Before I go on this rant (and I really hope that someone from TYT like John, Kim, Cenk, or Ana read this), I’d like to state that I understand there are more “important” things to be upset about. I’m a genderqueer male currently debating with myself about going through HRT and eventually SRS. Should I do this that would make me a transwoman and (given my greater interest in women) a lesbian. Therefore, odds are against me in rights when it comes to my State of Ohio. Let’s not even get into what this will do in my family.
That being said, I’m kind of tired of seeing various hosts on TYT bash, mock, or otherwise mock nerd culture. As a nerd (I play games, collect comics, watch science fiction, write science fiction, and so forth), when nerd culture is brought up in non-Nerd Alert TYT shows, nerd culture seems to be the butt of a joke.
When Lisa says, “you’ll have to find your female nerd equivalent,” it comes off as if female nerds are some sort of rarity in the world, when that is most definitely not the case. I feel that, in many ways, some members of TYT just stepped out of a DeLorian that arrived from the 1980’s. Cenk, Ana, and others treat Kim and John’s nerdiness as something “weird” or “different” many times it’s brought up.
You’d think that, with the progressive nature of TYT, this sort of archaic treatment of nerd culture would not exist. This is something that’s bothered me for awhile, but when I start listening to TYTU for the first time in awhile, and the first thing that I hear from Lisa is a jab at nerds, it’s off-putting.
I want to say that, I understand that Lisa, Ana, Cenk, and others don’t mean anything bad by it. Cenk and Ana are inspirations to me, and I know they wouldn’t insult someone for something as minor as their nerdiness to be malicious. I just feel that non-nerds at TYT need to understand that it’s 2013, not 1983. Nerd culture is a huge and popular subculture in the United States. It’s been growing for the past decade.
This also isn’t my attempt to “PC police” TYT or anyone. But I think some folks at TYT do need a bit of an education on nerd culture, as they seem to be under the assumption that it’s still a culture of awkward men, devoid of women, and full of outcasts.
Perhaps I’m “reading into it” too much, but it’s honestly just really annoying to me. I feel like when certain hosts of TYT talk about nerd culture, they’re thinking of Steve Urkel or Revenge of the Nerds or some shit.
I want to reiterate that I’m not hating on any of the hosts. Again, Cenk and Ana are huge inspirations in my life and TYT gives me hope in humanity in many ways. I believe in TYT, which is why I feel the need to point out my frustration with this.

Or you could not take it so personally. It seems to me that you fit more into the geek or dork (probably more toward dork) criteria than nerd.
Yeah, you obviously don’t know what nerd culture is.
