  1. Great hour, John! Love the beard and the slightly longer hair :)

    –trigger warning: animal agriculture/slaughter details–
About the turkey: The guy wasn’t choking the turkey. You can see a little pit just off the camera to the right. It’s hard to tell, but he was probably tying its feet there, and then possibly slaughtering the turkey there. At the very least, he held it upside down to move a lot of the blood to the head, which also makes the animal lose consciousness over a short period. If done properly, it’s unconscious pretty quickly (not a lot of conscious suffering in correctly performed slaughters, actually, although they need to keep improving slaughter technique to make it more humane). Then he put it in the metal thing, which is called a kill cone (subtle, I know). If he hadn’t done the slaughter in the pit, he did it in the kill cone. The kill cone is used to drain the blood out of the turkey and also to immobilize it. The immobilization is not because the animal is trying to get away–at this point, it’s unconscious–but because the animal’s body will twitch and thrash during the death process. It’s sometimes violent, and, with big animals like the turkey, it can be dangerous for the human worker.

With chickens, who are usually more docile and handle-able compared to turkeys (who are often very aggressive and can weigh up to 25+ pounds at typical slaughter size for a large turkey), they are usually put in the killing cone first, then slaughtered and drained while in the cone.

Just some info from an agriculture enthusiast :)

  2. There is a good reason for Snowden to release the information in parts. First of all, it keeps NSA spying in the news. Second, it helps contradict information spread out during the damage control media blitz. When Obama says, “OK, we do X, but we don’t do Y or Z,” and Snowden comes out and says “Well, actually, they do Y and Z as well,” it is more effective at showing how the establishment can’t be trusted.

      1. 1. You haven’t seen my thin, patchy beard
        2. It has long been my opinion that only about 10% of men can pull off a decent beard. Most men look like they’re trying to be something that they’re not.
