The Young Turks February 3, 2016 Hour 1

In Membership, The Young Turks Hour 1 - On Demand by klingbeil2130 Comments

Cenk and Iadarola hosting today. Rand Paul has suspended his presidential campaign. Cenk remembers when he predicted who would eventually be the GOP candidate when TYT did The Freak Sixteen. Video of Cenk’s horrible prediction calling it for Rand Paul. Cenk spins his miscue to give himself some credit for the reasoning behind his pick of Rand Paul. Jeb Bush spoke to a group of supporters in NH and when he hit an “inspirational” point of this speech, there was no response, prompting Bush to ask the crowd to clap.

Donald Trump has changed his muted tone on the Iowa results and went on a Tweetstorm going after Cruz for his dishonest tactics against Ben Carson. He’s calling for either a recount or a disqualification. Donald Trump admitted to Morning Joe that he is a rookie to the election game, and that he didn’t even know what a ground game is. Bernie Sanders’ attention being focused on Goldman Sachs and Wall St has Lloyd Blankfein listening. Video of Blankfein painting the move to call them out dangerous by Sanders. Videos of Lloyd and the CNBC panel calling Sanders a Socialist and listing reasons why this is a disaster for America and the young people that support him. A recent poll asked people their thoughts on a political revolution that would redistribute money from the wealthy to the rest of the country that has received limited opportunities. Most people overwhelmingly supported the idea, even along Republican lines.

  1. Yes John! Exactly! Religious oppression is Anti-Libertarian . What else is anti-Libertarian: corporate welfare, government support of monopolies combined with weak/nonexistent antitrust laws, innovation crippling pro-corporate copyright laws, the “Drug War”, intentionally obtuse tax codes that give the powerful loopholes and punish the middle and lower classes, government giving human rights to corporations and denying human rights to actual people, the crushing of worker organization and freedom of association, financial policies that stifle entrepreneurship, basically everything the current Right loves. “Socialist” Bernie has more truly Libertarian policies than Paul and Cruz combined.

    1. The other things that are “anti-libertarian” are common sense, intelligence and even the most basic understanding of economics.

  2. Actually Cenk we don’t need banks and you and more of your audience would know that if you would cover bitcoin…

    1. I have to disagree. Where is hour 2? I just spent five minutes poking around the site and I can’t find it. That’s pretty much a massive design fail right there.

      1. not that hard to find. hover over member content. click on annual archives. click on 2016 archives and choose whichever hour on whatever date you want. i’m a fucking idiot when it comes to tech stuff and i figured it out fairly easily

        1. Buried in a menu you can’t see, three clicks deep? That’s kind of the definition of ‘hard to find’. Fortunately they fixed it, and the links are back up on the surface. One of the most basic rules of thumb of UI design is “don’t make me think”, which in this case translates to “put the most commonly used things out front where everyone can find them”.

      2. also, if you look at the sidebar. there appears to be links to hour 1,hour 2 and the post game. i’m stoned and managed to work that out

  3. AGREE with Cenk on Pravda versus establishment media. Not only Pravda was outright honest of its attitude — against corporate imperialism owned by oligarchies of multinational corporations — but they also never came even remotely to level of Orwellian lies that Western media regularly execute (including on Saddam’s ties to 9/11 and WMDs, on Syria, on Russia, so on).

    1. Also, Benjamin was TOTALLY WRONG by white-washing Hillary Clinton in discussion of latest Townhall debates, claiming that the fact that Clintons are rich makes her getting millions of USDs from banks and Wallmart not a factor.

First of all, Clinton family, as it turns out, had giant, multi-million USDs liabilities, so they need money, and they get it via speeches.

Second of all, Elizabeth Warrren told in 2004 story on how she back in 1999 explained to Hillary predatory nature of banks-lobbying law about insurance, and that Hillary perfectly understood that and helped to not allow that law to pass while William Clinton was in office. BUT THEN Hillary became Senator herself, and she voted for exact same law — just because she was financed by banks during elections.

  4. The new design is nice. However, I like many others do not like the banners at the top of the page. More than that, I miss the links to the next hour.

    1. In the meanwhile, if you maintain a user stylesheet, you can add “.x-comment-content p { color: black; }”

  5. The polling discussion starting at 49 min is the strongest statement I have seen anywhere about the growing frustrations of the public. It also explains the rise of a demagogue/bully like Trump.

My worry is that, if we don’t make major moves to relieve worker economic plight by electing Bernie, we may end up with a choice between a demagogue of the left or right in another 4 or 8 years. How would you feel about a Cruz/Grayson choice in 2020 or 2224?

  6. The new look is nice, but the new layout is not good. The massive banner headline shoves interesting content too far down the page, to a degree that I would use this as a teaching example of what not to do when I teach people about good layout. As a rule, Navigation and Login and all that should be at the top of the page (read up on Fitz’ law). That’s basic UI design 101 there. Be mindful of the ratio of whitespace+graphics to actual content. Too much whitespace and graphics has your user scrolling all over the page to find what they’re looking for.

That said, I like the color and saturation choices, but you should always go for high contrast text. That’s the most demanding thing the human eye is going to encounter on your screen, and while gray tones may look nice, they make it harder to read.

    1. Wholeheartedly agree. In fact, the first things I did when I saw the banner was:
      1. Oh, that’s nice, awards and stuff.
      2. Hmm, where’s the “X” to remove it?
      3. Remove it with my content blocker.

  7. Yes, American voters strongly support Bernie Sanders’ positions. But support for those positions is NOT the same thing as support for Bernie Sanders. Imagine that the pollsters added before each question “Bernie Sanders believes that…” and at the end of each added “Based on Bernie’s support of this position, how likely would you be to vote for him?” Those results would be worlds away from the ones you showed tonight (Wednesday).

  8. “First they ignore you….then they massively misinterpret your positions.” – john iadarola

How can people not appreciate John? He’s great.

    1. John is fine as a human being. As a co-host on TYT, he frequently fails to ever disagree with Cenk. Even on a more subtle level or clarification. He doesn’t add much to what Cenk says and is more in the Cenk Cheer-leading camp. Since he talks about his past life being in Grad school at UT, I’m always waiting for more intelligent commentary, yet rarely find substantive, fresh, points. I enjoy Ben, Michael, and Wes because they counter Cenk more often. It would be nice to see more intelligent debate on issues. I wish they would have more women scientists on their panels as well. I skip or dont even watch when TYT covers Fox news. It is garbage, just like Fox news. The outrage drama I cannot take. Please Analyze policy and world affairs. It is like South America doesnt exist. It is like Europe Doesn’t exist. It is like Russia doesn’t exist, except some silly Putin story. I don’t care about your so called cat fights. Your expansion has greatly tainted your product. Also what the phuck is that banner on the top of the new page. The rest of the new design is fine.
