Sadly, I was summoned to jury duty once in Houston, TX and the lawyer asked us how many of us listened to Talk Radio like Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. Everyone raised their hand. I was like… face palm.
Minor correction, Cenk: Aslan misrepresented himself on the interview. He is not a professor of religion. He is an associate professor creative writing. He also does not have PhD in religious history.
From Wikipedia:
Aslan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in religions from Santa Clara University, a Master of Theological Studies degree from Harvard Divinity School, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop, where he was named the Truman Capote Fellow in Fiction. Aslan also received a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology of Religion from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
I don’t think a white man gets to decide that using racial slurs is OK. The problem is that some black people are offended by it so as a white person, you just don’t use the word. It’s not about being “politically correct,” it’s about not being an asshole to other human beings. Once 99% of black people don’t give a fuck about the word anymore, then you can use it if you are not black. One thing I can agree on is when quoting someone else, just use the word, don’t say “n-word.” That is just ridiculous.
Personally I tend not to use the word myself but I think the practice of condemning their use no matter the circumstances can have unintended consequences. Consider if Zimmerman had used a racial slur during his conversation with police. I think we all pretty much knew what Zimmerman really meant by “punks” and “assholes” but if he’d felt comfortable to express his racism outright, i bet he’d be in jail right now. There’s something about censoring racism that strikes me as pernicious. I want racists to use racial slurs, so i’ll know that they are racist.
I think this n-word shit has to stop. Allen is absolutely right that this whole n-word, a-word, b-word, c-word, etc is fucking ridiculous. That’s exactly what people hate about political correctness. I hate it when some racist calls someone a nigger and then he gets quoted as saying the n-word. Nigger is just a word and not every sentence containing the word nigger is automatically offensive.
Every time you say n-word, ask yourself why you didn’t just say nigger. Did you need to clarify that you are not a racist?
I’m curious whether it would help or hurt the cause. I haven’t seen the story yet, but the banning of words such as faggot in polite society was followed by a sea change of support for gay rights. Of course, correlation doesn’t equal causation, but when people need to stop short of saying nigger, maybe it registers slightly in their heads that blacks need to be respected. It’s an interesting debate. I say we allow the casual use of ‘nigger’ in polite society for a year and see what happens.
I don’t get the freaking problem with the word nigger/a. Why do americans not get the point to challenge your history? Yes you had slavery, you were very cruel to black people. But he guys you fought it and now it is gone. Learn from germans, they did a really serious bad things to jews and jew was a very bad word, but we still use it.
Just challenge it, and take the bad taste away from that word, depower it, how the german did to nazis and their stuff. If you get an heart attack every time you hear that word, because you don’t want to remind yourself of your terrible past, things will never change.
Black people you have the point, that white people must not use this word, but plack people can, they just encourage racism.
No, racism against blacks is far from gone. There’s a very noticable difference in the economic status of blacks and non-blacks (on average) in the U.S any place you go.
Its pretty simple….you’re allowed to say whatever you want, and people can react however they want. So if you call me the N word, I can call you a racist! Its just a word right?
I don’t wanna start a flame war but I didn’t create the N word just because I’m white. I wish people would get over this whole race thing and understand we are all the same race. homiofuckingsapen!!!!!
As a kid, my fellow devout Huganite sect used to go to school, and people use to pelt us with purple water balloons. As we grew up and bigotry against our kind dwindled, we began to own it, pelting ourselves with purple water balloons during casual gatherings, while simultaneously gasping in horror when a non Huganite threw a purple water balloon. It began to be so tabboo, that people saw it as the only color water balloon they can’t throw, that huge debates were formed over whether or not it was acceptable.
^ – Exactly how stupid this debate sounds to me. Don’t use the word. Highly avoidable. Anyone. It’s stupid.
Tim Allen is flat out wrong. He’s been around long enough to know that it is an offensive word, no matter who uses it. Is it a double standard when blacks get away with using the word? Maybe. But there’s a history behind it that is well documented (and Tim Allen is old enough to understand this). Still, I would argue that the conversation needs to be how we get away from using the word altogether, no matter what race you are.
Reza Aslan, that was by far the most appropriate use of condescension. I might’ve gone ever farther.
This will be my go-to clip for Fox arguments now. She literally, literally could not grasp that someone can present a work without pushing an agenda. After working for Fox, it would not compute in her mind, like a paradox or contradiction. “Fact.. not.. bias.. .. knowledge.. what…”
I’m a secret agent Astronaut and I don’t know what Fox is thinking.
By the way, I haven’t seen the entire TYT yet, so I don’t know if they’ll mention it, but Fox has covered Christians who’ve written about Muslims. But by now, the shocker would be if they WEREN’T hypocrites.

He used the racial slur “coons” on his 911 call.
If he did, unfortunately, he didn’t say it clearly enough to prove it.
How come there’s a bunch of comments about Tim Allen, but no file? Is everyone commenting without even having seen the story?
Is the download link down? I just watched it from the viewer above?

25:00 That would be awesome, and there was already a South Park where the Catholic League dethroned the pope for not being Catholic-y enough.
I love that Gingrich calls himself a historian and people just accept it, yet Aslan has a PhD and Fox disregards it….
