I guess this ny college plan would also rule out students that would like to go to grad school too, since very often the correct grad school is out of state.
Tuition-free college is overhyped in general. Tuition is about $6,000 per year in New York. Fees, direct and indirect, are around $6,000 and room/board is $12,590 per year…and room and board are necessary for almost everyone because most state schools are upstate where most people don’t live. Commuting isn’t possible. Has to be a better way.
People saying ‘well I guess you learned a lesson about taking these photos’ or ‘what did they expect taking those photos’ is so outrageous. I saw those types of things said a lot also when the story came out about that gross secret Facebook page of the female Marines.

Here in Indiana I have been on my own since I was 17 . My overly religious parents only started to talk to me once I had a daughter. My parents my plenty of money (to my Dads credit having worked himself through school while providing for our family) but never have provided any funding to my higher education because I refused to attend a Christian college. Yet their income has just until recently determined my financial aid… and this is not an uncommon thing in my area. Their is a spike in atheism in the millennial generation here among traditionally hyper religious families. So one could easily understand how common this story is in an area where Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches are the norm.
SIDE NOTE;
I also suggest if anyone doesn’t understand what Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches stand for or the crazy shit they teach their children…. look into it and it will give you a greater drive to maintain the separation of church and state.
You guys are making the common mistake that all of NY state is expensive. NYC is very different from the rest of the state. I know many families that make under $100,000 that will benefit from this program. Of course it’s limited and we want more, but we’re very pleased for this to be the start of something greater.
How come, you call yourselves “Land of the free” if you have a law allowing to banish people from towns!? WTF!? I though Poland is weird, but USA beats us to the punch.
Thank Ana for bringing up what your parents make not meaning they can/will help you. When I went to school my mother made a decent amount (considering she was a teacher) but was not on speaking terms with me and said she would not give me one penny for college. I lost out on a scholarship because when they said I had to show both my parent’s income she flat out refused to give the information or even discuss it. My father and I fought with them for MONTHS over why I was losing out on a scholarship because my mother who was not speaking to me might make a certain amount of money. No go. Now I don’t want to throw a pity party my mother and I have made up blah blah blah but it just goes to show that there are so many other factors than just “your parents make x” and there is no way to work around them. If college was just effin affordable those factors wouldn’t matter.
For the tuition costs in some of these schools we would expect alabaster halls and verdant gardens…..blah blah blah and one should expect after graduation pay grade of Hollywood proportions.
