressive vs Trump. It will be a landslide. Maybe even a 50-state landslide.

2018 looks bad for the democrats, but 2020 will have such voter enthusiasm, you may see everything change on election day after Bernie/Tulsi/Nina/FDR wins the primary.

This isn’t a prediction, it’s a guarantee. The only things that can change this is if Trump caves in to the desire to win a second term & gives everyone Medicare for All. That would be enough to make him absolve all his sins. But if Bernie runs? He would still lose. Really, it’s over for Trump in 2020 no matter what. Bafoon.

          1. Jimmy kicked everyone’s ass & even Cenk looked to Jimmy to save them. He became the TYT banner that day. It was glorious, considering all the shit he took for months.

There is no arguing with that. That is why Aggressive Progressives is such a successful show (while All Star Tuesdays, launched around the same time, was cancelled after a half dozen episodes. It wasn’t bad by any means but it didn’t have Jimmy).

  13. I love the Friday post game. My second favorite hour of the week. Aggressive Progressives claims the first spot. But- this is quickly becoming a very close second. WWN is very entertaining AND informative. Love the show.

    1. I will read your comment on the next Friday PG I host with Malcolm and Dave on May 5! I am out of town this week and Malcolm isn’t coming down to LA this week.

  14. The main crew Friday post game has become one of my favorite shows. Always like WWN and TTOTB. Thanks guys and Hi Steve!

  15. Millennial (and fellow Cornell grad!) here to show support for the oxford comma! I admittedly get tripped up with some of the finer points of grammar but I certainly hope society won’t let the basics slip away. Cavemen got their points across too…

When in doubt, consult with”The Elements of Style.” In a perfect world that would be the book in every hotel room drawer. #makeamericaliterateagain

    1. I too love the Oxford comma. I’ll read your comment on our May 5 post game. (Malcolm and I aren’t here this week)

  16. Steve,

    Read this comment next week:

It is so cool you’re reading our comments.

    Evidence: This comment.

  17. canada was designed to be a white only country. when they were under british rule, they had a regulation called the continuous journey regulation.

It came about because the british humanitarian intervention imperial narrative was, “equal within and throughout the empire”. that narrative was used to morally justify taking the natives lands: oh well, now that you are a part of our civilized empire you can have equal rights and can go anywhere!

shockingly, those rights werent fully extended to all groups within the empire so when brown people tried to go to canada they would be turned away through the continuous journey regulation (trudeau recently apologized for the 1914 komagata maru incident that occurred because of that regulation).

It was a way to strip immigration rights to the unwanted by covering their barbarity in the neutrality of western law and technicality. so to placate the disenfranchised, the british created a regulation that would de facto block immigrants from certain parts of the world (they couldn’t just fly to America), albeit guaranteeing a ban.

this legacy is manifested today in the rule you talked about. A rule that amnesty international has condemned as basically a block on immigrants.

We may be the hegemony now, but non-american western countries have (and continue to) committed a shit ton of ignored histories.

  18. So Steve, Malcolm, and David, since you’re all reading the comments-
What are the odds of a Cal Poly double major in Marketing Management and International Business getting an internship at TYT?
Two fields in which you have all mentioned TYT needs to dig into (marketing, and international stories).
Yes this is shameless self promotion. Worth a shot.
Regardless, great show. Love when the three of you are on!

    1. there are people 19-22 working at TYT,it probably has a lot more to do with connections than it does your actual qualifications. And of course personality/interview,

  19. Outstanding show. Though grammar and syntax are bound to change, what will endure is the tendency to judge other people for not following the rules. Twenty or thirty years ago, who would have thought that we would rely so much on text, email, and social media posts for personal and professional communication, and that so much would depend on how a person presents himself or herself (or themselves?) in writing?

  20. Ok, big fucking props to Malcolm for the fake answers he comes up with for Weekly Whirled News. They are always super random and imaginative! Well played sir, well played.

    1. Agreed! Malcolm’s fake answers are excellent and answer D is usually pretty funny. I will read your comment on May 5!

  21. The pronunciation of foreign leaders in TYT clips bothers me. It indicates a lack of intellectual curiosity that the news reader doesn’t take 2 mins to google a news clip from BBC or Reuters to learn the proper pronunciation.

I am a long term viewer of TYT, and on a ‘personal’ level really enjoy most of the on screen staff. And while TYT has come a long way to up its production value, in my mind I still see it as a beer league outfit.

Always love when Cenk’s close friends throw him under the bus. Someone had to say it.

    1. yes, exactly, they never hesitate to make things personal with the rest of their TYT “FAMILY”. Like why don’t you confront Cenk about adoring marijuana like a 15 year old,or read those comments to Has instead of us. Id just love to see you guys do this show with Cenk,Has and whoever else you regularly bring up for no reason there in front of you.

  22. Im suprised not many have mentioned Francis! Soccer unites everybody! It would put smiles across the kids and their families and allow them to momentarily forget whats going on. Plus I like his TYT breakdowns on Facebook. Also, Nomiki and Jordan I think would be more effective and better used here in the States. Hasan Piker!? Really? lol. I like his Breakdowns though. Hanah cant leave John to do Think Tank by himself plus they love each other right? lol

  23. Lol yeah that comment was pretty long. I hope Stan did actually read it though. XD

I was so stupendously amused by the fact that he pronounced my last name PERFECTLY, but misread my first. Literally the inverse of every other time anyone has ever read my name. Lmao

I also like to imagine Dave reading my argument and being immutably nonplussed.

  24. Some of the pronunciation errors on the main show are pretty cringeworthy. I don’t go out of my way to learn the correct pronunciation but it will come eventually if you consume of enough content on the topic. It makes me think they’re so busy that they don’t have time to speak with authority on the big picture of the topic in addition to the finer details.

  25. When it comes to words, I have trouble on whether I should who or whom. A word usage that I find that people use differently is there and they’re, and an example of this is ‘there coming over here’ or ‘they’re coming over here’. I have accepted that my grammar is not always correct which can probably be seen from these preceding sentences so I probably not be so critical of how others create their sentences.

I am in my late 40’s and have decided to try activities that in the past I would have said no to it. One of these is that I went on all male nude camping trip of four days which even two years ago I would have given an emphatic no to doing but now this arctic trip that would have received an automatic yes from me. Steve, you should have said yes to the journey even though it kept you away from your wife and children as this will give you an opportunity that will probably never be available to you again. They would’ve survived your being away, and you would’ve had a story to tell your children and grandchild about something they may never be able to do.

If you need someone to travel there for any reason, I’m willing to fulfil that position, and I have a passport that needs to be active more often.

    Greg.

  26. I hear you, Steve. I can’t stand it when people mangle the English language.

A personal pet peeve of mine is when people say “less” when they mean “fewer”, like when Cenk says something like “there are less refugees in country X than country Y”, although anyone who speaks English as a second language gets a pass.

I want to rip down every grocery store sign that says “10 Items or Less.”

  27. Ironically, it is Swaziland(neighboring country to Lesotho) whose official motto is “We Are A Fortress”, even though being tiny and landlocked still less fully surrounded by one singular country as is the case with South Africa. And the saying is funny. And the Basotho people screwed themselves over now by being so defiant and protective of their distinct culture and territory.

    1. LMFAO I LOLed out loud several times over this, nice one. it’s always the implied joke that gets the most laughs. you implied they must not smoke weed cuz they are so dorky, right? at least that’s how i understood it. when the kicker is left for one to connect, it just makes it so much funnier!
