I couldn’t help thinking how funny it was that a character on TV was the focus of so much emotion.
If you think about it, the reason the character was so reprehensible to so many people was because we couldn’t imagine ourselves hating other humans so virulently; but each day I look around at our governments and they show as much hated or more towards their own people, never mind what they do to foreigners and indigenous populations.
Maybe like the show, people are scared and that is why they bow their heads and allow those in power to crush their neighbors.
My disappointment about TYT in regards to GoT has nothing to do with spoilers or celebrating someone’s death. It’s the half-hearted treatment they’re giving the reviews and the live viewing.
1) WHY are the live viewings not being posted here? What’s the point of even doing them if you’re not gonna post them? Most people aren’t gonna watch it love because THEY’RE WATCHING THE SHOW! Post it here so we can watch it after! Simple. Don’t know why you’re not doing it.
2) Why has everybody’s schedule seemed to go all over the place right when GoT comes back? Two episodes (one of them a MAJOR episode) have been crippled now because of people not being there for the reviews. The lifeblood of these reviews is the discussions, and the main sources of great discussion were Cenk, Ben and John. Both reviews we’ve only gotten 1 out of 3. Are Ben and John away? What are they doing on a Sunday that they can’t be there? How about Skyping them in if they’re away? Bottom line: Put more effort into making sure those three, at least, are always there.
3) I think the immediate review right after the episode is a bad idea. You guys are still digesting the episode, so the insights aren’t as good. You need some time to process things and think a little before you can properly review something. Doing the reviews the next day allowed you guys to gather your thoughts and talk more sensibly about things. Right after the episode, you’re still buzzing about it. You don’t have proper perspective yet. I feared this would be the case when I first heard you guys would do the reviews right away. Sadly, my fears have come true. They’re not very good reviews so far. Last year was MUCH better! Please switch back to the old approach!
Also, the lighting sucks. Especially the first one. I felt like I was watching a David Lynch movie. Do it on the normal What The Flick?! set.

The most important thing about the North Korea brainwashing story is that virtually the same thing is happening HERE! Whenever Cenk or Ana says North Korea, substitute conservative/republican/religious zealot/gun fetishist/fox news, you pick.
The bigger the lie, the more they believe it. Fact and evidence matter not to the right wing, they believe what they are told to believe. This is a terrible danger.
What’s the source for that North Korean defector story? Don’t know if Ana butchered it or what, but I can’t understand now they crossed the border into China, found out it’s “not safe” there, then went straight for Mongolia (about a thousand miles west), and from there finally got to South Korea (about a thousand miles back east).
That’s like fleeing from North Carolina to South Carolina by way of Texas. Because it wasn’t safe in Alabama.
My verdict on Cenk & Ana vs. Joffrey:
– Not guilty on feeling good about his death and rooting against him.
– Guilty for wishing for a more torturous death. That’s crossing the line, especially after you talk about “enhanced interrogation”, punitive measures in prison, etc.
It doesn’t matter what a nasty peace of work a man was, you’re allowed to feel great if he dies, but wishing for more pain and torture… that’s just ugly.
I feel like this whole discussion is moot, because GoT is FICTION. Who gives a fuck that people celebrate Joffrey’s death? It’s not REAL -Cenk should just dismiss it and move on. Instead, he’s making this broader argument, and the most annoying part is that I seem to remember Cenk being really pissed off with the RAH RAH ‘MERICA celebrations that happened after Bid Laden died. It’s like he’s forgotten all about that (which I still think was the right position) in an effort to make this ridiculous defense about a work of fiction.
You’re right, of course, but even through their response to works of fiction people can express certain aspects of their real personalities. For example, saying that you wish for someone’s death to be prolonged and made more painful… that makes you sound like a sadistic. vindictive little bitch. Ana normally lives her life as a decent, nonviolent person, but fiction gives an outlet for her uglier, less often expressed side.
And sure, most of us have sides like that deep down. But that doesn’t mean we should really show them in public, it just embarrasses us in front of other people who don’t necessarily feel that way.
Nice post and I agree. We should never condone violence, even from our peace officers and soldiers. The people authorizing and conducting torture on another human being more than 170 times should not be tortured but they should be brought to justice. Supporting violence simply condones and encourages violence and torture, nothing more. It’s playing into the hands of the people who profit from violence.
I knew I had to watch Game of Thrones each week because spoilers were rampant after the Red Wedding.
With that being said, I HATE when libs say you shouldn’t celebrate anyone’s death. People told me that after Osama Bin Laden died. I’ll celebrate anyone’s death if they caused pain and suffering to anyone.

I tuned into the live stream yesterday in the middle of Cenk exclaiming “down with Joffrey!”. I had watched half the GOT episode that morning, and had planned to watch the rest that evening. I’m still seething. I’ve been waiting to see Joffrey meet his fate for YEARS. And I didn’t even get to enjoy it.

I’m sorry, but you guys are whining too much. You tuned into the stream specifically announced as live coverage of the GOT episode, and now you’re seething because… they covered the GOT episode?
Maybe you should also complain to HBO because their show spoiled the books for you? Makes about as much sense.
