I’m sorry but Nomiki or Jordan (with Emma V) should be the only ones considered out of them. Jordan has so earned it, but I’m thinking Nomiki, because Jordan has more than made his mark already and it would be cool for Nomiki to kinda carve out her own project like this. TYT should put its best talent out there that’s all I’m saying.
You should send Amna Nawaz
Oh, she doesn’t work for TYT?
Fix that.
Steve, I don’t particular like ThinkTank, nor do I ever watch it.
However I think that Hannah doing a video on “A day in the life of a refugee teenager” vs a privileged teenager, would be FANTASTIC!
Here’s Member#153’s picks:
1) Hannah – For the refugee teen story & the refugee teens would LOVE her.
2) Francis – Because it sounds like he’d actually make kids happy. The world loves soccer.
3) Jordan – Because he does deserve it. Idk what his story would be, but it would kick ass. Maybe too serious though.
I think a combo of Hannah & Francis would be perfect. If you could send two.
Hasan isn’t yet mature enough to host the main show, and can be rude without I think realizing it. I just don’t think he’d be ready for this.
LOL, good luck with the decision, it’s not going to be easy!
Oh, and this thing about trump not meeting the science kids? Fuck ’em, he’s such a dolt.
That was actually a good PG even without Malcolm giving it structure. Dave got to talk a little more than usual.
Obviously everyone is super motivated to go so putting everyone except Has’ name in a hat and picking that way might be OK. Has needs to be given less to do, not more.
I got a kick out of how happy Steve was over Kelly’s comment.
If this were a question I’m all for Frances, nomiki, or even Has going. However, I don’t think this is even a question.
Jordan clearly deserves this assignment. These people are not in make up camps, they’re not in fashion camps, they’re in refugee camps. I don’t want a fluff piece for everyone to pat themselves on the back with later, I want the truth. Give me the straight dope. Did you see the town hall Jordan did in Flint?? Jordan not only gives you clear, honest, easily digestible context; he also gives the people a voice. These refugees don’t need makeup tutorials as much as they need a voice and a platform.
Jordan has spent months knee deep in human suffering and injustice, sticking up for the little guy and giving them a microphone. I gotta be honest if I were in his place I wouldn’t have the energy to go abroad and cover the same thing on a level I can’t even comprehend. But Jordan is still chomping at the bit. WAH SEEK T’ LAHN. That’s the drive of a man who seeks to exercise his purpose.
Don’t tell me you would have started a journalism drive with such a lofty goal if Eric, Emma, and Jordan hadn’t exploded tyt politics to 100,000+ subscribers in less than six months. I also understand the timing of its launch being perfect, but come on. Jordan indisputably played a pivotal role in the proliferation of TYT’s brilliant investigative journalism outfit.
Jordan deserves this more than anybody else.
I love every single one of the candidates who showed interest. I think Nomi would also be great and she’s inarguably qualified. Francis has one of my favorite perspectives of the TYT contrubutors. Hannah is brilliant. I’ve even really been coming around to Has lately and he would actually be my second choice, but I’m not about to make that argument because I don’t think this is a question.
Jordan is clearly the best fit for this assignment.
I would love love love to see Jordan there. He’s killer. Start A Poll!
I’m very excited for John but also sad because this means he won’t be on the main show for at least a month! :( Nooo!
Gin without juice?
For the Refugee story I think temperament is the deciding factor. I speak as a former Refugee from a civil war and last thing I wanted to see was someone who’s too inquisitive or flamboyant. Keep in mind these people have been through and are still in a traumatic situation. Adult’s are hyper-protective and children are scared yet still curious about things they are not familiar with. It’s a bit Darwinian as you can almost sense the survival of the fittest mentality that permeates but is not spoken of. Pretty much the people have stories and the reporters have to be good listeners … the story will formulate itself once you listen long enough. Remember the end product ought to be solutions for these distraught people anything else is exploitative so it is important to listen to the problems they perceive and you know some attention could solve.
Some examples are work permits, travel bans, education for the children (the lost generation is usually the kids who lose out on education), what do they think is a solution to there plight (often media hones in on things like regime change when those caught in a civil war only care about bread), security is another big issue in Refugee camps as well as bribery. If you’re looking for a “get” it’s the NGO’s that leave biggest dissatisfaction mainly because of limited resources that end up for the people if you want to be original then follow that money and you might see how like a 3rd of NGO spending is on security of personnel or how a network of bribery might be part of the logistics … I’m not saying it’s bad just saying it seldom is covered how inefficient the process is or how the UN program almost at times feels like a make work effort for bureaucrats so the incentive is to keep the refugees flowing. Another “get” is police abuse from the host nation … they treat the refugees as sub-humans at times so a refugee always has a story of abuse by the police or security personnel.
Hassan is a no mainly because he looks like the mark you steal a passport from (if in Syrian camps because he looks like them) and his Turkish background although an asset is also an anchor (in some areas Turks are loved and others they are despised) as well as his demeanor with those rings is a bit too flamboyant. Sending Hannah or Nomiki is a good thing because they can get near the women and young girls as well as some men I think it’s a toss up between Francis and Jordan. Kenya is Somali refugees (what I was) and Al-Shabaab is quite active these days and they blend into the Refugee camps as they are nomadic people; it’s probably the same in Lebanon but the security situation with Syrian refugee camps is far superior to the Kenyan ones just due to neglect brought on by length of the conflict (Somalia has been more than 2 decades so security is pretty lax). Hassan coincidentally would be a hit in the Somali refugee camps since Turkey is big Somali supporter and has saved many millions of Somali’s from the 2012 drought so long as security is very good otherwise Shabaab is still a threat.
Hope the insights are helpful. Also John going to the North Pole … the King of the North lives! Are any Government sponsorships involved? Italy, US, Canada, Russia, Greenland, Denmark?
Dave thinks bobbing around in icy water won’t make you seasick…lol. There is one true cure in my opinion and that is cannabis. That is the only way I go out salmon fishing or crabbing with my brother. Now you can vape… do edibles..
Francis or Hannah.
Steve you ARE super adorable… I love that you’re the brains of the business end but also an AGRESSIVE PROGRESSIVE !
RE: refugee camp – I totally agree with LucaRavaglia’s comment above about Hassan – you can’t send him, it would be a terrible disservice to such a serious topic – he just doesn’t have the life experience to give it the respect and sensitivity that story deserves. Hannah is the same – too young and lacking in serious experience.
I’m torn between Jordan and Nomiki… I think you need to give it someone who is already one of the TYT Politics reporters – I would actually LOVE for it to be Dylan Ratigan but his name wasn’t mentioned.
You got my name read on the air during Post Game show by including in your comment, glad you feel the same way
Steve– interesting re: the Jordan Chariton quote you cherry-picked to represent his thinking/interest in the project. Somehow I doubt that remark would have been the only thing that this articulate man had to say?
It was also interesting, during all the fundraising, that supporters were told “more Jordans” could be purchased with donations. Jordan has been uniquely successful in his journalist endeavors, and has acquired quite a following (seemingly without even seeking fame), because of his passion for exposure and dissection of injustice.
It is hard to even locate feeds of all of the new people on your website, as they’re not yet posted in a logical or categorical way that makes sense to a searching member.
Frankly, your representation of all the TYT employees seemed unprofessional. Good thing you are not an agent. All of this makes me wonder if you (and others) might be harboring some professional jealousy of Jordan, which would be both sad and unfortunate for tyt.
What’s your deal? You think someone’s appearance is more important than their substance? It’s fine to have preferences among TYTs but your comment is just out there to be cutting and mean. I’ve heard great point of facts from Hasan and appreciate the different perspective he brings to TYT; just like I enjoy enjoy Brett, Ana, Asher, Cenk and pretty much everyone else except for the salty guy on Aggressive Progressives.
Whoever you pick, don’t let it be Hasan….he would be so out of touch with a refugee situation. Imagine him there wearing all his obnoxious rings and jewelry bragging about his Twitter and Facebook pages, total fail.
I was going to say Jordan for sure first but changed my mind.
This seems like something that should be fun for the refugees for the 2 days they get to interact with TYT and thats why I would pick Hannah and Francis if only one Francis.
Because Francis would at least have fun with some of the refugees with soccer and it could either turn into a fluff piece or a fluff piece that turns into serious after they play they can see the conditions and stuff or just focus on the fluff.
Hannahs idea for a day in the life of a refugee would be great over the course of a few days and again would show some fluff but ultimately if done right could be a very serious story but at least with some non serious moments to soften the story.
everybody elses ideas are great but those stick with me as far as something that could be fun for the refugees and also test hannah and francis for going out in the field and strengthen them as reporters.
I was rooting for Jordan initially but hes already got a ton of exposure and hass needs a few years to calm down his ego. nomi is great but she just started so its not really fair to the others that have been here for years if they really want to go.
also i see jordan as more of a tough story kind of guy really and this should be in my opinion be a fluff/serious story. thats why I choose hannah and francis.
Loved this post game.
Send Francis!
I think you should go with what another comment said: have TYT members vote. So far though, by what Google is asking for, they want to shine a light into a dark place, so Francis and soccer are a great pitch. Plus he’s charismatic and he’s been getting better with talking so we all understand him (no shade, Francis. English is my second language so I know that feel). I want you to send Darth Draedel (nvr4getting that one Jordan lol) but I think, while I don’t deny he will do a good job, a stronger pitch than “I have seniority”. I know he’s a strong journalist, and his work ethic is great, but what are you bringing to the kids/refugees to show a different side?
Again: TYT members can vote so less pressure
So if “Aspiration Bank” fucks its customers or turns out to be a criminal organization, money launderer, etc., and is now a TYT sponsor, can I trust you to report honesty about that? What about other companies owned by the owners of Aspiration Bank? When they have some other company or group they own, and THEY don’t want Cenk and Anna and company to say a certain thing… will you have the courage to say it?
You’ve sold out, TYT. You’ve taken money from someone who ISN’T an individual listener or a viewer, but accepted money that didn’t come from any flesh and blood human. You’ve done this in between talking about how money corrupts politicians, how corporations owning news companies makes those companies useless in their capacity of enabling the electorate to make good decisions…
I paid to be a member because I thought you were different from all the other, useless corrupt media groups, but you’ve sold out, so…
Goodbye TYT.
Choose someone who will do the most for the people actually in the camp -from what you said, francis sounds like he will lift the spirits of the kids there and have some fun!
Great show, guys :D
Nomiki or Jordan for the refugee camp project, but NOMI really sounds perfect for this, all things considered.
I need clarification on something.. Steve Oh says at 7:29 that John is single.. However a few post games back John made reference to “my girlfriend Arelene”.
A friend of mine have a bet that him and Hannah are in love and have been together since ThinkTank.
hmmmm i noticed that too!
John does have a girlfriend. He’s taken photos with her on his Instagram. I’m assuming that Steve probably meant John was “single” in terms that he’s not married.
PLEASE CONTINUE WITH THE REFUGEE CAMPS, we need more international reporting, i love it, thank you!!
Steve and Dave, you guys have no sense of real adventure!!! That trip to the arctic sounds FREAKEN AWESOME,! One month is nothing, and the time would pass pretty quickly, next thing you know your back in ‘the world’ having to deal with regular life again ( and Trumps corrupt cess pool)… wow
I think you should make a poll and let each person who wants to go to a refugee camp state their case in a video and let the viewers vote. This takes the burden off you Steve.
Agree!
I think Dave is right. You will get more info from google to make your choice clear. It seems that the staff there can see your heart Steve, and you are a fair boss. Everyone will get their opportunities at interesting assignments.
I also find it completely exciting that TYT is sought out for these opportunities. Your audience is curious about the world and are enthusiastic about the doors that are being opened to your company. Keep grabbing these opportunities.: information empowers us all.
I love the Friday post games with Steve seeing the inner workings of decisions make us members feel that the are in a board meeting we are all invested in this amazing project and I thank you for that!
The banking situation for everyday use in the United States sounds woeful. Having to pay fees if you don’t use the right ATMs? Having to pay a monthly fee for giving a bank the privilege of holding and using your money to enrich itself?
For a bit of context, in the UK around 95% of ATMs have multi-bank agreeements, meaning that virtually every bank’s cards are taken and free of charge. In terms of ‘checking account’ (‘current account’ here), there are those banks that offer fee-based services, which include perks like insurance, personalised cards etc, but in the main accounts are currently being offered that pay the customer ÂŁ5 a month, rather than the customer paying for privilege of holding their cash somewhere other than under their pillow.
Steve,
I’d send Jordan and Hannah. Jordan is a pro at these types of things and Hannah has co-hosted the main show and is really good at it. I’ve love to see what she does if she goes.
PLEASE KEEP SPENDING MY MONEY. VERY NICE ADVENTURES PLANNED. Steve will pick the right person.
Maybe John will see my comment, I think he’s so handsome and he’s such a good host with great commentary and insight. I love his passion for reading/science and that he’s a nerd. Swoon. Husband goals. Hmu John! I’ll miss him so much while he’s in Antarctica!
I’d love to see Frances teach kids soccer in Kenya! That sounds super uplifting.
Great Friday Postgame. Dave and Steve are key reasons. I can see the virtues of each and all the TYT staff members mentioned for the refugee story.
I say either Nomiki or Jordan. Both are seasoned reporters who will do a great job.
Yo. fucking love the Iadarola Expedition
Choosing who should go….is there a way someone from the camp can choose? If they have an idea of the type of approach for the media shot maybe they have a preference of who gets to come. Just an idea.
I would love to do the arctic trip with John. I assume that the insurance cost is probably massive for the arctic trip plus the refugee camp reporting.
Cannot wait till John sees his first Polar Bear and freaks the fuck out!
steve, aspiration is not a bank, its an investment firm.
Steve, since you asked, I believe Hasan would be the best TYT person, out of those who have expressed an interest, to cover the refugee stories. Haters are going to hate, but Hasan would be a nice looking man with an interest and knowledge in style and beauty that would complement the other beauty angle coverage. If the refugees are going to get a beauty break from the drudgery of the camps, give them someone who can appreciate and articulate that well, and make them feel good. That may sound shallow, but it sounds like it might fit with what you had said about the other coverage. Also, Hasan has done quite a few well researched and passionately presented issue videos on Facebook. When Hasan prepares as he does for those videos, he shines as a serious journalist. Lastly, if Jordan wants to play the “I’ve paid my dues/seniority card,” I can’t help but agree with that argument. Jordan would be a great live news reporter, and Hasan would be a great feature story or issue produced video reporter. In a perfect world you could send both of them. Sorry, this is probably a bit long and more than you were looking for in feedback. ~from Carla (John’s wife and TYT member) a journalism aficionado.
I disagree. Please don’t send Hasan!! I agree that he is putting in an effort but I feel he is still very much trying to promote himself rather than promoting the story and cause. I think his ego would hurt the story. It may be a good trip for his personal development but it may lead to a less compelling report.
I think Hannah lacks the depths and experience to cover the refugee crisis, even with a more social angle. I am not sure she will be tough enough for the job.
I find Nomiki’s and Francis’ pitches the most appealing. I think Nomiki would do a better job just because she is a seasoned reporter and knows how to get a good story, but Francis’ soccer idea is lovely and fits the concept very well, too.
I love Jordan and I do believe that he would be more than capable. If he could find a more interesting angle than just “I have done similar things before, I can do it again”, I would love to give it to him. But Nomiki’s and Francis’ ideas are stonger right now.
Strongly against sending Hasan or Hannah. Hasan comes off too proud/egotistical. Hannah is too pretty and young and superficial for this assignment. My opinions of course! And they reflect my older age, I’m sure–I’m not into the fluffy stuff.
I like Francis’ idea the best and I think he would easily break through cultural barriers and leave them with something valuable..
It might seem sexist to say, but I would send a male before a female. A lot of cultures are sensitive to the way American women behave and dress, etc.–not saying it’s right, but it is what it is. Could be a distraction.
Francis is topping my list, but I can honestly say that I’d love to either see Hasan or Hannah as well. When I started watching TYT I wasn’t a fan of either Has or Hannah, but having seen Hannah a few times on the main show and Hasan’s Breakdown videos, I can say that I really do like their perspectives and that I find it refreshing to look beyond somebody’s image or surface personality to understand who they are underneath. The refugee camp trip might be a great experience not only for them, but also for the TYT audience.
Seriously? No emojis yet. Those ?s are lol
I see you, Gigi ????
For the refugee trip send Nomiki and Jordan!
I think it makes most sense to send Francis or Naomiki.
Don’t do it John! Send Hasan :}
Topic 1 – THANK YOU for the FDIC info Steve Oh! I was wondering that when Cenk was talking about it on the regular show. :) appreciate the info – am thinking of going with them – but my accountant self is just eeeeeehhhhhhhhhh leary… lol ;) Also if TYT does it.. I will too!! :)
Topic 2 – JOHN is going to the North Pole??? THAT is so freaking cool, what an opportunity!! You are a good boss dude!!! Seriously!!! TYT is going to the North Pole, AMAZING!!! Yes you need to pay John extra – 10K is reasonable I guess, maybe?? He is taking his life in his own hands here. Oh and he will need a week vacation too!! ;)
Topic 3 – Well you need to figure out soon… BTW, I like Hannah’s approach and NOW I actually want to see it happen. I think it could be really effective in changing some young minds about refugees – that’s a really good idea. (I don’t watch Pop Trigger – I’m 42 so it ain’t bias here) Jordan does deserve it, but maybe he deserves a vacation more?? Jordan needs an angle… Frances (I don’t watch TYT sports and don’t have any special attachment to Frances other than loving his accent) had a good angle as well, and isn’t soccer really big everywhere?? Hasan, well I think his angle just isn’t as effective – he’s hot and he scolds Tomi Lahren hard, but I just don’t think the angle of it could have been me here is that great. Ana saying this was my family once, would be more effective than this could be me, but it’s not. And the new reporter Nomi, well we need her investigating shit here in America, ins’t that the reason we/you hired her??? JMO
Topic 4 – Obituaries – interesting and I like that you highlight people like this. I find out some weird and interesting stuff. :) HAHAHA Steve Oh, my kids also watch it, and I remember hearing them watch that one!! :)
Topic 5 – Bragging about our kids is natural!! :) That’s so awesome about these girls!! :) That doesn’t surprise me about Trump – totally not surprised. It is disappointing in a way, but still at least they don’t have to put up with him.
Topic 6 – hahahah cute. Steve Oh I knew that you are wicked happily married. :) So cute. SO SO CUTE
<3 Great show
Hi Steve!
Honestly you should just pick names out of a hat. That’s the fairest way I can think of.
Cheers!
