(To IrishPeter:) To clarify :
Cenk is pro unions, against all influential big money in politics .
He is pro capitalist, and in favor of r regulations to help consumers, workers, and the planet.
TYT is his private organization. It’s how he makes his living. It’s also checked by progressive morals and principles.
The fund drive is so that he can independently hire investigative journalists/production teams.
He is very much open and transparent about all of this.
Non of this is disingenuous or inconsistent.
I hope this cleared up your issues
I’m pretty sure the guy laughing in that body slam video is laughing at how potentially fucked this cop is since he got it on video.
I am a subscriber to TYT and understand why they need paying members to survive. I am however disillusioned by their fund-drive to hire reporters who will after all be working for a private for profit corporation. It seems hypocritical to me that Cenk turns to members to finance what is after all his private enterprise. TYT is not a non-profit organization. If he was someday to sell TYT would he reward those members who’ve donated to its success?
He has also on occasion said that he agrees fundamentally with capitalism and seems to be lukewarm on the subject of unions, views I strongly disagree with. On the other hand I find most of the political content covered on TYT to be very relevant and important and think he does an excellent job breaking down complex issues but find the fund drives somewhat mercenary and a little disingenuous. I had to get this off my chest.
It’s common knowledge that people at TYT don’t make a lot of money. Because TYT isn’t swimming in money. Partly because of how little money advertisers pay online. They take a low salary because of ideological reasons [my guess] – they want to be a part of the important things TYT brings to the political media landscape. Cenk wants to get more things done than they can do with only the money they make from ad revenue and membership. People have long screamed about how TYT should do investigative reporting – and this is how they manage to do that, fulfilling the wants of many members (by having willing people pay for what they want). Do you have any better suggestions on how to hire a bunch of people to do good work without having the money for it? The only thing I think is weird about it is the fact that this is a one-time drive, and hiring someone is a continuous expense if you want them to continue working. That part I don’t really see the logic behind.
Are you so sure about that? Have you explored the net worth of Cenk or Ana? I have complained about this before, but they are far from poor or destitute while easily in the top 1% of Americans.
To be in the top 1%, you need to have a household income of $450,000 per year
SOURCE: http://money.cnn.com/calculator/pf/income-rank/ [**other sources give a similar number**]
IMHO, it seems highly unlikely that either one makes that much $money$.
The FED data doesnt put it nearly that high… plus the estimation can be based on net worth or income etc… there is a fair amount of info that suggests 120-150K puts one right up there… 100K-1 million is in top 7% apparently… in the latter at least they both exceed the high end categorization…
> while easily in the top 1% of Americans.
What? No, of course not.
For 2 million dollars they are hiring 4 teams of investigative reporters. Not for 6 months, not for a year, not for a year a half, not for 2 years, but as long as it remains financially viable.
They hired 1 and stretched him thin. Does he help bring in views? Yeah definitely. Does he justify spending 2 million dollars on hiring 10-20 more people for annual salaries?
I think this drive is getting them 20 new people hired on. Let’s say they’re all making 50k, that’s going to be 1 million dollars. So half of the fund drive is all used up. I doubt they are working for 25-30k a year, so I think 50k is reasonable. I doubt they are making 100k a year, and if they are, there goes ALL the money from the drive for 1 year and that’s without buying ANY equipment. No company vehicles, no company cameras, no company wireless data plans, and satellite feeds, no travel expenses, not anything.
The point of the drive is to gauge demand. If people want to pre-order investigative reporting then TYT will fund the rest of it. They don’t know how much the demand truly is, and putting your money where your mouth is, is the best way to gauge interest, excitement, and feasibility. They did a cost benefit analysis, because if you like TYT the last thing you want them to do is aspire to grow and then collapse under their own weight.
If you don’t like it, don’t donate.
In the interest of being capitalist I believe it is particularly justified to crowdsource. I love the fund drive and think it’s especially important that we have more reporters covering real issues in this increasingly negative and veiled climate.
Agreed :>)
While I generally agree (and disagree with macberg), you must admit it takes money to run a business. I think Cenk is just taking a page from Bernie on this one. If a network takes big corporate money and advertising, there is a good chance they could drive the content too, which is against the point of TYT. Yet they do have some corporate connections, I think they use the funding from viewers because there isnt really a realistic alternative since the workers need to be paid. I dont like it called a “donation” though… I prefer to think of it in business terms: I am paying for a service, such as exclusive content, or investigative journalism, which they seem to be trying to provide, and without advertising…
I agree that the current TYT business model is far too capitalist but it is the only realistic option at the moment. When you’re going up against forces as large as the MSM and the political establishment, then your main goal is survival. Internal organization and ownership issues must take a backseat to that.
TYT is most definitely not a “non-profit”. That term has very specific definition, and an NPO varies widely from what TYT is today or has ever been.
TYT is possibly more closely defined as (partially/mostly) crowd-funded, and this sits quite easily within the capitalist ethos. Cenk (and any other owners/investors) are building a brand, offering a service (subscription-based plus monitizing content on other platforms such as YouTube), and employing a staff. The dictionary definition of a small business. He may at some point divest and sell. Hopefully he can turn a profit.
As a subscriber I am buying access to the content, not buying stock. I do not expect any profit-share if/when TYT is sold.
Ana is good at social issues, but John runs circles around her political analysis. I get that Ana has been around longer, but seniority does not mean you are better. And, John is one of the best out there so this is no slight to Ana.
Please let John lead all political segments going forward. I love Ana, but the political analysis is flat — lots of emotion in voice and tenor, but nothing new is being said. We are TYT — you have to dig deeper than what was said yesterday. And, the idea of Ana providing context for one of John’s stories is funny.
I will say that the recent story Ana did “The REAL reason why Evangelicals support Trump” was genius.

Perhaps the issue is preparedness rather than ability.
Yeah last night I was trying to watch my paid member content and was unable to because of what? The long description? Come on tyt dudes, please get it up as fast as possible. Us members who wait for the show to post every day at 7-8 don’t care if there is a description. Just put who’s hosting and then work on the description after.
The delays are clearly to divert members’ attention whilst the TYT elite spend all the donated monies on cocaine and hookers.
Why the f*ck are those people laughing?? What on Earth was funny about any of that?!
I wonder the same thing. I may be a 62-year-old overweight white guy, but if I had seen that live in front of me, I would’ve been in those policeman’s face. Some things are worth getting arrested for, and I would’ve been yelling at that cop like a baseball manager at a umpire my face inches from his. That God-damn son of bitch.
stop whining you entitled scrubs. your monthly donation isn’t to allow you to get an on time show, or to cry because your video quality is a headache to show as HD, or to complain because the preamble has poor grammar
your donation is to support and allow TYT to bring truth to power. to shine the light on the truth in the midst of corruption and propaganda. you should be grateful that these champions are dedicating their lives to push the tide of humanity towards decent ideals, in the face of exploitative corporations and right wing insanity
when you get the urge to bleat about consistency and value for your contribution, take a breath and either go outside and do something nice for someone, or click one of the links below to help a stranger from the comfort of your home

I wish to join the objection of the other members regarding the delay in posting. If it is the result of writing the long description, please omit the long description. All you need, for example, for today’s show is the following:
Ana and John hosting.
Another San Bernardino school shooting, Great Barrier Reef bleaching, Trump’s China summit, questions in the aftermath of the Syria strike, and police brutality in Colorado.
What are people saying OUTSIDE of the US about the Syrian Gas attacks?
Why were doctors tweeting & offering video WHILE they were treating victims on their way in to the hospital?
Makes me think of the babies who were “dumped” out of their incubators by Iraqi soldiers in Kuwait (Nayirah testimony) before Gulf War 1. A three-kleenex, heart-string pulling load of horse shit.
Now it is all about Syria, and we aren’t hearing ANYTHING about what Congress is doing on domestic issues.
Gutting EPA, trying to crush the Dept of Ed, etc, etc.
A LOT of people are gonna make bank if a “police action” begins in Syria.
Gas attacks seem very convenient right now.
No one gave a shit about Dead Babies these past 15 years of bombing & war.
** Ironic that TYT is having numerous snafus on members ability to view the show while they are asking people to vote for them on the Webbys.
All of the videos and reporting on the attack was done by journalists from 3 local networks working in the town (and some of them as well as the first responders were sick and I know of at least two fatalities). Reporting and videotaping is crucial because it is proof.
I don’t know of any doctor on site tweeting (I know Arabic pretty well and follow the feeds regularly, the tweets in English are by people who mostly not in Syria but commenting from Turkish or Jordanian refugees camps or activists in Europe or the US) at the time of the attack but the ones who did did it well after the situation was stabilized and the sickest (as well as several bodies) were transported to Turkey along with soil and ammunition samples, all of which is documented as was the Russian planes attacking the site of the attack 3 hours later to destroy evidence.
As for the 1st gulf war, that was propaganda exposed within a few days by the American schoolmates of the daughter of the Kuwaiti Ambassador to the US. After the war my uncles (3 were vets of that war) saw worse things than what that girl described in her testimony and all has been well documented (in many cases by videotapes by the Iraqi intelligence services).
Sometimes you need to lie in order to do the right thing.
Sometimes you need to lie to do the right thing.
Interesting.
And who decides WHEN to do this noble lie?
And who determines WHAT is the “right thing?”
I imagine the lives of millions of women, children, grandparents and families that US bombs have destroyed for Oil Companies, Defense contractors and Neocon pieces-of-shit was WELL worth the lies.
First you have to determine what is the “right thing” and then you determine by which way you commence because most people know what is the “right thing” to do, they differ on morality of action and the legality of it.
Determining what is “right” and what is “wrong” throws you into the dark realm of moral relativism because there is no pure good or pure evil. Knowing whether an event happening right now is “right” or “wrong” is the easy thing, determining the necessity and type of action that is where moral relativism comes into play and where in a lot of cases the distinction is clear as day but people willfully blind themselves and find excuses.
Everyone knew that what was happening to the Armenians or the Jews was “wrong” but both sides determined that the “right” action is to do nothing in the case of the Jews (indeed the US returned Jewish refugees back to Germany) and relief efforts in the case of the Armenians (let us not forget Germany declared war on the US and the US had no intention to fight Germany after Pearl Harbor). People used legal excuses to justify doing nothing and the public used false morality to justify ignoring the entire thing altogether because it was “none of our business”.
When to lie depends on the readiness of people to do the right thing or not. In both WWI and WWII there were no qualms about who was on the “right” side or the “wrong” side. The problem was convincing a congress and an American public about the importance of joining the “right” side. The American people refused to do so and so Wilson and FDR lied through their teeth about the US policy towards the war until Japan and Germany in WWII justifiably declared war on the US and the US declared war on Germany in WWI despite it being an active participant in that war since 1915.
In other situations in US and world history (Korea, Bosnia etc.) the American people were willing to do the right thing and congress or the presidency did not find a necessity to “lie” to the people to justify intervention and that intervention saved millions of lives and stopped wars.
If there is anything we have learnt from the Manning and Snowden leaks it is that just because a thing is illegal it does not mean that doing that illegal thing is immoral. It is the height of morality to do what both these people did yet it was illegal.
First of all, you can justify your lies for going to war anyway you like, it’s still wrong.
Paint it as red, white & blue as you want.
This is about OIL, corporations & GREED.
Sounds like you are a WARMONGER to me.
You agree that it is a good idea to attack yet ANOTHER country.
More war, great … How much BANK is your family making on weapons?
The only time you ever respond to one of my posts is to do a document dump, and you think you are proving some point about what? That lying to go to war is GOOD???
Don’t equate what Snowden or Assange did with Fucking Trump and $hillary and that pack of Chicken Hawks who want us in ANOTHER WAR!!!
No it is not. Every single war began with a lie to convince people in charge to finance it and the people to support it including the “Good Wars” (and there are no good wars). People simply lie to themselves to make themselves feel better about those wars.
If we were to be strict constitutionalists slavery would still be legal, the South would have left and there wouldn’t have been a single Jew left in Europe. Thankfully we had leaders who realized that sometimes you need nudge people off the cliff to do the right thing.
Just because a thing is not constitutional does not mean it is wrong. Virtually every single progressive thing that happened in this country was a rebellion on the very same constitution you aim to defend. Think about it.
And finally, go easy on the caps.
Don’t equate what Snowden or Assange did with Fucking Trump and $hillary and that pack of Chicken Hawks who want us in ANOTHER WAR!!!
I’ll go easy on the caps when you stop rationalizing & justifying for-profit wars that do not help better the lives of real people. These Oil Wars (past & present) have nothing to do with saving babies, or humanitarian efforts, or freedom, or protecting the United States.
Sorry to see so many people upset about the posting times. Clearly not intentional. No doubt TYT is doing the best they can with what they have. Good luck with the process. I hope for the best.
I have refrained from commenting re: all this narrative. Shorten it up, use bullets & short phrases.
And the problems with uploads is very annoying. I live in Hawaii so NEVER watch live. It drives me crazy to not have TYT available for my evening routine. Come on. Pull up the panties – do it.
Sniderffamily5, Richtrap, Brittcarr, Rushwebster I’m with you on this too.
Slow show postings are far too common on TYT.
Often shows are posted so late that a topic of interest will lose its relevance due to changes in a situation.
Kind of dissappointing. that good interesting content is allowed to do stale.
As long as I’m on the subject of way too slow postings:
Where is the debate between Cenk and the anti-constitutional convention guy…FROM LAST FRIDAY!!
before the youtube crackdown i could partially understand as that was more of a revenue generator but that is a targeted attack on progressive media and it seems that they are either sucking up or trying to prove how much $$$ they can generate for advertisers and youtube or cost them, its a power play that im not sure is going to work.
What is happening with the uploads happening later and later? What’s gone wrong here? Toss a little coin at hiring/improving your presence online because this is getting tiresome, TYT. Really. Do you actually READ these comments at all? We are your members and want to believe we matter and have an opinion that counts for something.

Well, they appear to read tweets mid-show, so maybe a bunch of people should send tweets about their unprofessional slow postings during that time lol. Even if TYT doesn’t read it aloud on the air, the chance of them seeing it may increase.
John reads tweets. A 22-year-old college stupid gets slammed to the ground by a cop
College stupids are what is wrong with this world so I guess I don’t blame him ;) lol
Like everyone else I really don’t understand the description.. Have you seen the ones that have an error or two in every sentence?? This one is precious, though. Thanks for pointing it out :D
Congrats on calling alex jones out. What a Fraud.
So if a horrific school shooting happens under trump is that a liberal conspiracy to get your guns?
Alex and his supporters are some of the dumbest people on the planet. I can offer anecdotal evidence, I’ve lurked the chans for like a decade and saw the rise of the alt right.
Why no coverage of David Fahrenthold?
I gotta jump in on the bandwagon of all the problems the TYT main site has had in the last week or two. Every time I go to watch a video there’s some error and I have to download it (which is a problem with a solution so not the biggest deal). On top of that the videos have been coming out later and later every day; I checked and they made it onto YouTube for non-paying fans before it was out here…. I appreciate how hard it is doing this stuff is everyday but I am paying for a service I basically could get for free on Youtube. Idk just saying it’ll be great when the videos are back to normal
John reads tweets
Dear tyt , as a paying customer I try to give you the benefit of a doubt when you have uploaded 1st and 2nd hour late and not upload the 1 he at all one time . This is now almost an everyday thing uploading later and later every day . I should cancel my paying membership and watch it for free like I used to on YouTube for free . Please don’t Hire anymore reporters and hire some more production staff and IT.
Tolstoy (nee Wysocki) is known for his eye-bleedingly long descriptions, but most often he is only quoted from his most significant works, Anna Karenina and War and Peace. Whereas I always like to quote his most salacious works, Anna Notherparagraph and War on Brevity.
”John reads tweets. A 22-year-old college stupid gets slammed to the ground by a cop. John and Ana discuss how the woman was obviously not posing enough of a threat to warrant the treatment she received. ” haha, I guess you could call them that, but..
Horrible delay in posting videos for members. AGAIN. How can you expect to win a webby when the web experience for members is sub par. This seems to happen over and over again.
Agreed. Posting the vid should be priority #1.
Better late than never, but never late is better

Typo in the last paragraph of description. stupid -> student?
Kinda ridiculous that this content is uploaded to youtube first since they arent paying you guys anymore. You think you would take care of your paying members first . Its very frustrating.
First of the worst.
