During the Civil Rights Era, people watching the news at home saw images of brave marchers facing snarling dogs, fire hoses and vicious white people. These viewers did not take to the streets to join the marchers, but many of them changed their opinion. This gave JFK and later LBJ the political cover they needed to send in troops and federal agents, nationalize state reserves, and enforce judicial decrees, all to enforce our Constitution and Civil Rights laws in hostile territory. Mobilizing public opinion is more important than many people think.
