  1. My favorite man, Francis Maxwell, and my favorite woman, Hannah Cranston on the same show with Cenk?! My lucky day!

  2. There is an entire industry based around women constantly trying to get thin and lose weight. Just look at how many gyms have popped up and how many spend stupid amounts of money on nonsense diets.

Why on earth would they market more plus size models when their whole industry is based on women constantly being insecure?

  3. Thank you for your perspective. I’m sorry you’ve been objectified. For some reason the head scarf really seems to get under Cenks skin…
I live by Dearborn MI, so hijabs are very common to see here. From a few Muslims I’ve talked to metro Detroit is Muslim friendly, but rural Michigan is quite unfriendly. It’s such a shame. Diversity is such a luxury. I’m so blessed to grow up around all different types of people, so I’m not afraid of different.

  4. Cenk, you do realize that 40% of all 18 to 29 years voted for Trump including the absolute majority of white millennial men and women.

This is higher than 20 years ago which means that in 20 years time the % of middle age conservatives will be higher than today.

    1. did they vote FOR Trump? Or did they vote against Clinton? Did they vote to throw a grenade into a system that doesn’t serve them? Did they vote for anything but the status quo?

      1. They voted for Trump because they like Trump.

About the same percentage voted for Romney and the same percentage voted for McCain while Bush Jr. got a smaller margin (especially among women) and in the mid-terms in between the rate is a bit higher for republicans because republicans vote in mid-terms.

Checkout Larry Sabato’s blog as well as the exit polling and the congressional study for all those elections.

Just because you live in a liberal bubble doesn’t mean the numbers are wrong. The level of support for republicans extreme right wing in affluent white suburbs and exurbs in liberal NY and Boston in particular is frighteningly high among young whites there and nearly 75% of all whites live in those areas.

What is even more frightening is the support for the extreme right wing among the Latino middle class and upper middle class (the rich latinos already vote right wing) in “liberal” California.

If progressives keep kidding themselves about how kids are naturally progressive and “know everything” thanks to the internet they should think again.

        1. I have read that, and many many other takes on what happened in this last election. I have a kind of morbid fascination with the post-election post postmortems. There are a lot of conflicting theories. Your source here is just one source of many. It has nothing to do with any bubbles I live in. I’m taking data from all sides on this. It’s conflicting, because we just can’t really know. A lot of it is trying to parse meaning out of big data that maybe is or isn’t there. People make careers on this. Google turned out a bunch of their top talent to parse this data for Clinton’s election team. They were certain she was going to win. She didn’t. The love affair with big data right now is creating a kind of faith-based religion around itself.

But what you’re saying here is somewhat contradictory, because yes it’s true that basically the people who voted for Romney also voted for Trump, but those two candidates offered very different messaging. So, then it’s not that they “like” Trump or Romney for that matter. They were more voting Republican out of pure kneejerk response. That has to do with either family or regional tradition, or overall Republican messaging over the last 40 years. Since Trump was using different messaging than others, it’s probably not that. But it says nothing about how they might respond to alternative messaging were it given a chance. Since Clinton ran on no messaging except her personal resume and “I’m not Trump”, they were left with nothing to vote for. So in that case, people either don’t vote, fall into kneejerk voting patterns or vote for the hail marry blow it all up handgrenade. Some of Obama’s votes came from disaffected conservatives who were disgusted with Bush by 2008.

I agree with you that we should take nothing for granted. Kids are not all naturally progressive. They certainly don’t “know everything”, as the idea of what is true no longer has any meaning. Everyone has a different version of facts now, thanks to universal publishing access. Things are no longer handed down from a central authority, like the Kremlin or the corporate media. Truth is whatever is “trending”. People, not just kids, but all people, do respond to their own plights and messaging that says that people are going to work to get them out of whatever situation they are in. They just have to believe in the message and the messager, and they’ve lost a lot of faith in both corporate parties and their messages. There will be more “blow it all up” people in the coming elections, more “maybe if we’re active we can get something good”, and more “fuck it, I give up” people too. But I think whoever runs in 2020 has a chance if they have a message that’s about something, not just platitudes and lies and corporate finessing. However, I don’t think most people pay much attention at all, whether they’re young or old. Most people (literally more than 50%) are completely tuned out and apathetic and looking for their next good feeling in the immediate moment.

          1. All analysis has a built in bias which is why raw numbers matter, you can’t fake them. Virtually all the post election studies I read from multiple elections (and I am a kind of a statistics geek) show that the raw data were almost identical in their results, the differences were because of sampling errors which naturally occur. The results of those studies are contradictory because of the way they are analysed which is accompanied by a certain level of bias.

As for the big data “cult”, I do agree that it went too far but not when it comes to elections. Cambridge Analytics was central in targeting critical precincts in Michigan and Pennsylvania that sway the vote towards Trump. The republican manipulation of redistricting has made a democratic take over of the House of representatives virtually impossible without an epic wipe-out that happened last time in the 1930s or a more favorable redistricting in Democratic controlled states.

As for who voted for Trump. I think the contradiction is in your statement when you mention that both Romney and Trump had different programs but a few sentences later you mention that people vote based on legacy. The fact of the matter is the vote for Trump and Clinton was largely a legacy vote (94% and 93% of self described Rep. and Dems respectively). What Trump did differently is to energize the base that stopped voting altogether which we saw in counties that saw a double digit increase in turnout but those counties were red anyway so Clinton’s team never factored it in in their calculation to their eventual demise. In the end that energized base was also small, roughly 3% of Trump’s total vote. The rest were going to vote anyway and their pocket book determined which way they went.

The studies above did confirm that there was an element of “fuck it, let’s through a wrench into the system” but it was minuscule and limited to states where Clinton was going to win anyway. It was never large enough to sway elections in a big state. What hurt Clinton the most was the African American vote in both Pennsylvania and Michigan and that is missed by almost all analysis I saw.

A final note, if progressives think they can win elections without compromising they will never win anyway. Republicans turned the entire country red because they compromised. Unfortunately in order to compromise (and by this I mean setting priorities) progressives need to have a clear cut program and there are no two progressives that have a clear cut program.

  5. I LOOVE thick girls. Way more than skinny ones.
Ishkra Lawrence and Ashley graham are way hotter than any other VS model

  6. When I look at advertising with super skinny models, like VS, I just think, well there’s no way to tell whether their clothes would look good on me so I don’t even bother. If they put some bigger models in there, I might give it a try. I’m not even talking plus sized models, just a little bigger than the incredibly skinny models they use.

  7. Victoria’s Secret comment: Why is skinny in now and it didn’t use to be? I know. It’s because it is really about social standing. Back in the day fat meant you had means because most ppl didn’t have enough food to eat. Now, cheep food makes you fat and skinny is achieved with surgery (in the case on models, not real skinny women), So you need money to be thin. ie. sexy is “who is the rich one”

  8. BM3RACER

DO YOU APPLY THE SAME LOGIC TO WHITE PEOPLE? THEY’RE NOT RACIST UNLESS CONVICTED OF A HATE CRIME? BECAUSE I’VE GOT A LOT OF EXAMPLES OF TYT BREAKING YOUR OWN LOGIC.

  9. This is inappropriate as hell but here I go anyway: If that 17 yr old is wearing a hijab to be less sexy, it isn’t working. That is the most beautiful young woman I have ever seen. But on the less obnoxious side, I totally agree with Cenk. I want the hijab to go away, but I want it to happen because women get liberated, not because anyone MADE them that it off.

  10. MAGPEPPER

IM ACTUALLY AMAZED LOL AT FIRST I WAS BEING ALL POLITE AND PUTTING SOME ASTERISKS IN BETWEEN MY WORDS BUT I SAID FUCK IT, WHY NOT JUST SAY NIGGER? THE NEGLECT AND QUALITY OF THIS SITE AND COMMENT SECTION THEY DONT SEEM TO CARE. EITHER WAY, ONE ACCOUNT SHALL FOLLOW AFTER ANOTHER.

THEIR NEEDS TO BE ONE VOICE IN HERE THAT CALLS OUT THE RACIST NIGGERS AND TOWELHEAD JIHADI MUSLIMS!

  11. Dealing with the Hijab is an iffy issue. For example: Slaves were forced to where chains and eventually are freed. However, society pressures them in to wearing chains anyway. Would it be worth giving people the right to wear chains (because they liked them) over allowing people who are forced to wear chains the remove them? I think it would be worth polling the people that are subjected to the hijab to see if they would be willing sacrifice their freedom to free women who are forced to wear it.

  12. Hey TYT moderators,
Is there any way to ban the person who used the n-word in three posts?
I know he’s – for some reason – paying 10 bucks a month to say it, but he’s batshit bonkers.

    1. speed·ball
      ˈspēdbôl/
      noun – informal
a mixture of cocaine and heroin.

Well, his username certainly checks out.

        1. The answer is actually “Undefined” as they call it in academia. No number can go into zero any times ever, even an infinite amount of that number.

  13. Doesn’t Victoria’s Secret use prison slave labor to make their clothing?

    So, wtf VS?
Is orange really the new black?

  14. Most all religions have one thing in common … CONTROL YOUR WOMEN.

Now people will say, it is certain cultures, or that women actually have “very important roles” in some religions, but that’s not how it plays out in the real world.

    Control, control, control.
Religions want to control men as well, but who are the ones in charge of deciding what rules to follow & how?
    Men.

  15. GUYS WHAT DO YOU THINK, IS TODAY FINALLY GOING TO BE THE DAY THE YOUNG TURKS CALL A NIGGER RACIST???? I MEAN I KNOW THEY HAVE NEVER DONE IT AND EVEN AFTER MICAH JOHNSON, VICTOR FLANNAGIN, BATON ROUGE, CHICAGO 4 TORTURE THEY HAVE NEVER CALLED ANY OF THEM RACIST BUT I MEAN GOD DAMN.

HOW THEY GONNA SPIN FRESNO? THEY WONT BLAME ISLAM, THEY WONT BLAME RACISM??? I HOPE WE DONT GO EASY OUT AND CLAIM ATTENTION AND MENTAL ILLNESS…. NO NO NO! I HOPE WE GET FAIR COVERAGE JUST LIKE WE DID FOR DYLAN ROOF. I MEAN THIS MAN CLEARLY DTATED HIS INTENTIONS OF HATRED FOR WHITE PEOPLE!

I HOPE THIS IS THE DAY WE FINALLY HEAR THEM CALL A NIGGER RACIST! BECAUSE NIGGERS ARE RACIST TOO!

    Ps:
FUCK THE NORE I READ ABOUT THIS RACIST NIGGER…. HE LOVED HIM SOME AFRICAN NIGGER NATIONALISM FLAGS. REMEMBER GENK DID A VIDEO ON THE FLAG THAT DYLANN ROOF WORE. IT WAS A SOUTH AFRICAN GROUP. I HOPE WE GET THE SAME LEVEL OF COVERAGE FOR THIS NIGGER RACIST.

IF WE DONT ARE YOU REGRESSIVES GOING TO CONDEMN IT. IF GENK OR WHOEVER ELSE DOESNT CALL THIS NIGGER A RACIST ARE ANY OF YOU REGRESSIVES GOING TO CALL OUT THE DOUBLE STANDARD AND THE FUCKING BIASED (beyond progressive) AGENDA AT TYT. THIS WILL BE A FUCKING TRAVESTY IF THEY DONT COVER THIS OR CALL THIS NIGGER A RACIST!!!

    1. IT ONLY MAKES SENSE TO CALL A BLACK MAN RACIST IF HE IS CHARGED AND CONVICTED FOR A HATE CRIME, CUZ BLACK RACISM AGAINST WHITES IS NOT COMMON, ALTHOUGH IT EXISTS. SO, WHEN THE LAW IS ABLE TO VERIFY SUCH A THING, IT SHOULD BE CALLED RACIST. REMEMBER WHITE PEOPLE LOOK DOWN ON BLACK PEOPLE CUZ THEY SEE THEM AS INFERIOR AND UNHUMAN. BLACK PEOPLE DON’T SEE WHITES LIKE THIS, SO BLACK RACISM IS USUALLY A MANIFESTATION AGAINST WHITE RACISM.

    2. Just FYI – most people see all Caps posts, and by default just ignore it. I mean thanks for making it easier for us to ignore your trolling, while also supporting independent Journalism with your membership.

Also, it’s kind of entertaining how none of your sentences make any sense… hahaha not even remotely. Maybe if you pay the producer level you can talk face to face with Cenk about how you’re super progressive and working toward making America a better place by getting all the brown-ish people who sell ice cream (I believe that’s an old school reference) out and using the n-word gratuitously.

  18. I’m a Saudi and would to give you my insight about the Saudi girl story.

This girl’s family are really rare, we call and describe them as open “an open family” were most of the time it haves a bad connotation to it. usually families that go out of the country are “open”. also there a lot families that would punish the girl if she showed her face by wearing a hijab, they have to were a niqab and there are some extremist that will have them wear cloves too.

another point, it could be fake, as the father didn’t send it. also were the father say love in the text that means there westernized, because saying love or i love you is not a Saudi thing. we even describe our selfs as “emotionally dry” and especially fathers.

so basically what I’m saying is families like her’s are very rare.

    1. Thats your opinion though. Its difficult to judge when you are inside the Saudi Arabia. We’re all familar with the sudden dress change on flights to/from Saudi Arabia, and how different Saudi men and women will dress whether they are in Riyadh or Paris, New York or even Dubai. The hundreds of thousands of free scholarships in foreign studies offered over the past 17 years have changed things. Let us know how Six Flags works out.

        1. Six Flags is an American amusement park company. They’re planning to build a park in Riyadh by 2021.

    2. MAYBE that’s rare in Saudi, but that is not rare at all throughout the muslim world. i lived in turkey for many years and could not name or witness or even hear of a single instance where a female was forced to wear a headscarf. in fact it was discouraged, because in turkey ppl who wear scarfs are seen as narrow or backward minded etc.

  19. I used to wear a hijab but I can’t anymore because I fear for my life. Racial attacks have increased more and more since the Syrian war and now especially because Trump is president. That being said if Western culture became less ignorant I would definitely go back to it, despite not even being a Muslim anymore… I see where Cenk gets his perspective, but frankly man you are not a woman, how would you know what is helpful to their lives or self image? You don’t know what it is like being constantly harassed about how pretty you are, or having your looks eclipse anything else you have to offer in a workplace. I always relished that my thoughts and work ethic shone before my appearance and that what I had to offer was at the forefront of the impression I gave to people. I actually resent the way I live now because I feel constantly objectified and continuously have to put people in their place for inappropriate advances. That has been my experience and I don’t think a Westerner, let alone a man, has any right to judge that. I don’t go around judging Western women, I just don’t appreciate commentary on my life. I’m not “clutching to culture”, I’m not even Muslim anymore, I just feel comfortable with clothing on my head, nothing that special about me or anyone else who does it. It’s just another way out of the plethora of options for women to present themselves to the world, and some people just feel more comfortable like that.

  20. There is a difference between being secular and being anti-religion. Its not up to Cenk to pass judgement on who internalized what or tell them what to wear. I can accept the culture/family pressure/peer pressure explanation for why someone would internalize wear this in a muslim majority country. But the fact is (fact not your opinion man), in the west the culture and societal pressure (in the form of stares, criticism and in your face disapproval) is so strong that only those fully committed would be able to continue. I really don’t see how this is any more weird than people who claim God talks to them or saying “tide goes in, tide goes out, no one knows why!”
