  1. The Hollywood sign trail access story is BS — really a non-story. There are hundreds of different ways to gain access to every part of griffith park trails include the trails above and around Sunset Ranch. The gate in question does not block access to trails. Hikers can still access those trails from a half-dozen other nearby access points. I hiked those trails daily for decades. All the access points are still there.

The gate blocks access to private property belonging to a stable that has been in business since 1940’s. That business has every right to close the damn gate.

The only thing “lost” here is the kind of simple instructions that outsider tourists could follow — go to Sunset Ranch and park. Now they cannot park at the ranch. But no one has blocked access to the trails.

And I’m with Cenk, you gotta touch the sign. (At least once.) Glad I never had to deal with Trail Nazi Ana telling me not to go there.

  2. Thats a new one, Cenk. Played rugby for years and NEVER saw that one. Thankfully. However, the elephant walk around the statue of President McKinley did land me in the drunk tank for a night.

Anna, Super-Manly-Men is a line on the door of the Department of Redundancy Department.

  3. I’ll eat my girlfriend’s ass after she plays tennis any day! Don’t knock it until you try it

  4. On these subjects I generally agree with Ana. The system, our economy and social system focuses on success by land ownership and being able to have things you want, while still being able to pay for them (not so much the latter as we are now judged on our debt and how that is handled). Cenk’s attitude seems to be more of a personal one, probably influenced by his culture of origin. He still owns because it makes economic sense, as many young people get married in small part for the tax savings, at least it is a good excuse. I agree with all of that. Personally I find materialism to be pointless. I made good money when I was healthy and had a lot of stuff. None of it made me feel better or secure. In spite of Bankruptcy protections, companies still skirted the rules and punished me for having the audacity to get sick and run out of money. Home ownership? It’s great until it isn’t. It is a thing, mostly an economic plus until you have to replace a roof or have two new leach fields installed. I liked renting because it was a known expense and because I got to know the landlord and generally we worked around conflicts. Plus it meant I could move and not go through the tremendous hassle of selling the property or worse leasing it out with a management company etc..Additionally, I’m seriously bad with money. My brain does the most absurd things to numbers and money. So keeping it simple wins. And I like the freedom to move to a new location, a new state and have a small place. That is a personal reason for preferring renting. Now of course it is moot as I have to live with family and I am extremely fortunate that they have a ranch outside of Denver and I can have a small place of my own attached to the garage. My blessings are great and I am very thankful, but I could be just as happy in section 8 housing in New Mexico. It is all in one’s perspective. Money, material things, just don’t mean that much to me but I am thankful for what I have, very thankful.

  5. The court ruling that closed a less difficult trail to the Hollywood sign may have created an access issue. For people with mobility limitations, the closed trail may have been their only means of access to the landmark.

For example, people who need a cane or stick to walk may not be able hike the remaining trails. The hikers need to find someone like that to sue the whiny homeowners and reopen the trail.

  6. Ana, IGNORE Cenk on the house thing. My ex and I had to borrow the down payment for a home from both of our parents. We had college debt and were paid nothing as teachers in Texas ($6,000 a year was my first year’s salary!). It was difficult at the time but but the best thing in the long run. You get NOTHING for your rent — and lots of times you don’t even get crap fixed by the landlords. A home is an investment. And paying a little bit extra toward the mortgage’s principal monthly saved tons on interest and the mortgage was paid off years early. I retired at age 50 on a shitty teachers’ salary ( after earning my highest salary of $42,500 after 30 years). Annual property taxes are just under $3,000. Can you rent a 4 bedroom home for $250 a month plus utilities/cable? I think not. And this is just outside of Austin. I know it’s not as expensive as LA sure but home ownership has a lot to do w/timing and luck. Don’t give up and don’t listen to Cenk on anything except politics!

P.S. but it might help if you made friends w/lots of OLD homeowners — so when they go to a nursing home, you can swoop in and make them an offer!

  7. I just find it strange how Ana used to care deeply about getting a house, then she saw a movie that made her believe she didn’t need a house and she said we shouldn’t be so concerned about what we own & now she needs a house. The flip flopping is real!

  8. Message to Cenk: I do love you, but when you and Ana have a strong difference of opinion, 99% of the time I agree with Ana over you. And it’s only 99% of the time because it’s statistically impossible to agree with anyone 100%.

    1. you know i’m with you on that Sue0606–maybe 90% though.
i think also that of course, Cenk should debate Ana if he disagrees, but he should also be a tad more openminded and hear what Ana is saying. there’s a teensy bit of shut down going on!
      love both Cenk and Ana!
