It’s true that no one makes you take out loans in the sense that “No One Makes You Shop at Wal Mart” (great book!). For example, I have friends, and now students, who had scholarships and then suddenly for one reason or another they have less financial aid the next year. They are basically given a choice, either take out a loan to make up for the difference in financial aid, or drop out. What reasonable person halfway (more or less) through a college degree is going to just drop out and lose all of that progress? And there’s a million other nuanced ways students get stuck needing loans, this is just one example.
