Senate debates Syrian intervention. John McCain adjust his stance several times. Disagreement between Jimmy and the panel on whether or not we should go in due to the use of chemical weapons. Video of John Kerry and Rand Paul in a bitter dispute over the desire to go to war. Discussion over our idea of ‘going to war. Bill O’Reilly spoke about how we need to go into Syria because the USA is noble and is the only country that can right the wrongs in the world. Jimmy Dore responds. The question of whether or not Rep Boehner will step down from his speakership. Cenk predicts that his stepping down will cause him to make
deals with Obama in order to prop up his “legacy.”

You cannot explain it, why we do it?
It is the money stupid
read: the military industrial complex has propagandized the oppinion of hawks, republicans, democrats and the population
Steve-o has it correct
sorry “It is the economy stupid” :)
Ben needs to have the mic closer to his face. When he does his mutter (which I’m not saying I don’t like; I do the same thing), it’s just really hard to hear him. But then of course he’ll do the thing where he suddenly SHOUTS REALLY ANIMATED to parody something, so that throws it all off.
way too much john these days, god dangit tyt
I love this live show and I am for droning Syria even more now that I watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXo_bTocynQ This live show was fucking hilarious I love the panda bear. Can you have him on more once his book is done.
Jimmy Dore: “Tony Soprano can’t hand out parking tickets. It doesn’t work.”
Ben Mankiewicz: “If Tony Soprano was elected Sheriff, he’d be the one to hand out parking tickets.”
WE WEREN’T ELECTED SHERIFF OF THE WORLD. WHEN WILL WE UNDERSTAND THIS.
Good job, Steve Oh. The credibility factor is a hoax. Why weren’t you on this panel?? Jimmy against three pro-war guys on this panel…. geez.
JIMMY DOHR HOLD UNTIL RELIEVED
agreed!!!!!
The thing that worries me is that I have yet to see evidence, any evidence, that these chemical weapons aren’t part of a false-flag operation to prompt us into a war with Syria. If we as a country are saying that we will go to war with any country that uses saron gas, then all the CIA or some other organization needs to do is detonate some saron gas in a country and off our war machine goes, like a dog after a chew toy. I’m ashamed of the lack of skepticism represented on this panel. How can you feel confident that it was really the Syrian government that used the chemical weapons? I haven’t seen any actual evidence to suggest that it was definitely the Syrian government that did the attack. It could have been the rebels, it could have been a lone-wolf, it could have been the CIA. Tell me how you know it wasn’t something other than the Syrian government and I’d get behind the idea of attacking.
Syria does have OIL!!!
According to the Oil and Gas Journal, Syria had 2,500,000,000 barrels (400,000,000 m3) of petroleum reserves as of 1 January 2010. Syria’s known oil reserves are mainly in the eastern part of the country in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate near its border with Iraq and along the Euphrates River; a number of smaller fields are located in the center of the country. From Wikipedia.
I see this as a cash cow and give away to the Military Industrial Complex.
More than oil, it’s geographically located *exactly* where an oil pipeline would need to be laid to get Iraqi oil to the Mediterranean Sea. How people don’t compute this I don’t get it. We’re totally going there for oil and military contractor money.
Jimmy’s point about “It’s not war, we’re just fucking around” is devastating.
If other countries did to the US what we do to them on a consistent trend, We’d look at them like cartoon bad guys. COBRA or something.
This show was great — but Jimmy Dore is the wisest person on the panel.
Please. please. please get rid of John. He is not good TV.
i disagree
He just strikes me as the least interesting person on every panel. Also, very white, very jock, very frat.
I was skeptical of him at first, but he’s won me over, despite being 5+ yrs younger than me. Wait, did you call him ‘very jock’ and ‘very frat’???? Are you confusing Idarola with bro-tips?
So Cenk does not think sending Assad flowers will work, so therefore no one will try diplomatic ways. War begets war, gentlemen.
The only one, as we say in Denmark “that has a hold of the long end” is Jimmy Dore. The world doesn’t really care about the how the US thinks of itself and its red lines, but nobody wants a self-appointed world policeman that drop bombs whenever they feel like it and disregard the opinions and studies of the UN and global organizations like the, Amnesty, Red Cross etc.
I think it would be wise to read up on the Geneva Protocol and the Chemical Weapons Convention before talking about Syria.
I’m with Jimmy and Steve Oh.
just in general?
This is wonderful. The White House is picking and choosing what to report from other sources. In their assessment they say:
“Three hospitals in the Damascus area received approximately 3,600 patients displaying symptoms consistent with nerve agent exposure in less than three hours on the morning of August 21, according to a highly credible international humanitarian organization. The reported symptoms, and the epidemiological pattern of events – characterized by the massive influx of patients in a short period of time, the origin of the patients, and the contamination of medical and first aid workers – were consistent with mass exposure to a nerve agent. We also received reports from international and Syrian medical personnel on the ground.”
but the White House quote from the report:
http://www.msf.org/article/syria-thousands-suffering-neurotoxic-symptoms-treated-hospitals-supported-msf
leaves out one sentence:
“MSF can neither scientifically confirm the cause of these symptoms nor establish who is responsible for the attack,”
Keep it classy, Obama!
In addition, here is a great breakdown of the White House assessment written by Dave Lindhoff:
http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/09/03/obamas-and-kerrys-big-lie/
I really think Cenk and the Power Panel need to read and discuss the US assessment of the August 21 Syrian gas attack published on the White House website:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2013/08/30/government-assessment-syrian-government-s-use-chemical-weapons-august-21
The telling hint is contained near the end of the fourth paragraph:
“Our high confidence assessment is the strongest position that the U.S. Intelligence Community can take short of confirmation.”
That tells it all, the president and Congress are willing to go to war without confirmation. Again, like in Iraq, it indicates to me a rush to judgment.
Go Jimmy and Steve. What happened to the progressive perspective lately??? Wow.
no kidding. now its ‘all war, all the time’.
gungho much?
I agree with Steve oh.
PS how can you say that firing missiles into a sovereign nation is not an invation. Like daily show said, just the tip, dont make me…ehh cry and scream :-)
TYT is about “keeping it real” and Jimmy Dore and Steve Oh kept it real! I can’t say more because everyone else on this board already made a lot of good points!
I’ve been listening to the excuse “the US must do whatever or they will lose credibility” all my life and I’m 59. That is such a bullshit excuse.
That excuse is right up there with “if we leave then we dishonor the troops”. These are all standard excuses used by the US and others to start a war or continue one.
War is not the only solution. Unfortunately for the US it has become not the last but the first option.
Cenk should stop saying Syria has no oil. Before the civil war America was a regular importer of oil from Syria. There is oil there.
Why is it, that everybody thinks that the punishment for the use of chemical weapons has to be more killing? The problem is, that every strike will be worse than the chemical weapon use in number of casualties. So the US does not even know if the assad regime used the chemical weapons, so why the rush? That you never get proof who really used them? What about freezing Assads bank accounts, No-Fly-Zones, Why there has to be blood to be shed, it will always be the blood of innocent people.
And the point is really valid, that before US should punish someone because of use of chemical weapons, what is the punishment for using radioactive ammo in Irak by US forces, usage of white phosphor by Israel, punishment for inhuman torture in gitmo?
Why the US always has the smallest dick and is jumping on everyone immediately, if noone else will? If noone has the same set of mind as you have, maybe you are wrong?
I actually can’t believe this is the same TYT I watched 2 weeks ago. Apparently the point at which you’re convinced that the government is doing what they’re saying they’re doing is when they say so. You were against the Syrian War, the government came out and gave vague, ‘overly patriotic move scene’ explanations for why they should go, and that’s enough for you guys. Totally convinced. I might be being unfair because you can justify it by saying “well, I half-had this position before they said anything” but I simply say the government is just very, very good at exploiting you.
Bravo Jimmy Dore.
One more thing- I want to stress that in Syria, NOTHING HAS CHANGED since 1-2 weeks ago, when Cenk was wavering on whether or not to go to war. The same exact conditions still apply. Cenk did not harp on the “setting an example”-trope until the government made that point, and now 3/4 of them repeat it as gospel and use it as their primary reasoning for supporting the war.
Sorry, one more thing, because Dore’s point was so awesome- if Brazil or Mexico fired some missiles at our NSA facilities for intercepting their diplomatic communications, would we call that “punitive action” or would we say they’re declaring war on us.
Exactly what Jimmy said: who bombs us we cruise missiles when we break “international norms”?
with*
Jimmy Dore is LAUGHING at Cenk now! I love it! UZGUNUM AGABEY, but he’s right and he’s laughing at you now, wake up.
Jimmy Dore totally kicked everyone’s ass in the Syria discussion.
It’s particularly hard to bullshit a great comedian.
BTW, What I think changed is that we could not persuade kuwait or israel to help us get the iraqi oil to market, they don’t want oil pipelines through their countries, they won’t help us, so now we have to build a pipeline through syria. I would guess that is all or most of the reason why we WILL attack syria and maybe invade syria if we need to in order to install a puppet regime.
BING BING BING! Jimmy Dore has opened the class room, “you guys keep pretending this is about chemical weapons!” Exactly, TYT is falling for the government line which is a bit disappointing, they are going to be disabused of this sooner or later, hopefully they won’t have mountains of tape of them advocating this war to look back on later and hang their heads in shame. Make no mistake, this is another war based on lies, and they are falling for the lies, and if they don’t wake up soon, they’re going to be really humiliated later.
Jimmy Dore and Steve Oh are spot on concerning Syria. I cannot understand why Cenk can be torn on this issue — unilateral intervention is illegal and lobbing cruise missiles into another sovereign country is an act of war. The UN Charter does not say you cannot INVADE another country without having been attacked (or can prove there is an imminent attack) — it says you cannot ATTACK another country without UN Security Council approval.
The law is very clear and unambiguous.
Despite that, Cenk keeps going on that the US has no interest because there is no oil in Syria. There is an oil pipeline project, however.
http://www.worldconstructionnetwork.com/news/syria_iraq_to_build_two_crude_oil_pipelines_to_mediterranean_sea_100921/
The cheapest and most profitable oil in the world is just now beginning to come online from Eastern Iraq. That oil needs to get to Europe in order to sell the oil. That is the US, i.e. corporate, interest in Syria.
Remember, part of the reason for invading Afghanistan (the Taliban were promised either a shower of gold or a shower of bombs) was the Trans-Afghanistan pipeline from the oil fields in Caucasus (hmmm, I wonder if Kosovo was part of the long-term plan) through Afghanistan to bring the oil to market. BTW, I just checked today, that pipeline will be completed in 2017.
Thank God Cenk’s back!!!
Agree with Jimmy Dore on the war in Syria. War is not a solution for war, use the international criminal courts to indite and hold on trial. No war unless the international community signs off on it, otherwise we are just a rogue nation AGAIN!
John, I <3 you but you should probably stop being ageist. You say something ageist almost every time you're on the show! I know you're smarter than that :\
Yes, thank you. Every time I have to listen to his ageist comments, I’m furious for the rest of the day. John, you’re very smart and that makes it more upsetting every time you make one of these comments. Do you honestly believe someone would like Fox News simply because they’re older? Their viewers are people who never developed an intellect. They’re ignorant assholes and they were like that in their 20s. Your assumptions about older people make you look adolescent.
John McCain is against boots on the ground in Syria.
